Chapter 15 Topic: Conventional Medicine JORDAN LEMBO-FREY PCH 201 WELLNESS SECTION 3
Introduction Jordan Lembo-Frey Exercise Science Human Performance Running track and hanging out with friends Dream I would like to achieve in my life is win the lotto Drawing
Conventional Medicine Conventional Medicine- System in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals (nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and therapist) take care symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery. Conventional medicine is also known as Western medicine.
Providers of Conventional Medicine People who provide conventional medicine are those who are professional license and trained in a specific medical field Types of medical professionals: Dentist Optometrist Physician assistants Nurses
Job Descriptions and Choosing a primary care physician Dentist- They take care of teeth and mouth. Do things such as remove decay from teeth and fill cavities. Optometrist- Responsible for looking at your eyes and seeing if there are any diseases along with treating vision problems. Physicians assistant- Practice medicine on teams with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare worker. They examine, diagnose, and treat patients. Nurses- Provide and plan patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients. When choosing a primary care physician (PCP) you will have someone who gets to know you and refer you to these specialist that you need when you need them
Facts About Primary Care Physicians and health professionals More than 12 million health care professionals of all types work in the United States, Including more than 2.7 million registered nurses. Approximately 209,000 primary care physicians in the United States 490 million people in 2015 went to a primary care physician Growth estimated to be 18% between 2012 and 2020 in the physician and doctorate field. (This is good, because there is an increase in demand in care for people of older generations).
Choosing a Specialist When it comes to finding a specialist, your options a lot more slim because if you need emergency assistance for instance, then you have few to no options. As a result, you will most likely go to your to an emergency department close to where you live.
When do you need to see a specialist? The reason you are sent to a specialist for most cases, is that your PCP thinks that would be better off seeing an expert for the care that you need Not having any health problems and believe that your PCP isn t doing anything to help you, then you should see a specialist If you have a life changing diagnoses like rheumatoid arthritis, you will be recommended to a specialist or given a prescription for strong medicine When seeing a specialist, they will have a referral note from your PCP with your medical record and access to all of your recent testing
Getting the Most Out of Your Medical Care For getting the most out of your medical care, you need to make your health care system work for you. You can do this by good communication through your physician and other members of the health care team Things that go with getting the most out of your medical care: The physician-patient partnership Physician appointments Diagnostic Process Medical and Surgical Treatments
The Physician-Patient Partnership The physician-patient partnership is when a physician acts like a consultant and the patient participates more actively. With this physician-patient partnership, you physician can sit down and listen attentively and explain health care matters with you.(with getting close with you, they are able to help you better) In this partnership, you need to be clear and precise about all of your concerns and questions, so your physician can be a better help to you. If you can not be clear about your concerns and do not ask many questions, then it is best for you to change your relation with your physician
Physician Appointments Though physicians are very busy, sometimes you have the option to see them When you have these appointments, you should come with notes that have your questions and concerns about the symptoms that you ve been having In addition, bring a list of all medications and health records When you sit down with Physician, tell them everything that is going on in great detail so the physician can decide what to do to help you at the end of the meeting
Diagnostic Process Knowing your medical history is a big step to knowing if something is wrong with you in the diagnostic process Your social history is also what is needed. For instance, family life, job, stress, living conditions, and dietary habits When you keep your health records up to date, it helps your physician with important information about your health
Medical and Surgical Treatments Various conditions can be changed in simple ways, like how you live your life Before starting a treatment for whatever your condition is, know the risks and after effects along with benefits that go along with it The medical and surgical treatment you get, depends on what is wrong with you. For instance, if you need cataract surgery, then you will need surgery done to clear out the cataract clouds that are blocking your vision. In other instances, you will just be provided prescription medicine
Facts about prescription drugs 1 in 5 people in 2014 skipped doses or did not fill prescriptions because the cost was too high Over 70% of physician, hospital, and emergency visits end in medication prescription 2.5 million Americans have used prescription drugs for recreational use 50 million people in the U.S. have abused prescription drugs Most abused prescriptions drugs among teens are Oxycodone and Vicodin
