We figure out how to make things work when budgets are flush and when they are not. As an organization AHCEM has been looking for creative, cost-effective ways to help our members stay current on the changing healthcare environment while helping each other figure out new ways to offer the old standbys like infection control! This is Your AHCEM. Let s work together to make it even better! Here are some of the things that we re working on in *Research new payment options for members: either with credit/debit card or online PayPal, etc to provide added convenience for members. *Research using video conferencing for board meetings to enable more members to become board members without added travel expense. *Develop a speaker s list for the website not just the name and contact information for a variety of speakers, but also add a rating for each speaker. *Develop a networking group for computer-based learning users no matter what learning management (LMS) system you have. *Provide timely, interesting and cost-effective programs for the Winter and Fall Conferences and continue with our new networking forum in May. All the dates and locations are on the website so mark your calendar! *Grow AHCEM membership because the more members we have, the more networking and resource possibilities we have. *Look for new ways and continue current ways to provide networking between members at conferences, through our website and . 2 Budget Update Heidi Miller, Treasurer AHCEM Treasurer s Report, Winter Newsletter On November 13 th, the board met and reviewed the projected 2009 budget; discussed spending options for the Change for Change fund and the 2008 Fall Conference. Some changes that were made to the budget consisted of insuring that AHCEM tries to keep a nice balance of income and expenses for the 3 conferences throughout the year. As a not for profit organization, there is an equal balance between our projected income and expenses for The 2009 budget expenses were adjusted slightly based on the expenditures of the previous year. Lots of good input was provided and the 2009 budget was approved on November 18 th. Once again the board worked hard at being optimistic but realistic in our projected budget for Also, during the November board meeting, there was a discussion over how best to use the AHCEM Change for Change fund. Several ideas were past around, some options that were considered, is possibly creating a credit card payment option for our conferences available through the AHCEM website. It was also discussed to possibly use the Change for Change fund to have a new speaker present on updated changes in technology and the health education world. Also, there were 34 attendees at the 2008 fall conference and AHCEM had an income of $6, and expenses of $4,537.23, ending with a profit of $2, For 2009, the board has balanced the budget for three exciting conferences; the winter conference, spring networking conference and the fall conference in September. Finally, the 2008 budget materials are being audited and finalized for the year. For 2009, the budget looks excellent and as always we encourage any input from our members on options for using our Change for Change fund, helping to make AHCEM a progressive organization in the health care field. 3 Nominations By Berdelle Ingeman, Past-President and Nominations Chair AHCEM Membership: Many people helped in making 2008 a great for year AHCEM. We had a wonderful 10 th Anniversary celebration in September. We have new people that joined AHCEM and attended the conferences. The Buddy System was used so that each new member was hooked up with a seasoned member. (I was going to say old member, but none of us old.) I find that it is great meeting new people and hearing their ideas. We did a Networking Conference in May. I enjoyed the comment by one of the participants, Can I take all of you home with me, so we can continue brainstorming. Thank you to the AHCEM Board, 10 th Anniversary committee and especially all of the AHCEM members for assisting me in I have to say with all the help from everybody it makes the President s job easy. This takes me to I will be the Past President and Nominations Chair. I will need your help to have a slate of candidates for the ballot in August. 6 SimMan Technology Connie Osborne, Hospitality Chair We just had a visit from the new Simulation Training Coordinator at Ridgewater College, Ron Flannigan, who informed us that they have purchased a SimMan/Woman that is cordless, and able to do pretty much any physical response you could request for simulated training of staff. He is able to talk, turn blue or red, pupils dilate/constrict, heart rhythm changes as medications are simulated/programmed in. You can schedule their van to come and park in your parking lot and run your staff through at intervals in their ER, or you can take the SimMan to a home, call the ambulance, complete some competencies with ambulance staff, then bring the patient to the ER, run through some competencies there, admit the patient and run through some scenarios there.take it to Xray, etc. It has skin that can be pierced for IV starting, surgical maneuvers, chest tube placement, and then replaced. They are willing to stay at one facility for several days in order to give all staff the opportunity to practice what needs to be done. It can even deliver a SimBaby Wow! There are so many new ways to give our staff the training they need, and for a small acute care facility, with the variety of services provided, it is a great opportunity. Thanks to Sherri Klaers for sharing this cartoon - which unfortunately is so true! 2009 AHCEM Board of Directors Elected Officers President Sherri Klaers skla@rice.willmar.mn.us President Elect Anna Harvala aharvala@hahc-mn.org Past-President Berdelle Ingeman bing@rice.willmar.mn.us Treasurer Heidi Miller hmiller@crmc.sisunet.org Recorder Sandy Luehrs x6029 sandy.luehrs@ridgeviewmedical.org Committee Chairs Programs Chair Vickie Ruegemer ruegemerv@centracare.com X Nominations Chair Berdelle Ingeman bing@rice.willmar.mn.us Communications/Outreach Co-Chair Tracy Marquardt tmarquardt@hahc-mn.org Communications/Outreach Co-Chair Jeanne Siedow jsiedow@healtheast.org Communications/Outreach Co-Chair Jean Ignatius x5907 JSkyline@clearwire.net Hospitality Chair Connie Osborne , x242 cosborne@pahcs.com AHCEM Staff Information Manager Dennis Denning drd@drdenning.comhighlight your point of interest here. 6
