6 Differentiating CPE for Pharmacists vs. Technicians Different objectives: ACPE accredited providers are required to have separate learning objectives for each audience (P/T), specific to what that participant should take away from the activity and apply in his/her practice. ACPE s Definition delineates appropriate areas which are specific to practice. Universal Activity Number: Intended audience suffix L01 P vs L01 T 16 Universal Activity Number Provider ID ( ) L 05-T Cosponsor Designator (000, 999) Development/ Release Year Sequential Number Format Designator L: Live offering H: Home study C: Combined Intended Audience P: Pharmacist T: Pharmacy technician Topic Designator 01: Disease State/Drug therapy 02: AIDS therapy 03: Law (related to pharmacy practice) 04: General Pharmacy 05: Patient Safety (as defined by NPSF) 17 Standard 1: Definition Please complete the following exercise in the next two minutes: Please review the learning objectives stated in Case 1 (slide 19) and determine if appropriate for pharmacy technicians. NO! Explain the underlying cause of Alzheimer s disease and other types of dementia List the therapeutic drug options for treating symptoms related to dementing illnesses Identify the most common drugs, dosages, and basic side effects related to dementing illnesses 23 Background of the QA Procedure Since January 2008, ACPE has started a prospective monitoring system of technician activities to assure the quality of activities meets the specified learning needs of technicians. In monitoring technician activities, we ve used the PTCB competencies as the baseline for reviewing activity objectives. We are reviewing all learning objectives from specific activities to see whether they are appropriate or not for the technician audience. 24 8
9 QA Procedure Once activities are reviewed, they are separated into three categories: 1. Appropriate No further action required possible letters of commendation 2. Guidance Activity content is deemed appropriate, except for minor modifications(s) example: terminology modification, pathophysiology 3. Not appropriate Statistics: Letters Sent Learning objectives do not meet specific competencies and must be modified Provider is given 30 days to make necessary changes or open dialogue with ACPE (deadline provided in the letter) 129 providers sent letters 47 responses received *A letter is sent for any guidance or not appropriate categorized activity that is inconsistent with the specific competencies. 25 QA Procedure If a provider receives a letter from ACPE, they can: 1. Make the necessary modifications via the Provider Web Tool. 2. Open a dialogue with ACPE. ACPE can provide further guidance via workshops, consults, or calls. We are making every effort to understand the nature of each individual program, collect data, and report back to the profession. 26 Instructional Design Process at a glance Set mission & goals of an organization Definition of CE entails what CE is and the competencies for P/T To understand what the needs of the audience are, do a needs assessment! Plan your activity keeping the competencies in mind 27 9
