1 Relevant Standard: IC The hospital implements its infection prevention and control plan. The hospital implements its methods to communicate responsibilities for preventing and controlling infection to licensed independent practitioners, staff, visitors, patients, and families. Information for visitors, patients, and families includes hand and respiratory hygiene practices. (See also HR , EP 4) Note: Information may have different forms of media, such as posters or pamphlets. Infants and Children in the Hospital Relevant Standard: NPSG Comply with either the current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hand hygiene guidelines or the current World Health Organization (WHO) hand hygiene guidelines. Implement a program that follows categories IA, IB, and IC of either the current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the current World Health Organization (WHO) hand hygiene guidelines. (See also IC , EP 5) Immunizations: The Facts (Part 1) Immunizations: The Facts (Part 2) Relevant Standard: NPSG Identify patients at risk for suicide. Note: This requirement applies only to psychiatric hospitals and patients being treated for emotional or behavioral disorders in general hospitals. Element of Performance: 3 When a patient at risk for suicide leaves the care of the hospital, provide suicide prevention information (such as a crisis hotline) to the patient and his or her family. Relevant Standard: PC The hospital assesses the patient who may be a victim of possible abuse and neglect. The hospital has written criteria to identify those patients who may be victims of physical assault, sexual assault, sexual molestation, domestic abuse, or elder or child abuse and neglect. (See also RI , EP 2) Note: Criteria can be based on age, sex, and circumstance. The hospital reports cases of possible abuse and neglect to external agencies, in accordance with law and regulation. Relevant Standard: PC The hospital recognizes and responds to changes in a patient s condition. Note: Hospitals are not required to create rapid response teams or medical emergency teams in order to meet this standard. The existence of these types of teams does not mean that all of the elements of performance are automatically achieved. The hospital has a process for recognizing and responding as soon as a patient s condition appears to be worsening. Element of Performance: 2 The hospital develops written criteria describing early warning signs of a change or deterioration in a patient s condition and when to seek further assistance. Relevant Standard: PC The hospital makes food and nutrition products available to its patients. Element of Performance: 6 The hospital prepares food and nutrition products using proper sanitation, temperature, light, moisture, ventilation, and security.
