CNWL Children s Service s Newsletter Edition 2 Quarter Welcome From Zoe Sargent, Associate Director, Children s Service Welcome to this quarter s newsletter for CNWL s children s services. The aim of this newsletter is to keep you informed of what is going on around the Trust relating to our large portfolio of children s services. In this edition: General News from CNWL children s services Children Service awards Key Events QI and children s services Communications News from CNWL children s services The London CAMHS service is just opening our new Tier 4 adolescents mental health acute bed unit. Based in South Kensington; the Lavender Walk Adolescent inpatient unit will have up to 12 teenagers aged resident at any one time. We hope to reduce the length of time any young person needs to be away from their home by working quickly with our existing community teams, to get these young people well enough to go home and continue their treatment in a community setting. The launch event and walk around of the unit was fantastic last week and it was so lovely to meet the new staff who are getting ready for their first patients next week.

Hillingdon: speech and language therapy: Our wonderful SLT team in Hillingdon have produced a video Talk to me highlights how parents can help young children learn to talk from birth. Communication is a critical life skill. It describes five top tips for talking. To view the video, visit the Hillingdon Talks website. The website also has lots of useful information, advice and resources for parents. Parent Strategy sheets were also co-produced with parent input around how to enhance childrens communication skills. You can also find the team on facebook: Camden Early Years (health visiting) plans are moving ahead with Camden Local authority to integrated and work in our new partnership model through a Section 75 agreement. There will be some local events for staff to hear more about this so please do attend one. School Health Services The Goodall school nursing leads gave a joint presentation at the Goodall Festival which was well received- well done teams! A Grenfell infant school choir with the support from their school nurse also sang beautifully and had most of the audience in tears- Huge congrats to them! Service and individual Awards Goodall celebration event: Children service and staff awards: Identified so many amazing team members across our services and we are particularly keen to celebrate our children s staff who were nominated or winners of awards: Camden s Social Communication Assessment Service won the award for Innovation- well done all your QI work on reducing waiting time for ASD assessments sounds fabulious and worth sharing! Above and beyond: Winner Jennifer Wauchope, Administrator in Westminster CAMHS Rising star award: Highly commended Sia Bono, School Health Technician, Camden School Nursing Service Well done all! Here are a few photos from the day:

Harrow Infant-Feeding Peer supporters made the local press with their award win! Harrow Breastfeeding team win local Heroes awards deserving winners On the night, ten heroes were crowned 2018 winners and the Infant Feeding Team representing CNWL, scooped both the Health and Wellbeing Award and the judges Volunteers of the Year award. The teams efforts have been nationally recognised by children s charity UNICEF making Harrow one of the best boroughs in London for mothers to access breastfeeding help.. Geraldine Fay from The Infant Feeding Team said: Winning the awards was very emotional. I had not even thought about the possibility of winning one let alone two, so we were all very stunned and incredibly excited It makes me feel that what we do is truly valued, not just by the families we help, but more widely in the community and by the council. The atmosphere was superb and it was such a treat. In my eyes it was the Oscars for volunteers and we definitely felt like stars. Nurse of the year awards were held last week at the Governer hotel in London where Sandra James, team leader in Hillingdon School Nursing was nominated along with 8 other for Nurse of the Year. Unfortunately, Sandra didn t win but what an achievement to be shortlisted and held in such great company! Well done Sandra. In Milton Keynes one of our Consultant Community Paediatrician has won a top Milton Keynes award. Dr Chinwe Osuchukwu has picked up the coveted Outstanding Contribution Award in this year s Women Leaders MK Awards. She had been nominated in the Professional Services category, but judges decided her work towards Milton Keynes merited the outstanding award. Dr Osuchukwu had been nominated for two main reasons. Firstly, in helping her department see patients quicker by reorganising the skill mix within the team so staff were able to do more but quicker, even though the team remained the same size.

The waiting time for assessment is now significantly below the national six month standard and means this group of children are able to get the support they need more quickly. Secondly, for making sure that medical education standards within CNWL Milton Keynes remain high through her role of Acting Deputy Director of Medical Education (Milton Keynes). CNWL held volunteer of the year awards this quarter. There were some truly inspirational nominations for individuals supporting children s teams including the overall winner: Helen Evans, a Volunteer Administrator at Laurel Lodge and Oak Farm, received the award in our general volunteer category. She won for her commitment and dedication to both teams within Hillingdon Community Health, where her role consists of making up packs for District Nurses, supporting nursery nurses and paediatric nurses, sending patient reminder letters and recording health visiting new birth and transfers.in the nomination, Helen is described as always being positive and cheerful and that her input is invaluable, she is thoroughly deserving of recognition for the generosity she has shown in giving so much of her time over so many years. Linda Mafham- nclinic support volunteer Health visting (Westcroft- Milton Keynes) (Nominee) Linda helps weekly health visting baby clinics always arriving with a smile on her face and is always full of energy and enuthisiasm. Clients love Linda s friendly manner and her ability to engage with both parents and babies. Caitriona Carroll- Volunteer Breastfeeding Peer supporter- Stanmore Park Children s centre (Harrow) (Nominee) Caitriona spends Thursday mornings at the centre running a brestfeeding support group and has been volunateering for 4 years. Aside from being very knowledgable and providing new mother with practical evidence based information; she is kind and compassionate. Do consider who you might nominate next year for a Gem, external award or inspiration award we have great staff out there and you all make a difference! Key events Launch of Harrow 0-19 children s service On the 2 nd Oct we had the formal launch of the Harrow 0-19 Children s Services. The event was hosted by Harrow Council and opened by the Director of Public Health Carole Furlong. Councillor Simon Brown gave us all a warm welcome and confirmed how excited Harrow local authority are to be working with CNWL

across the 0-19 services. Claire Murdoch and Maria O Brien came along to welcome the new teams from the Trust board and confirm our commitment to delivering a quality service to the children and families of Harrow. Nicola Nuttall, School Nurse Team Leader in HIllingdon, delivered a joint presentation with social enterprise My Time Active, on running the MEND programme in schools across Hillingdon, at the RCN conference in August. MEND, which stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it, is a weight prevention and treatment programme for children and young people. It aims to get children, their parents and carers eating healthier and leading more active lifestyles. Nearly a quarter of children in England are obese or overweight by the time they start primary school at the age of five. Nicola, who is a Trust lead for obesity, received many positive questions from the audience, and was interviewed by the Nursing Standard on the MEND programme for a podcast. She was also asked to write articles for the popular journal, as well as for the Fit and Healthy Childhood publication, and the School Nursing Journal. QI and children s services I have been asked what QI projects are going on around the trust relating to our Children s service so here are the 15 project lists as of last week on LiveQI that may be of interest to some of you: Goodall Inner London : Reducing waiting times for Autism assessments to begin for school aged children in Camden.- Hannah Coles

Kirstie Sharpe Increase service user feedback and involvement of service users including promotion of service and accessibility of information within the service redesign of the Milton Keynes Universal 0-19 Service. Kirstie Sharp There is lots going on around the Trust- please get in contact with anyone who you think is doing a piece of work that would benefit you and your teams! Make sure you register your projects too!

Communications Here to start the section on communication is some positive service user feedback from Goodall division. (Will ensure I get some Diggory quotes next time) I love to hear from the service s news of good practice and innovation please with anything you would like me to share with the wider children s service workforce and our commissioners. I am also looking for invites to come out with any of our children s clinicians. Please let me know if I can spend a session with you: zoe.sargent1@nhs.net invites always welcome! Do also follow on Thank you for all being amazing!
