5 Event Session Details WELCOME Speaker: Mary McVicars Heckel, PT, DPT, CLT-LANA, CWS, Current President Idaho PUPC THE BRADEN AND BEYOND: MATCHING THE ASSESSMENT TO THE INTERVENTIONS Speaker: Pamela Scarborough, PT, DPT, MS, CDE, CWS, CEEAA The presenter will highlight accurate application of the Braden scale in the clinical setting and demonstrate how to apply score findings with treatment options/applications. 1. Report components of the Braden Scale for pressure ulcer risk assessment. 2. Report three patient specific interventions related to Braden Scale prediction of risk. 3. Report three appropriate referrals to the IDT to promote reduced pressure ulcer risk in those patients at risk of pressure ulcer development. WHAT S NEW IN PRESSURE ULCER PREVENTION: IT S ALL ABOUT THE GUIDELINES Speaker: Joyce Black, PhD, RN, CWCN, FAAN New Pressure Ulcer Guidelines were released in 2014 with some new recommendations and the removal of others. This session will also address what is new including pressure ulcers from medical devices and other emerging technologies to prevent ulcers. 1. Discuss changes in the 2014 International Pressure Ulcer Guidelines. 2. Identify methods to reduce pressure ulcers from medical devices. 3. Describe emerging technologies for pressure ulcer prevention. IS ADULT MALNUTRITION A PRECURSOR TO PRESSURE ULCERS?: IT S ALL ABOUT THE INTAKE Speaker: Becky Dorner, RDN, LD, FAND Although nutrition plays a critical role in the prevention, development and treatment of pressure ulcers, practitioners continue to have many questions about this association. In this presentation, participants will learn: How to accurately determine whether an adult has malnutrition, using standardized nutrition screening tools. How malnutrition increases the risk for pressure ulcer development and interferes with wound healing. What the latest research and the NPUAP guidelines have to say about the role of nutrition in pressure ulcer prevention and treatment.
6 Practical nutrition and hydration solutions for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers - including the role of oral nutrition supplements and the amino acids arginine and glutamine. 1. Learn how to accurately determine whether an adult has malnutrition, using standardized nutrition screening tools. 2. Learn how malnutrition increases the risk for pressure ulcer development and interferes with wound healing. 3. Learn what the latest research and the NPUAP guidelines have to say about the role of nutrition in pressure ulcer prevention and treatment. 4. Learn practical nutrition and hydration solutions for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers - including the role of oral nutrition supplements and the amino acids arginine and glutamine. UNDERSTANDING SKIN DETERIORATION: IT S ALL ABOUT THE HANDOFF Speaker: Joyce Black, PhD, RN, CWCN, FAAN Pressure ulcers may not have started on your watch! This session will help your CSI team on understanding where and when the pressure ulcer started. However, regardless of when and where the ulceration started, a clear and comprehensive hand -off between sites of care can prevent deterioration across the continuum of care. Discuss the use of root cause analysis in pressure ulcer assessment. Describe comprehensive data to share at hand-off within the facility and between facilities. Identify the potential communication with patient and family during hand-offs. COMMON BARIATRIC SKIN, WOUND AND MOBILITY CHALLENGES: IT S ALL ABOUT THE SOLUTIONS Speaker: Susan Gallagher, PhD, RN Over two-thirds of Americans living in the US are overweight or obese. A high degree of adiposity affects every cell, organ and system of the body, including the skin. Challenges in lifting, turning and repositioning the larger, heavier patient places workers at risk for injury, but the failure to mobilize obese patients places the individual at risk for immobility-related consequences of care. This section explores the intersections of bariatrics, skin and wound care, and safe patient handling strategies. 1. Relate the impact of patient mobility to skin health and pressure ulcer prevention. 2. Identify three concerns related to mobilizing the bariatric patient. 3. State three issues of skin health related to the bariatric patient.
7 DOES ONE GOOD TURN DESERVE ANOTHER?: IT S ALL ABOUT THE OFFLOADING What the Braden does and doesn t tell us about who/why/when/how to turn our patients Speaker: Margaret Doucette, DO, CWSP, Chief; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Boise VAMC, Clinical Associate Professor, University of Washington This presentation will explore the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to pressure related tissue injury with a focus on tissue tolerance and off-loading/repositioning. Historical perspective will be presented and the background of the 'turn q 2' will be explored. Current research looking at the use of Braden subscores, in combination with other variables to strengthen our ability to identify high risk patients will be presented. The use of technology in appropriating effective interventions and allocating resources will round out the discussion. 1. Identify 3 intrinsic factors that influence tissue tolerance of pressure. 2. Describe 2 challenges of utilizing the subscales (activity, mobility) of the Braden. 3. Identify 3 variables/pu risk factors that strengthen the application of the Braden Score. 4. Describe 3 effective interventions for off loading.
