1 2019 Leadership Symposium June 5, 2019 Harraseeket Inn Freeport
2 Agenda 8:30 AM Registration Casco Bay Room 9:00 AM Courage to Care Arleen Smith DRIVE Accepting responsibility and providing compassionate care to those who need it most is an incredible gift. It brings us joy, satisfaction and personal fulfillment. However, caring for others can also become exhausting when you don t have the support of your co-workers. In this unique and powerful presentation, you ll discover why having the courage to care requires more than just showing up every day. It requires that we, first and foremost, care deeply for our residents and one another. It takes great courage to do the right thing, which is a necessary ingredient for transforming what we do to what we know it can become. Through caring and connecting with one another, we can build relationships with those around us. Join us to learn how building up our field s reputation is necessary for attracting and retaining staff whose hearts are motivated by love and will serve with enthusiasm. You ll hear personal stories from a caring and compassionate nurse who learned, firsthand, that caring extends beyond our residents. When everyone in your community has the courage to care, despite what happens around them, you create a beautiful environment for everyone. Change starts with you! 10:15 AM Break 10:30 AM National Long-Term Care Update: The State of the Industry Cliff Porter American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living Is the future of long-term care constantly on the minds of your leadership team? Workforce challenges ~ shortage of qualified staff ~ regulatory oversight ~ a new payment model ~ aging baby boomers demanding innovative service plans ~ person-centered care. What is the state of the industry? In this session, you will receive the latest information on what s happening nationally that will impact both nursing homes and assisted living communities. Topics for discuss include industry trends, anticipated changes, legislative agendas, financial challenges, regulatory issues, and more. 11:30 AM Aging and LTSS Strategic Initiatives at Maine DHHS Paul Saucier State of Maine The Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS) supports older and disabled adults in Maine by providing adult protective, brain injury, other related conditions, intellectual and developmental disability, long term care, and aging and community services. In this session, the Director of OADS Paul Saucier will describe the major initiatives planned at OADS. 12:00 PM Lunch Maine Harvest Dining Room - 1 -
3 Speaker Bios 1:00 PM Planning for Success: Taking Control of Your Organization s Future Jeffery Wahlstrom Starboard Leadership The environment for long term care has never been more challenging. Increased and changing regulation, ever-evolving funding structures, worker shortages, aging infrastructure, and shifting demographics threaten our industry and the residents and families we serve. It s easy to find yourself always playing defense. In this workshop you ll learn how to use some essential planning tools and strategies that will help you to take control of your organization s future, take advantage of new opportunities, and thrive in even the most challenging of times. 2:30 PM Break 2:45 PM CHANGE AGENT! Leading Organizational Transformation TJ Titcomb Cargas Systems Most of today s health care communities are working laboratories of organizational change. This workshop will provide managers and supervisors practical tools to plan purposeful change, share information, and promote participation. Leaders will examine the power of realistic expectations and learning from experience. They will discover how to encourage and use resistance to improve the changes. We ll also create a TO DON T List of management actions and attitudes that create barriers to change. Clifton (Clif) Porter, II is the Senior Vice President of Government Relations at the American Health Care Association (AHCA) and the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL), which represents more than 12,000 for-and not-for-profit nursing homes, assisted living residences, and facilities for the care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Porter has been serving the needs of seniors in the Long Term Care field for over 30 years, beginning his career as an Administrator in Training at a Skilled Nursing Facility in 1989, serving as an Assistant Administrator and Administrator of several Skilled Nursing Centers from 1990 through 1998, as well as leading HCR ManorCare s Government Relations Department from 2004 to 2013 as its Vice President of Government Relations and serving on various state health care association boards from 2004 to Now, serving as the top lobbyist in AHCA/NCAL, Clif works to promote the association s legislative agenda. Under his leadership, AHCA was intricately involved in many legislative accomplishments including the passage of the IMPACT Act, repeal of the physician SGR, implementation of SNF Value Based Purchasing, and the permanent repeal of Part B therapy caps. Paul Saucier is the Director of the Maine DHHS Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS). Prior to arriving at OADS, Paul was a Senior Director at IBM Watson Health, where he specialized in integrated care models for older persons and persons with disabilities, including those with both Medicaid and Medicare coverage (dually eligible beneficiaries). In that role, he consulted with Federal and State clients, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, the Pennsylvania Office of Long Term Living and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Paul has also held positions at the USM Muskie School of Public Service, the National Academy for State Health Policy and the Maine Legislature s non-partisan Office of Policy and Legal Analysis. He is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance. 4:00 PM Adjourn - 2 -
