1 2 nd Annual Examination Preparation Intensive Course in Rehabilitation Medicine June 2015 St Vincent s Clinic, Sydney Course Information for Attendees This course focuses on preparing the trainee for success in OSCE style examinations by focusing on examinations and practicing skills such as critical thinking under pressure, focused physical examination techniques and managing exam nerves. The five- day course will cover approaches to patient management and rehabilitation planning in Neuro- rehabilitation (including SCI and TBI), musculoskeletal and Pain rehabilitation (including amputees) and geriatric rehabilitation. Sessions will last 2 hours and involve the way the history and examination assist in writing a rehabilitation plan and the solving of clinical rehabilitation problems and one - three typical OSCE cases will be presented, analysed and marked. Two days of the course will be dedicated to examination techniques for OSCE. This will include an eight- station OSCE practice examination, presentations by organisational psychologists on exam presentation style, management of performance anxiety and presenting under pressure. The skills required to write and assess OSCE questions will also be discussed and practical examples will be prepared. The intensive course is intended to teach trainees the skills necessary to use theory and medical knowledge in order to pass OSCE style exams. It is envisioned that during the exam preparation phase (June- August), these skills can be practiced and refined. This course is not an update course and candidates will be expected to have background knowledge in clinical medicine, functional anatomy and rehabilitation medicine. The course is not a replacement for reading, studying or reinforcing information but rather concentrates on using that information for critical thinking problems solving and passing the OSCE style examination. Additional opportunity This year the examination preparation course coincides with the inaugural workshop of the Rehabilitation Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand. The society is charged with representing you on matters that the RACP cannot such as private practice and industrial matters including salaries, job positions and access to Medicare items. In the inaugural year, trainees can join for free and one of the course s lectures will occur before the dinner meeting on how to successfully undertake a job interview. Prof Lyn Lee (University of Notre Dame) and Dr Brett Gardiner (Medical Superintendent St Vincent s Hospital) both dual fellows in rehab

2 medicine and medical administration will undertake a mock interview and discuss how you might approach successful job application. This part of the course prepares you to be a consultant. The cost for the dinner & lecture at the five star Amora Hotel near Sydney s famous Rocks area is $70 (consultants have subsidised trainees $30/person) and following the dinner where you can meet colleagues from all states, there is an after dinner talk how to get into bed with the media rehabilitating our image?!. SPEAKERS Convenor and Presenter of Stroke Rehab and Pain Medicine Sessions A/Prof Steven Faux is Director of Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine at St Vincent s Hospital Sydney. He has been chairman of the NSW Branch Education Sub Committee and a member of the Faculty s Education and Training committee. He has undertaken research in the use of simulated patients in undergraduate exams, assisted in the introduction of simulated patients for undergraduate medical exams at UNSW and developed the calibration exercises for supervisors of rehabilitation medicine trainees in long case assessment. As a current supervisor, he has set a number of practice OSCE s but has never held a position on the court of examiners, nor is he an examiner for the Faculty. He has a number of research interests in the area of Stroke Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine Examination preparation Mr George Stent is a trained psychologist and worked in the Rehabilitation Medicine and Spinal Medicine Departments of Prince of Wales/Price Henry hospitals for several years. He then worked in the advertising industry s teaching presentation skills and analysing the psychological impacts of different advertising campaigns Other speakers A number of speakers have been approached who are considered experts in their area of Rehabilitation Medicine and have shown interest in teaching in the course although they are yet to be confirmed. It is important that candidates undertake this measure with seriousness as it will confer an impression to examiners regarding commitment and professionalism. Remember this course is an intensive examination preparation course. Please dress as if you were attending your exams. PHOTOGRAPHY Sessions and course materials cannot be recorded or photographed. This course may well be held next year, for candidates sitting exams and as such copies of this course and course materials would contravene principles of intellectual property.

3 ELECTRONIC DEVICES and WIFI ACCESS All candidates will be expected to bring their own laptop, ipad, or other electronic device. Wi- Fi will not be available to candidates via the hospital s Wi- Fi. You will need access to the Internet at your own expense. This facility must be available to you, as you will be required to do brief literature searches and search Google images from time to time. EXAMINATION KIT Please ensure you to bring an examination kit (the one that you intend to use in the exam). This needs to include but is not restricted to the following; Stethoscope Neuro kit Ophthalmoscope Hand held goniometer Bluetac ball Please note, no equipment will be supplied as it is expected that you have a kit organised PARKING St Vincent's Public Hospital Operated by PARKSMART LTD (Ph: ).
