2 PN Mental Health Course Outline Fall 2014 Instructor: Carol Sherrer 1509-D carol.sherrer@rdc.ab.ca Office Hours: Available by appointment. Calendar Description: 3 credit (6.5-0) 7 weeks Focus is on the promotion of mental health, prevention and management of mental disorders throughout the life cycle, within various health care settings. Prerequisites: PN 225, PN 226, PN 227, PN 229 Course Hours: 3 credit course; 45 class hours Tuesday 1430h-1720 room 2501 & Thursday 1430h-1720h Room 2501 Course Description: PN 231 is an introduction to the assessment and treatment of clients with psychiatric and mental health issues. It includes basic mental health concepts, therapeutic relationships, assessment strategies and the nursing process, legal and ethical practices, mental health issues and treatments. This course will include lectures, discussions and group work. Required Resources: American Psychological Association. (2010). Publication manual of the American psychological association. 4 Assignments: Assignments are to be completed and submitted as scheduled in the course unless the instructor has granted an extension. Requests for extensions must be made to the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the time the assignment is to be submitted. One grade category (5% per day) will be deducted for each day an assignment is late without a prior approved extension. All written assignments must be referenced using APA format (6 th edition). Final Examination: Content from the entire course is tested with a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions. Prior to the test, students will be given further information. Final exam policy will be followed. Student Misconduct/Dispute: Students should refer to the Student Dispute, Appeal and Misconduct Processes Policy and Standard Practice should questions or concerns about the Course Outline not be resolved directly with the instructor. Prior Learning (PLAR): This course may be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment. 5 Grading System: To successfully pass this course an overall grade point of 2.0 must be achieved when the marks from the assignments, exams, and quizzes are computed. All the assignments, exams, and quizzes will be assigned a mark and the final grade will be computed -based on the assigned value of each assignment, exam, or quiz. See student handbook. Last Day to Add/Drop: September 8, 2014 Last Day to Withdraw without Academic Penalty: October 17, 2014 ASSIGNMENTS: PN 231 Nurses Night at the Movies Assignment This assignment should be typed and double-spaced. The assignment should be a maximum of 5 pages for 20% of the final mark. The Care Plan assignment is worth 15% of the final PN 231 mark. Objectives: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and apply the concepts of the mental health status assessment to a client in a movie of their choice. 2. Students will have the opportunity to plan care for a client with a mental health disorder. 4

6 Assignment #1: You will watch a movie depicting a mental health issue. Suggested movies: Girl Interrupted As Good as it Gets (1997) A Beautiful Mind One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest (be careful with character selection) **Other movies may be acceptable, please consult with the instructor prior to using them The role of the LPN in the first step of the nursing process is to assist with a mental health status assessment. This assessment is completed on admission to a psychiatric facility and it assists to determine the client s mental capabilities. For this assignment, each student will complete a mental health status assessment on a character in the movie with a psychiatric illness. This assessment must address all the components listed below. The mental status exam is a series of assessments that include the following: History General appearance and motor behavior Mood and affect Thought process and content Sensorium and intellectual processes Judgment and insight Self-concept Roles and relationships Physiologic and self-care concerns Include also the medical diagnosis and a brief description if the illness in your own words Hints *A marking guide is posted on Blackboard. Information for this assessment will be aided by using you text. Do the assessment portion as a chart. Point form is OK. Use charting language. Some of the characters in these movies undergo dramatic changes throughout the films. Try to choose one scene or time to analyze. Note this time/scene on you assignment. Assignment #2: You will be assigned to a group and Mental Health diagnosis. Choose 2 nursing diagnosis for a problem (or strength) common to the diagnosis and create a care plan. One should be medication related. The marking guide for the care plan is attached. 5

7 *See marking guide on blackboard Assessment Nursing diagnosis Goals Interventions (Include at least 3 per diagnosis) Evaluation List assessments you would expect to see for a client with your assigned diagnosis Include medications/tx or compliance with same Must be written in proper format i.e. (actual or potential problem or strength) r/t (cause of the problem) The diagnosis is NOT a medical diagnosis and must be something that nursing can take care of i.e. Risk for skin breakdown r/t decreased mobility The cause of the problem provides the basis for potential nursing interventions. Goals are derived from the client problem, and aim to resolve or improve the problem. They must be realistic measurable, and within a specified time frame. May have more than one goal for each diagnosis. Include short term and long term goals where applicable. I.e. client will show no evidence of skin breakdown (such as redness, swelling, open areas..) by 01/10/03 Interventions: relate to correcting the cause of the problem Relate to achieving goals (there is usually more than one intervention required to meet a goal) Include what, where, when, by whom, for how long, & how often i.e. client will be repositioned with 2 person assist q2h and prn. Rationale must be provided for each intervention and reference provided. I.e. repositioning aids in decreasing pressure to bony prominence and helps to increase circulation (Black, Hawks & Keene 2002, p.334)., (PN 132 Module, p112) A reference list is to be attached to the assignment * Marks will be allotted for spelling, grammar, appropriate sources of information, reference list. * You can use a movie character from your other assignment if you find it helpful to have a real character to work from Were the goals met? Fully? Partially? Not at all? What were your observations that made you decide if the goal was met? I.e. no evidence of redness or localized edema on any bony prominence. For any goal that was not met, how would you modify your plan to help meet the goal? Is further evaluation necessary? 6
