1 PATIENT & CAREGIVER EDUCATION Instructions for Pulmonary Procedures This information will help you prepare for your pulmonary procedure at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK). About Your Procedure The procedure you will be having is: Your procedure will be done at Memorial Hospital (MSK s main hospital). The address is: Memorial Hospital 1275 York Avenue (between 67 and 68 Streets) New York, NY Your procedure will be in eier e operating room or e endoscopy suite. Your doctor or nurse will tell you where your procedure will be. They will also check off e correct box below. The operating room Take e B elevator to Presurg ical Center (PSC) on e 6 floor. The endoscopy suite Take e M elevator to e 2 nd floor. Before Your Procedure Ask about your medications You may need to stop taking some of your medications before your procedure. Talk wi your doctor about which medications are safe for you to stop taking. We have included some common examples below. Instructions for Pulmonary Procedures 1/7

2 Anticoagulants (blood inners) If you take a blood inner (medication at affects e way your blood clots), ask e doctor performing your procedure what to do. Their contact information is listed at e end of is resource. Wheer ey recommend you stop taking e medication depends on e reason you re taking it. Do not stop taking your blood inner medication wiout talking wi your doctor. Examples of Blood T hinners apixaban dalteparin (Eliquis ) (Fragmin ) meloxicam (Mobic ) ticagrelor (Brilinta ) aspirin dipyridamole nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory tinzaparin (Persantine ) drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Innohep ) (Advil ) or naproxen (Aleve ) celecoxib edoxaban (Celebrex ) (Savaysa ) cilostazol enoxaparin (Pletal ) (Lovenox ) clopidogrel Fondaparinux (Plavix ) (Arixtra ) pentoxifylline (Trental ) warfarin prasugrel (Effient rivaroxaban (Xarelto ) (Coumadin ) dabigatran (Pradaxa ) heparin (shot under your skin) sulfasalazine (Azulfidine, Sulfazine ) Please read our resource Common Medications Containing Aspirin and Oer Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) ( It has important information about medications you ll need to avoid before your procedure and what medications you can take instead. Medications for diabetes If you take insulin or oer medications for diabetes, ask e doctor who prescribes e medication what you should do e morning of your procedure. You may need to change e dose before your procedure. Diuretics (water pills) If you take any diuretics (medications at make you urinate more often), ask Instructions for Pulmonary Procedures 2/7

3 e doctor performing your procedure what to do. You may need to stop taking em e day of your procedure. Diuretics are sometimes called water pills. Some examples are furosemide (Lasix Talk wi a nurse and plan your care ) and hydrochloroiazide. Before your procedure, you will talk wi a nurse to plan your care during your procedure. The way you talk wi e nurse depends on where your procedure will be done. Your doctor or nurse will tell you what to expect. They will also check off e correct box below. You may have medical tests to help plan your procedure. These tests may include an electrocardiog ram (EKG) to check your heart rhym, a chest x-ray, blood tests, and any oer tests necessary to plan your care. These tests may be done before or after you talk wi e nurse. The nurse may also recommend you see oer healcare providers. If your procedure will be done in e operating room, you will have a Presurgical Testing (PST) appointment wiin 30 days of your procedure. You can eat and take your usual medications e day of your PST appointment. During your appointment, you will meet wi a nurse practitioner (NP) who works closely wi anesesiolog y staff (doctors and specialized nurses who will g ive you medication to make you sleep during your procedure). Your NP will review your medical and surg ical history wi you. They will talk wi you about which medications you should take e morning of your procedure. You will also have medical tests to help plan your procedure. It s very helpful if you bring e following to your PST appointment: A list of all e medications you re taking, including bo prescription and over-e-counter medications, patches, and creams. Results of any tests done outside of MSK, such as a cardiac stress test, echocardiog ram (echo), or carotid Doppler study. The name(s) and telephone number(s) of your doctor(s). 4 If your procedure will be done in e endoscopy suite, a nurse will call you 3 days before your procedure. The nurse will confirm e type of procedure(s) you re having and review e instructions in is resource wi you. They will also ask you questions about your medical history and all medications you re taking. They will talk wi you about which medications you should take e morning of your procedure. Arrange for someone to take you home You must have a responsible care partner take you home after your procedure. Make sure to plan is before e day of your procedure. If you don t have someone to take you home, call one of e agencies below. They will send someone to go home wi you. There s usually a charge for is service, and you will need to provide transportation. Agencies in New York Agencies in New Jersey Partners in Care: Caring People: Caring People: Tell us if you re sick If you develop any illness (such as a fever, cold, sore roat, or e flu) before your procedure, please call your doctor who scheduled e procedure. After 5:00 PM, during e weekend, and on holidays, call and ask for e fellow on call for e Pulmonary Service. The Day Before Your Procedure Note e time of your procedure A clerk from e Admitting Office will call you after 2:00 PM e day before your procedure. If your procedure is scheduled on a Monday, you will be called on e Friday before. The clerk will tell you what time you should arrive at e hospital for your procedure. They will also remind you where to g o on e day of your procedure. This will be one of e locations below. Instructions for Pulmonary Procedures 4/7

5 Operating room 1275 York Avenue (between East 67 and East 68 Streets) B elevator to e Presurgical Center (PSC) on e 6 floor Endo sco py suite 1275 York Avenue (between East 67 and East 68 Streets) nd M elevator to e 2 floor If you don t receive a call by 7:00 PM, please call Instructions for eating and drinking before your procedure Do not eat anying after midnight e night before your procedure. This includes hard candy and g um. Between midnig ht and up until 2 hours before your scheduled arrival time, you may drink a total of 12 ounces of water (see fig ure). Starting 2 hours before your scheduled arrival time, do not eat or drink anying. This includes water. The Day of Your Procedure Things to remember Take only e medications you were instructed to take e morning of your procedure. Take em wi a few sips of water. Don t put on any lotion, cream, powder, deodorant, makeup, perfume, or colog ne. Remove any jewelry, including body piercing s. Leave valuables, such as credit cards and jewelry, at home. If you wear contact lenses, wear your g lasses instead. Instructions for Pulmonary Procedures 5/7

6 What to bring wi you A list of all e medications you take. Medications for breaing problems (such as inhalers), if you take any. Medications for chest pain, if you take any. A case for your glasses or contacts. Your Heal Care Proxy form, if you have completed one. Your breaing machine for sleep apnea (such as a CPAP), if you have one. Where to Park MSK s parking garage is located on East 66 Street between York and First Avenues. If you have questions about prices, call To reach e garage, turn onto East 66 Street from York Avenue. What to expect Once you re in e hospital, you will be asked to state and spell your name and date of bir many times. This is for your safety. People wi e same or similar names may be having procedures on e same day. After Your Procedure If fluid was drained from your chest during your procedure, you will have a follow-up appointment in e Pleural Disease Clinic about 2 to 4 weeks after Instructions for Pulmonary Procedures 6/7

7 your procedure. Your appointment will be wi one of e interventional pulmonolog y advanced practice providers (APPs), which include NPs and physician assistants (PAs). APPs are medical professionals who work closely wi your doctor. If you have any questions about your follow up-appointment in e Pleural Disease Clinic, call Contact Information If you have any questions or concerns, please call Interventional Pulmonolog y at LUNG ( ). If you had fluid drained from your chest, call e Pleural Disease Clinic at You can reach a staff member Monday roug h Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
