2 TARGET AUDIENCE This conference was created specifically for individuals serving in an Assisted Living (AL), Independent Living (IL) and/or Residential Care Community in Maine. The agenda typically focuses on national and local industry trends, regulatory changes, evidence-based practices and innovative ideas. It s also a great venue for networking with peers to exchange ideas, collaborate on issues and challenges, and discover ways to fine tune your business practices while ensuring the health and well-being of your residents. Initiatives being undertaken that affect assisted living will be presented including the latest information available on Congressional and Administration activities in the State of Maine. 11:15 AM Assisted Living, a State Update Sarah Taylor, Director, Division of Licensing and Certification State of Maine Maine s Assisted Housing Program will, likely, see some changes in the coming year. In this session, participants will receive an update on work being carried out in the State of Maine that will impact assisted housing and assisted living providers and the residents in your care. Topics for discussion include anticipated regulatory changes, the new PSS curriculum, increasing acuity of residents in assisted housing, surveyor concerns, industry challenges and more. 1

This session will highlight the principles of nutritionally balanced menu development using a farm-to-table approach. You will discuss how recipes support food quality, regulation compliance, cost control, and inventory and procurement in a scratch-cook food operation. You will discover the importance of accommodating special diets and food allergies, and review strategies for managing special dietary needs in your resident population. Finally, you will learn how to use recipes and menus to increase dining satisfaction through marketing and resident participation. 2:15 PM Break 2:30 PM Training for the Ages: Creating an Effective Multi-Generation Team Lori A. Hoffner Supporting CommUnity, Inc. Do you ever find yourself shaking your head in wonderment with your younger employees? Are there times that you wish you could get your traditionalist staff on board with a new way of doing things? Many of the approaches that each person takes are deeply rooted in their generational experiences. This training will help everyone understand what those differences are and how we can support each other while also gaining insight on why we do what we do. You will discover ways to blend the different generations into a cohesive and positive team as well as create an environment of cooperation that meets the needs of your staff regardless of their age. 4 Speaker Biographies: Rick Erb is the President and CEO of the Maine Health Care Association. Prior to his appointment in 2001, he served as a CEO in local and county government in Maine and New York for over 20 years. He began his career as a town manager at age 21, immediately after receiving a bachelor s degree in Public Management from the University of Maine. More than two decades later, he was awarded a master s degree in Community and Rural Development from Cornell University. His thesis involved a study of social capital in the long-term care setting and its effect on staff retention. He was a member of the Beta Class of Leadership Maine and has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations and legislative commissions. Lori A. Hoffner has been offering training for positive youth development, community networking and organizational relationship building since 1997 and has spoken nationally regarding youth program development, employment and staff engagement as well as multiple community issues. For 11 years, Lori was the Executive Director of PACCT, a small non-profit in Jefferson County, Colorado, an organization dedicated to the success of youth and community. Lori specializes in positive staff and organizational relationships based on generational studies and research. Additionally, she has years of experience with youth programming, program development and youth staffing. Dr. Coreyann Poly is a registered dietitian, licensed nutritionist and certified diabetes educator with over 20 years experience in clinical nutrition and dining services for geriatric/sub-acute populations. Coreyann has worked tirelessly on healthier menus and nutritional services for these residents. She is the primary author of Diet & Dining Manual for Extended Care in a Culture Change Environment. Dr. Poly earned her doctorate in Medical Nutrition Sciences from BU School of Medicine. She received the Julie Fund Award for her research on Choline Intake and Alzheimer s disease. Dr. Poly collaborated with the Neurology team at the Framingham Heart Study, examining risk factors for stroke and dementia. She is an Assistant Professor at Framingham State University and the creator of Dietitians of New England, LLC. She maintains a private practice in Uxbridge, MA, offering medical nutrition therapy for chronic disease prevention and management. She also conducts educational seminars for various organizations throughout New England. Lee Ann Szelog is a sought-after speaker in Maine as well as nationally and internationally, and an award-winning author and photographer who has learned to rise above adversity, find her voice, and challenge herself to overcome her fears and live life to the fullest. After enjoying a successful 28-year career as a marketing and training executive, and receiving national awards for her work, Lee has been President of Simply Put, LLC, a company she founded 11 years ago to help individuals, organizations and companies nurture change, growth and prosperity. Her presentations focus on communication, time management, teamwork, leadership & management, creativity, attitude, and maximizing one s overall happiness and capacity, personally and professionally. Lee is the author of several professional development programs, including The Art of Human Relations, Your Quest for Excellence, The Art of Public Speaking, Communication Excellence, and The Art of Supervision. Sarah Taylor, MBA, FACMPE, is the Director of the Division of Licensing and Certification in Maine and has been with the Department of Health and Human Services since Sarah has over thirty years of experience working in healthcare administration and as a healthcare consultant. She has her Master s in Business Administration and is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives. 3

5 Program Policies & General Information: Registration We encourage you to register early as space is limited for some of our programs. Registrations cannot be accepted over the telephone, they must be submitted in writing. There are two options to register: 1. Visit our website to complete our online registration form, or 2. Complete the paper Registration Form included in this brochure, fax it to MHCA at , and mail the original (along with your payment) to: Maine Health Care Association, 317 State Street, Augusta, ME Tuition Payment is required at the time of registration or at least one week in advance. Acceptable forms of payment include cash, checks and credit cards. For programs with limited enrollment, priority will be granted to paid participants. Group Discount Typically, if you register more than one participant from the same facility or corporate office, after paying full price for the first registrant, a $10.00 discount applies for each additional participant from the same facility or corporate office. MHCA reserves the right to choose if/when group discounts can be offered. Confirmation Letters A confirmation notice will be sent to the you provided, for each individual participant, about one week prior to the event. In addition to program details and instructions, we will include the link and/ or special instructions for printing the handouts. To make sure the information is directed to the right people, please provide updated contact information and addresses for your registrants. If you register less than a week in advance, and you do not receive this notice, feel free to contact MHCA at for program details. Substitutions If a registered participant is unable to attend, you may send a substitution from the same facility at no additional charge. Advanced written notice of a substitution is required at least 24 hours prior to the event. Substitutions may be requested by fax ( ) or by ing Ashley Ellis at aellis@ mehca.org or Karen Michaud at kmichaud@mehca.org. Walk-in substitutions will be considered on a case by case basis. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) MHCA has Deemed Status with the Maine Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board. This privilege allows us to offer CEUs to Administrators who attend MHCA programs that meet the criteria. To be eligible for a Certificate of Attendance you must arrive on time, sign in, and remain present for the entire workshop. Partial CEUs can only be offered if, upon exiting the event, the participant notifies MHCA s onsite representative, and adds the early exit time to the sign in sheet, so that a certificate with the appropriate number of CEUs can be issued. 4

6 Program Policies & General Information (continued): Certificate of Attendance A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to all those who meet the requirements outlined in the previous paragraph. Currently, unless you registered for the program on site, certificates are available at the close of the program. For onsite registrants, certificates will be sent to the you provided a day or two after the event. Canceled Programs MHCA reserves the right to cancel a program due to limited enrollment or for other extenuating circumstances. If a program is canceled, registrants will be notified in advance by telephone or , and a full credit or refund will be granted to prepaid registrations. Inclement Weather MHCA has a system in place to monitor the weather beginning a few days prior to an event. If we know ahead of time that changes are expected, a notice will be sent to the you provided the day before the event. If you don t have access to your , feel free to contact MHCA ( ) after 6:00 AM on the day of the program. If the event is postponed (or the start time delayed) our office voic message will be updated to reflect that. Otherwise, you can expect the program to go forward as planned. MHCA will make every effort to reschedule cancelled workshops in a timely fashion. If we are unable to do that, a full credit or refund will be granted to all prepaid participants. If inclement weather prompts a delayed start time or an early dismissal, the presenter will collaborate with MHCA to adjust the schedule accordingly and CEU credit will be offered within the appropriate guidelines. Enrollment Caps MHCA reserves the right to limit the number of participants allowed for certain workshops. When enrollment is limited, registrations will be accepted based on a first come/first served basis with paid registrations having priority placement in the program. Refunds All cancellations must be submitted in writing either by fax ( ) or by ing Ashley Ellis at aellis@mehca.org or Karen Michaud at kmichaud@mehca.org. A full credit or refund will be granted as long as written notice of cancellation is received at least 10 days in advance. For cancellations received 1 to 9 days prior to the event, a partial credit or refund will be issued, after deducting a late withdrawal fee of $50 (for full day programs) or $25 (for half day programs). For cancellations received the day of the program (or no shows), no credit or refund will be granted. 5
