2 COURSE OVERVIEW AND TARGET AUDIENCE This conference is designed for cardiologists, primary care physicians, advanced nurse practitioners, and nurses who have a special interest in cardiology. It will focus on practical and clinical issues faced on a daily basis by the health care professional. There will be a combination of case presentations and didactic lectures, which will be used to provide an academically sound and clinically relevant cardiology review. Presentations will be provided by nationally recognized experts in their fields. The guest faculty will be joined by members from The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The program will include live clinical case presentations throughout the day as well as real time echocardiography performed on multiple patients. Additionally, there will be a detailed discussion of each case. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to: Review the expanding indication for transaortic valve replacement surgery (TAVR) Discuss use of cardiac pacemakers including the leadless device Review the newer medications used for heart failure Explain the appropriate cardiac screening options for athletes Review the acceptable hemoglobin level recommended for patients with cardiac disease Discuss the appropriate treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm: endovascular vs surgery Describe the current management of hyperlipidemia including the use of PCSK9 inhibitors Manage stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation: drugs and left atrial closure devices Review the current approach to patients with carotid artery disease Discuss surgical options in severe secondary mitral valve regurgitation Review the wearable cardioverter-defibrillator and its role in preventing sudden cardiac death Assess the ways of reducing cardiac complications in patients undergoing major non cardiac surgery Review potential cardiac deleterious effects of long-term endurance exercise Discuss the modern treatments of acute pulmonary embolism HOSTING ORGANIZATIONS Cardiology Philadelphia 2016: Innovations in Cardiovascular Care is hosted by the Philadelphia Heart Institute of and the Heart Institute of Southern New Jersey. 3 DESIGNATION OF CREDIT Physicians: The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses: The program will award 7.5 contact hours. AAPA: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Category I credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 Credits from organization accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Certificates and Transcripts: A few days prior to the symposium, pre-registered participants will receive an containing directions, additional symposium information and a link to the symposium pre-test, a short questionnaire that will be used to gauge participant knowledge. After the symposium has concluded, all participants will receive a follow-up containing a link to the post-test, symposium evaluation and credit request.
