1 Module Specification Module Summary Information 1 Module Title Principles of Anaesthetic Care Level 6 2 Module Credits 20 3 Module Level 6 4 Module Code LBR Module Overview This module is aimed at post-registration healthcare professionals that wish to build upon prior knowledge, skills and experience that have been acquired in practice previously and develop your knowledge of anaesthetic care. It will enable you as a health care practitioner to develop your role, skills and management of anaesthetic care to a level capable of delivering care to patients with complex needs that may be undergoing elective, non-scheduled or emergency procedures. This module will relate to all other level 6 modules within the perioperative pathway programme in order gain transferable knowledge. This will enable you to identify and justify how your role impacts upon the safe and effective care of patients within all aspects of the perioperative environment. The module will focus on the assessment, application and evaluation of care delivery for complex and diverse patient groups including clinical emergencies and the deteriorating patient. This will include the interpretation of a range of clinical data, recognition of the patient s needs, planning of a care intervention and reflection on how this care may influence the patient s overall condition to ensure a safe and effective outcome for the patient using the best available evidence. This will allow you to develop competency within the technical and non-technical skills required to work as an anaesthetic practitioner under the supervision of a registered practitioner and further develop the relationships that you have formed in multidisciplinary teams within the anaesthetic setting to ensure the safety of the patient within a clinical practice setting. This module aligns with the Professional Practice Programme philosophy and is designed to be flexible and practice-led. You will have the opportunity to develop skills of enquiry, reflection and problem solving. A blended learning approach is taken (incorporating both classroom and online activities via Moodle) in line with the university s learning and teaching strategy. You will be encouraged to think critically and share practice experiences with your fellow students, as well as engaging in both directed and self-directed learning activities. You will be an active partner in your own learning and development and in return you will receive regular feedback and feedforward aimed at developing your academic skills, and have the opportunity to discuss your progress with the module team and practice mentor.

2 6 Indicative Content Day 1 Session 1- Module launch and introduction to the module: Module structure Assignment launch Assignment brief & summative assessment Competency assessment document 1 hour lecture Day 1 Session 2- Introduction to anaesthetics What is an anaesthetic? Overview of general anaesthetic, regional, local and sedation. What is a balanced anaesthesia? The depth, stages and Triad of anaesthesia. 2 hour Lecture Day 1 Session 3- The anaesthetic machine Structure and function of the anaesthetic machine. Checking the anaesthetic machine, identification of components, basic troubleshooting. Medical gases, cylinders and breathing circuits Introduction to mechanical ventilation 1 hour lecture followed by 2 hours clinical workshop Day 2 Session 4- Monitoring and interpretation of observations-: Application and set up of basic/advanced/invasive monitoring devices. Asepsis for invasive monitoring Cardiac function, H.R., B.P. stroke volume, arrhythmias etc. ECG interpretation 1.5 hour lecture Day 2 Session 5- Intra-venous (IV) fluids and fluid management : Commonly used IV fluids, fluid balance recording. Perfusion and normothermia Blood products and administration Inotropes, vasopressors, hypertensives, etc. Fluid resuscitation Application and set up of IV fluids and equipment, i.e. fluid warmers, burettes, rapid infusion, cell salvage High risk patient groups 1.5 hour lecture Day 2 Session 6- Airway management What is the Mallampati classification? Why do we need to manage an airway? Endotracheal intubation, triple airway manoeuvre, supraglottic airways, oropharyngeal/ nasopharyngeal airways. Rapid sequence and cricoid pressure Difficult airway management 1.5 hours lecture followed by 1.5 hours clinical workshop Day 3 Session 7 - Drug calculations and medicines management: Access safemedicate e-learning for numeracy and drug calculations Medication process and policy 1 hour lecture followed by 4 hours independent e-learning

NEWS) Summary of care including diagnosis and treatment Monitoring, interpretation and investigation Ongoing treatment, including drugs and therapies, nutrition plan, infection status and any agreed limitations of treatment Physical and rehabilitation needs Psychological and emotional needs Specific communication or language needs. 2 hour lecture/ problem based learning.
