3 Bachelor of Science in Nursing Annual Status Report Academic Year The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree graduated its inaugural class of students who entered the program in January 2008 (2007-2) at the conclusion of the Summer term. The program provides the baccalaureate degree graduate with competencies that characterize a professional nurse, including the knowledge, skills, and prerequisites to be eligible to apply for post-baccalaureate certificates and Master of Science (MSN) programs. The program is designed to prepare graduates who can provide and manage the care for individuals and families in both local and global communities and to use creative leadership and advanced knowledge and skills to improve the health as well as promote quality health care in a multi-cultural global environment. Regional and Programmatic Accreditation; The RN BSN degree program was submitted to the National League for Nursing (NLN) accrediting body in January As of August 2009, MDC has received requests from the NLN for additional information, which has been provided. MDC is working with the NLN to finalize the proposal for candidacy Program Demand Demand for the BSN remains strong and viable. As indicated in the chart below, student enrollment for exceeded the initial proposal projections. For Fall 2008, seventy (70) students were enrolled, resulting in an increase of 34 students (+85%) compared to the initial projection of forty (40); for the Spring 2009, forty-six (46) students enrolled, resulting in an increase of 16 students (53.34%) compared to the initial projection of thirty (30). Faculty Hiring: a. During the 2008 academic year, MDC hired one BSN faculty member. b. A hiring freeze is currently in effect at MDC and no new positions have been posted for the BSN program. 2. Equipment/materials purchases: a. During the 2009 academic year, the MDC library expenditure for print and non-print library materials totaled $22, to support the Medical Center Campus BSN degree program. b. Forty-five (45) computers were purchased for the Success Center during the 2009 academic year. Recruitment Activities for BSN Program 1. Open House at the Medical Center Campus, held on January 27 th 2009, hosted one of the largest turnouts ever, with over 1,300 participants visiting our campus and the programs. 2. The Medical Center Campus successfully participated in the Career Pathways Career Expo at the Bank United Center. 3. Two College Health Care Career Conference Days were held this year for more than 15 high school health care academies. 4. Numerous Orientation/Information Sessions were held at each of the campuses. 5. College wide trainings on Electronic IEP s and the BSN program were conducted. Twelve (12) College wide program information sessions were provided, and meetings with Chairs of Natural Science and Social Science (SLS) and Advisement Services were held to ensure proper preparation of potential graduates. 6. Information sessions in area hospitals provided awareness of the program to the RN s working at the hospitals. Program Features The BSN degree combines rigorous academic training with hands-on and practical experience. The program currently offers courses on a part-time basis to accommodate the majority of the students who are working full time in their various nursing careers.

4 Bachelor of Science in Nursing Annual Status Report for Academic Year Page 2 Students admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program have had the option to be enrolled in face to face and online courses. The courses, in which they enrolled, have required the fostering of theoretical and psychomotor skills as the associate degree nurse modifies and adapts to the enhancement of the professional skills at the baccalaureate level. Academic Accomplishments The academic accomplishments of the BSN have focused primarily on preparing a curriculum that reflects not only the trends and global perspectives of nursing but also utilizes state-of-the-art technology to support the program. Additional support services were developed to assist the student in balancing full time employment while pursuing the attainment of the baccalaureate degree in Nursing. MDC Medical Center Campus developed and provided additional supportive services via the library and the Student Success Center to assist students with the successful completion of courses. Faculty scheduled office hours before and after classes to provide students with opportunities to address and resolve issues related to course work and course scheduling to ensure compatibility with students work schedules. Presented below are data supporting student success, high retention rates, appropriate grade distribution, and positive student feedback. Student Success Miami Dade College uses many methods to measure Student Success, including pass rates, success quotients, and retention rates. For BSN upper-division courses offered in , the proportion of students who registered for a course and passed the course with a grade of A, B, or C, averages 88.71%. This is a strong indication that the majority of students in BSN upper-division courses are successful. Similarly, students who successfully mastered course objectives and learning outcomes for the four courses offered resulted in a retention rate of 92%. In addition to the retention rates, other success-indicators include a pass rate of 75% and a success quotient of 81% for registered students. BSN Completion Rates Term Number of Courses Number of Student Enrolled Number of Student With Grades of A, B, C BSN Graduates as of Summer Term: 39 students completed all course requirements and graduated Summer Description of Any Barriers or Problems Related to Program Implementation, Delivery, or Program Success The only barrier or problems with the program implementation, delivery, or program success for the BSN program has been the inability to hire additional doctoral prepared faculty to teach in the program. MDC is continuing to work on faculty recruiting strategies to address the problem. Current Data Reporting and Cost Accounting Requirements Data reporting and cost accounting have progressed smoothly, and data are clean and consistent. In addition, the College s Institutional Research Department maintains accurate records on student demographics and performance which are used to enhance workforce development, federal and state reporting requirements, performance based funding, testing and curriculum evaluation, enrollment projections and enrollment monitoring, accountability and outcomes assessment.

Major Accomplishments to Date Major accomplishments to date include: continuation of course progression for the first RN BSN class with a 67.21% retention rate. development of face to face and on-line curriculum for the program. meeting degree program expectations by preparing non-traditional students in the Nursing profession for advancement in career opportunities in Nursing. continued admission of students, exceeding the student headcount projected for each academic year. development of two BSN nursing elective courses. graduation of initial cohort of BSN students (39 students graduated Summer 2009). Conclusion The Miami Dade College School of Nursing has been successful in providing course offerings, student services, and quality education. Enrollment has increased, retention rates are high and the first cohort of RN-BSN students graduated on July 29, 2009.

This is necessary because the report includes final figures for However, at the time we file the Budget with the State, we have not yet finished our year end entries and are unable to give them final data.
