2 BUILDING A BETTER NEW VISION: Expansion works at Angliss Hospital are taking shape. Progress on an expansion project at Angliss Hospital remains on track. Eastern Health Executive Director of Information, Technology and Capital Projects Zoltan Kokai said the expansion would deliver significant improvements to the hospital s clinical environment. Mr Kokai said highlights included the construction of a fourth level above the main hospital building, which would increase the capacity of the hospital s critical care services. The project will deliver a new intensive care unit to enhance critical care services. It will also include an expanded emergency department short stay unit that will provide care for patients who require a stay of up to 24 hours. In addition, the paediatric emergency and short-stay area will also be refurbished. Stage one of the project has now been completed and inpatient services have been relocated to the new fourth level. This will facilitate stage two works, which will include expanded short stay and paediatric facilities on the second level. Upcoming works will also include the partial reinstatement of the courtyard. Eastern Health will collaborate with the Department of Health and Human Services on plans to transition the high-dependency service into an intensive care service. 3 HEALTHY BALANCE FOR MUMS STRONG SUPPORT: Midwives Chris Hoare and Ursula Cook are part of the dedicated Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies team. An Eastern Health service is playing an important role in providing support to Yarra Valley mums and bubs. Ursula Cook is a midwife with the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies program in Healesville and Yarra Junction. The service provides vulnerable pregnant women with support throughout their pregnancy and up to six weeks post-birth. Our main aim is to support the health of mothers and their babies. We assist clients who often have nowhere to turn. They could be struggling with their mental health, drug or alcohol issues, family or financial problems or living in physically and socially isolated circumstances, Ms Cook said. Most women are referred to the service from Box Hill or Angliss Maternity Services, when midwives identify the need for tailored support to ensure the health of mother and baby throughout pregnancy. We are located in Healesville and Yarra Junction but provide an outreach service to support women right across the Yarra Ranges and Upper Yarra area. From Yarra Glen and Coldstream to Warburton we travel to our client s homes and with them to their appointments to provide additional support, Ms Cook said. Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies is just one of the many maternity services available in the Yarra Ranges. Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health provides antenatal clinics for women between 20 and 40 weeks gestation, exercise and education programs for pregnancy and after birth and home visits from a midwife following discharge from hospital. 4 BRILLIANT BABY MILESTONE Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully has welcomed its 100,000th baby, with Taylor Cox from Chirnside Park born at 10.25am on July 31, Taylor s mother, Elise, said she was thrilled to share the hospital s excitement in such a significant milestone. Taylor is Elise s third girl, all born at Angliss Hospital. With 2200 births per year, the hospital is close to the hearts of many in the community. This is a very exciting time for Angliss Hospital, our staff, our patients and the broader community, Angliss Hospital Site Director Paul Leyden said. It is a huge milestone not only for our maternity staff but for those involved in the care of women throughout their pregnancy, birth and postnatal care. Staff from the hospital s maternity service, theatre, medical imaging, pathology and emergency department were involved in the countdown to the 100,000th birth, to highlight their collaboration in providing safe, highquality care for mothers and babies. Women and Children Program Director Philippa Blencowe said many of the hospital s staff were born at Angliss or had their children there. Some staff had also delivered babies of the babies they had delivered many years ago. Eastern Health s Director of Obstetrics, A/Prof Chris Georgiou was instrumental in the lead-up to the milestone, and congratulated the team on its efforts. In 1939, Angliss Hospital opened as a 10-bed bush nursing hospital with one doctor and two midwives. In 2017, our maternity services include a delivery suite, postnatal unit, antenatal clinic, foetal monitoring assessment clinic, special care nursery and paediatric services. 6 NATIONAL AWARD FOR TURNING POINT Turning Point s MAKINGtheLINK program has been recognised at the 2017 National Alcohol and Other Drugs Excellence and Innovation Awards. The school-based program received the prestigious Prevention and Education Award. Adolescence is recognised as a high-risk time for mental health and substance use issues. In seeking help, young people often turn to their friends. MAKINGtheLINK is a school-based intervention program that focuses on teaching students practical skills in how to overcome barriers associated with seeking help, including how to effectively support their peers. This evidence-based program comprises a teacher manual, seven interactive and engaging discussion-based activities for secondary school students, animations on the developing brain and online video modelling how to assist a friend to seek help. It has been successfully delivered in public, Catholic, private and independent high schools across Victoria to thousands of students. Turning Point Director Prof Dan Lubman said the award was due recognition for the outstanding work the team had done. Their innovative work has made a practical, positive difference to the students who have received the intervention. I d like to congratulate everyone involved with MAKINGtheLINK, including the schools and principals who passionately embraced the program. The National Alcohol and Other Drugs Excellence and Innovation Awards acknowledge the work of Australians in the alcohol and other drugs sector. The awards are supported by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and the Australian Government. Their innovative work has made a practical, positive difference to the students who have received the intervention. 7 FITNESS AND FRIENDSHIPS A group of Yarra Ranges locals have found life-long friendships thanks to an exercise class at Warburton/ Millgrove Sports Complex. Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health s strength exercise group is run by physiotherapists to help older adults regain and maintain their health and fitness. This program has been running for about 12 years and while the participants often attend for the exercise, they stay for the social aspect, senior physiotherapist Matoula Wicks said. Community development worker Rose Smits created the program in 2005 after identifying a lack of options for older adults to exercise in the Warburton area. Members of the group receive a fitness program tailored to their needs. This could include laps around the oval, a slow walk or light weights. Margaret Hastings joined the group more than 10 years ago following the completion of a large garden project at her Warburton home. I started because I wanted to maintain the arm muscles I had developed from all the gardening. Since then I have developed a really close group of friends. It s such a welcoming environment with such a range of personalities, she said. Clyde Broughton of Launching Place agreed and said the group often provided the only opportunity for social interaction during the week. Everyone is just lovely and they genuinely care for our welfare. The people who work here are so passionate and caring, and I am so grateful for them and this program. 8 STORYBOARDS OF GENEROSITY A blend of rich history and generosity has been highlighted in a series of storyboards at Box Hill Hospital. GENEROUS EFFORT: Eastern Health Foundation Director Anne Gribbin and Chief Executive David Plunkett thanks community organisation Disha for their valuable contribution. About 80 people attended the unveiling of the storyboards in July revealing 11 remarkable and heart-warming stories. Eastern Health Foundation Director Anne Gribbin said the storyboards showcased the generosity of individuals, businesses, cultural groups and the local community, who had supported Box Hill Hospital over the years. I d encourage everyone to check out these amazing stories and see the difference our donors have made to box Hill Hospital and Eastern Health. The storyboards can be viewed at the entrance to Building B and the Atrium at Box Hill Hospital. Meanwhile, more than 60 staff and supporters have participated in Run Melbourne, raising more than $12,500 for Eastern Health. Ms Gribbin said staff from across the organisation represented Eastern Health on the day, including Angliss, Box Hill and Maroondah hospitals. She said money raised would play an important part in improving patient comfort, treatment and quality of care. It is terrific to see our dedicated staff use their spare time to further enhance our health services. EASTERN HEALTH FOUNDATION Eastern Health Foundation is the fundraising arm of Eastern Health.
