It provides an understanding of the nursing s role in caring for child populations. It also addresses nursing care issues from a physiological, pathophysiological, and psychosocial context. Nurses will be presented up-to-date information that will allow them to think critically, creatively, and compassionately for 1

2 these populations. The course starts with concepts of health promotion and maintenance, and the prevention of illness and accidents. Selected physiological health problems including alteration in respiratory, metabolic, renal, neurological, endocrinology, cardiac and other health problems common to all children are introduced. The content also addresses the psychological health problems that face children including inorganic failure to thrive, child neglect and child abuse. Nursing management relevant to each problem is discussed using the nursing process, developmental theories, new trends and the recent approaches in the management and caring of children. Course Objectives : Upon completion of this course students will be able to: Describe the basic concepts of child nursing including health care delivery, communitybased nursing, critical thinking, ethical decision making, the nursing process, health education, health promotion, and health assessment. Describe the nurse s role in assessment and implementation for the mother and child. Understand the importance of normal child development in the planning of nursing care in these populations. Identify biopsychosocial problem in order to develop recommendation, management and follow-up to help clients to reach optimal level of wellness. Define and describe specific pediatric conditions with emphasis on etiology, clinical manifestations, expected course, treatment, and issues or problems associated with such conditions. Explain the condition, issues or problems of children based on the literature or clinical experiences. Emphasize the physical, psycho-social or behavioral manifestations that are associated with a specific condition or problem. Discuss knowledge and prevention strategies according to developmental characteristics of the child such as accidents, nutrition, immunization, and safety measures. 2

4 Student Evaluation/Grading Policies: Evaluation method First exam Second exam Activities (Quizzes, assignments, case studies, discussion topics) (See schedule table ) Final Exam Total Mark 20% 20% 20% 40% 100% Course Policies Attendance Policy: Absence from lectures and/or tutorials shall not exceed 15%. Students who exceed the 15% limit without a medical or emergency excuse acceptable to and approved by the Dean of the relevant college/faculty shall not be allowed to take the final examination and shall receive a mark of zero for the course. If the excuse is approved by the Dean, the student shall be considered to have withdrawn from the course. Documentation and Academic Honesty Please, submit your homework covered with a sheet containing your name, number, course title and number, and type of the home work (e.g. case study, assignment, and report). Any completed homework must be handed in to my office (room 509/second floor) by 16:00 PM on the due date. If I was not in my office, you can submit the homework to the dean s secretory who will protect them inside my post office. After the deadline, the grade will be decrease one mark every day late. 4

5 Avoiding Plagiarism. 1. Unacknowledged direct copying from the work of another person, or the close paraphrasing of somebody else's work, is called plagiarism and is a serious offence, equated with cheating in examinations. This applies to copying both from other students' work and from published sources such as books, reports or journal articles. 2. Paraphrasing, when the original statement is still identifiable and has no acknowledgement, is plagiarism. A close paraphrase of another person's work must have an acknowledgement to the source. It is not acceptable for you to put together unacknowledged passages from the same or from different sources linking these together with a few words or sentences of your own and changing a few words from the original text: this is regarded as over-dependence on other sources, which is a form of plagiarism. 3. Direct quotations from an earlier piece of your own work, if not attributed, suggest that your work is original, when in fact it is not. The direct copying of one's own writings qualifies as plagiarism if the fact that the work has been or is to be presented elsewhere is not acknowledged. 4. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will always result in imposition of a penalty. In deciding upon the penalty the Department will take into account factors such as the year of study, the extent and proportion of the work that has been plagiarized, and the apparent intent of the student. The penalties that can be imposed range The penalties that can be imposed range from a minimum of a zero mark for the work (without allowing resubmission) through caution to disciplinary measures (such as suspension or expulsion). Implement nursing care related to a child in pain, such as suggesting an alternative therapy. 7. Evaluate outcomes for achievement and effectiveness of care for a child in pain. 8. Integrate knowledge of pain management in children with the interplay of nursing process, the six competencies of QSEN, and Family Nursing to promote quality maternal and child health nursing care. Formulate nursing diagnoses for a child with an infectious disorder. 4. Establish outcomes to help a family manage an infectious disorder as well as manage seamless transitions across differing health care settings. 6. Plan nursing care for a child with an infectious disorder, such as helping them understand infectious precautions. 7. Evaluate expected outcomes for the achievement and effectiveness of care. Assess a child with a disorder of endocrine or metabolic function. 3. Formulate nursing diagnoses for a child with altered endocrine or metabolic function. 4. Establish expected outcomes for a child with endocrine or metabolic dysfunction as well as help parents manage seamless transitions across differing health care settings.
