1 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM COLEMAN COLLEGE FOR HEALTH SCIENCE VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM COURSE SYLLABUS- CRN COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: VNSG 1410 Nursing in Health And Illness III CREDIT HOURS: Four (4) CLASS HOURS: Four (4) LAB HOURS PLACEMENT OF COURSE: NONE Level III PREQUISITES Completion of Level II Courses COREQUISITE: VNSG 1267 Failure of VNSG 1410 will require a repeat of VNSG NOTICE Students who repeat a course more times may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCCS and other Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask your instructor/counselor about opportunities for tutoring/other assistance prior to considering course withdrawal, or if you are not receiving passing grades. COURSE DESCRIPTION: LEARNING OUTCOMES: Continuation of Nursing in Health and Illness II. Further study of common medical-surgical health problems of the client including concepts of mental illness. Incorporates knowledge necessary to make the transition from student to graduate vocational nurse. As outlined in the learning plan, the student will compare and contrast normal physiology of the body systems to pathologic variations in the client with medical-surgical health problems; compare and contrast diagnostic evaluation and treatment; incorporate nutrition, drug therapy, and nursing interventions in developing plans of care to meet the needs of the client. Utilize the nursing process in caring for the client with common medical-surgical health problems. Students will incorporate cumulative knowledge necessary to make the analytical transition from student to graduate nurse.

2 SCAN COMPETENCIES: Scan Workplace Competency Technology Use of Technology And Apply Technology In VNSG 1410 students will use technology and apply technology in preparation, and use of WEBCT and clinical simulations. After that deadline, you will receive a failing grade of F. COURSE OBJECTIVES: PROVIDER OF PATIENT CENTERED CARE: 1. The student shall identify health status and health needs of the clients based upon the data obtained from the assessment and collaboration with other health care professionals as referenced to Provider of Care Competency #1 and SCAN Competencies # The student shall assist in the formulation of goals/outcome and a plan of care through the utilization of collaboration with the client, family, and interdisciplinary team members in the health care setting as referenced to Provider of Care Competency #2 and SCAN Competencies #23-26.

3 COORDINATOR OF CARE: 1. Student will provide direct competent nursing care for clients with neurological, digestive, reproductive and musculoskeletal problems as referenced to Members of a Profession competency #2 and SCAN Competency # The student shall identify and follow lines of authority and accountability within a structured health care setting while providing care to selected clients with neurological, digestive, reproductive and musculoskeletal problems as referenced to Coordinator of Care Competency # MEMBER OF A PROFESSION: PERFORMANCE OBJECTYIVES 1. The student shall demonstrate behaviors that reflect safe clinical practice and take responsibility for their actions during the delivery of nursing care to select clients with neurological, digestive, reproductive and musculoskeletal problems as referenced to Members of a Profession Competency #2 and SCAN Competency # SEE BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Classroom lecture and discussion, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, clinical simulations, handouts, interactive case studies and WEBCT. METHODS AND STANDARDS OF EVALUATION: 1. Four (4) unit examinations - 50 items. One (1) hour will be provided for this exam. Comprehensive Final Exam-100 Items. Two (2) hours will be Provided for this exam. 2. The course grade will be derived as follows: Examinations (4) % Final Examination (1) %

4 100% A MINIMUM COURSE GRADE OF 75% MUST BE ACHIEVED IN ALL VOCATIONAL NURSING COURSES FOR THE STUDENT TO PASS. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. ANY COURSE GRADE BELOW 75% MUST BE REPEATED FOR NURSING CREDIT. FINAL GRADES AND UNIT EXAM GRADES WILL NOT BE ROUNDED. ALL EXAMS ARE ADMINISTERED ON LINE EXAM REVIEWS WILL BE ANNOUNCED. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE ABSENT ON THE SCHEDULED EXAM DAY. IF A STUDENT IS UNABLE TO TAKE THE SCHEDULED EXAM, A GRADE OF 50% WILL BE GIVEN. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS. Students must log off the computer at the end of the exam. Failure to do so will not record a grade in the computer lab system and result in a grade of zero (0). Students must record their grades on the sheet provided in the syllabus. No exam papers or grade sheets will be shown after the review. GRADING SYSTEM A B C* D* Below 60 F ATTENDANCE: Students will be responsible for signing the roll each class day. Failure to sign the roll will result in an absence. Consistent, punctual attendance is essential. Students who are absent more than 12.5% (8hours) of the total instruction from this course will be administratively withdrawn. Tardy/absence is defined as any time not in class at the scheduled time. If you arrive in class after the scheduled time or leave class early, the number of minutes not present will count towards the accumulation of absence hours CONTENT OUTLINE:

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR ANY STUDENTS EXHIBITING UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR ARE SUBJECT TO ADMINISTRATIVE CONSULT/DISMISSAL AS OUTLINED IN THE SYLLABUS AND PROGRAM HANDBOOK 1.If sounds from an electronic device (phones/pagers, etc.) occur, the student will be asked to leave the class or computer lab for the remainder of the class/testing session and absent time will be accumulated. If a dismissal occurs from the computer lab during testing the grade at time of dismissal will be recorded as zero (0). 2. Do not bring books, backpacks, roller carts, purses and electronic devices into computer lab on scheduled test and review dates. One entry into the review is allowed. Students who re-enter exams and/or reviews are subject to rounding of grades. No additional points will be given on any exam. A test question which is deemed controversial will be deleted and the test will be graded on the number of test items remaining after said question is removed. Example; if there are fifty (50) questions and one is deleted, grading will be based on forty nine (49) items instead of 50.
