1 6.26 Supply documentation of all nursing research activities that are ongoing, including internal validation studies, internal and external research, and participation in surveys completed within the past twelve (12) months. As described in Force 6.23, research protocols involving human subjects are approved by the Partners Human Research Committee (PHRC), the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Partners Research Management. Attachment 6.26.a includes nursing protocols that have been submitted to PHRC and their current status. Original research previously approved and completed was showcased during FY 2007 Nurses Week in poster presentations prominently displayed in the hospital. The original research included in the poster presentations are listed in attachment 6.26.b. MGH Nursing participates in a number of national and state benchmarking efforts (see also Force 7.6). At the national level, MGH Nursing submits data to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), reporting quarterly on selected nursing sensitive indicators at the unit level (see also RD 4). The department also participates in annual benchmarking with other QuadraMed WinPFS System. Unit level data on acuity, workload and staffing are reported, together with general hospital data such as number of beds and case mix index. QuadraMed analyzes the data for benchmarking among all participating hospitals. In addition, MGH annually requests reports with benchmarking data from participating academic medical centers with greater than 500 beds. Similar benchmarking is done with the QuadraMed Emerge system for Emergency Departments. On the state level, MGH is one of the original 77 Massachusetts hospitals that joined together in the Patients First initiative, spearheaded by the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) and the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE). Patients First is a quality and safety initiative that provides information to the citizens of Massachusetts through a dedicated web site. Hospitals report staffing plans and actual staffing for inpatient care units, as well as data on selected quality indicators. MGH Nursing also responds to an annual survey from the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives / Massachusetts Hospital Association Survey of Hospital Nurse Staffing Issues in Massachusetts, most recently completed in February, The survey requests aggregate data in ten categories: length of time to fill vacant positions, supplemental staffing and workload management, vacancy and turnover, reasons for voluntary RN departures, union status, severity of shortage by shift, RN recruitment and retention strategies, outreach 337
