2 Appointment Changes To cancel or change your appointment please telephone the number on your appointment card. This may allow us to give your appointment time to another patient. We need your help to run an efficient service. Communication Difficulty or Translation Patient Information is available in Chinese, Punjabi and Urdu. If you have any difficulty with sight, hearing or require a translator please telephone the Outpatient Sister on or telephone the hospital and ask the switchboard to page her. Directions to the Hospital Please see the enclosed Directions to the Hospital leaflet. Ambulance or Ambulance Car If for medical reasons, you require this form of transport: Your first appointment transport shall be arranged by your GP. Transport for future appointments shall be Page 2

3 arranged by hospital staff if it is still necessary for medical reasons. If you no longer require the Ambulance or car please call: for Glasgow Area What to Bring with You Your appointment card. A note of any prescribed drugs presently being taken. Repeat prescription card (if any). Any questions you may have for the doctor. Arrival at the Clinic Please hand your appointment card to the receptionist, who will direct you to the waiting area. If you have not been seen within thirty minutes of your appointment time, a reason for the delay will be given and an indication of when you will be seen by the doctor. Page 3

4 What to Expect The length of consultation can vary. At your first appointment investigations may be carried out so please have no other immediate commitments. Your friend or relative may be present when you see the doctor. You will be seen by a consultant or their representative. If you are required to remove clothing you will be given time to do this in private. If further appointments are necessary your doctor will give you a note to take to the receptionist at your clinic who will make the necessary arrangements for you. Within 7 days, or as soon as test results are known, we will notify your GP regarding the outcome of your visit. You have a right to a second opinion. If you feel this is necessary please ask the consultant in charge of your care. You have a right to access your Healh Records. The Sister or Nurse-in-Charge will be able to advise you of what to do. 5 The Victoria Infirmary Aims to meet the healthcare needs of the community, and Aims to continually enhance the range and quality of services available to patients. As a large teaching hospital we are required to undertake the clinical teaching and training of students in medical, nursing and other professions. Student Teaching You have a right to decide whether or not you wish to participate in student teaching or medical research. You should be asked about this prior to your consultation. No Smoking and No Alcohol The hospital operates a No Smoking and No Alcohol Policy. Fire Safety In the event of the fire alarm ringing the nursing staff will advise you what to do. Page 5

6 Courtesy to Staff Abusive or violent behaviour will not be tolerated and the hospital will consider prosecuting any person whose behaviour is unacceptable. Chaplains To contact one of the Hospital Chaplains, please ask a member of staff to arrange this, or call in at the Chaplaincy Centre - Floor E. Within this centre there is a quiet room which is available for all to use. Comments and Suggestions The Trust welcomes comments and suggestions about any aspect of your attendance at the hospital. Complaints If you wish to complain then a guidance leaflet is available from all clinics. Mobile Phones Please do not use mobile phones - they may cause interference to medical equipment. Page 6

7 Travel Costs All patients travelling from the Highlands and Islands are entitled to claim some or all of their public transport costs of travel. The following only applies to patients in receipt of Family Credit, Income Support or Low Income. Patients on these will be required to bring proof of entitlement e.g payment order book, AG2 certificate, to recover full costs. Bus or rail tickets will be required as evidence. The cost of petrol will be reimbursed for patients using their private car. In some cases the travelling costs of an escort can be claimed. Please ask at the reception desk for further information. Treatment and Health Promotion Leaflets Leaflets are available on treatment, condition specific and Health Promotion within the hospital so please ask the Sister or Nurse-in-charge at the clinic.
