2 General Information Continuing Education Credits: A total of 3.5 CEU credit hours will be applied for through the NC Board of Nursing Home Administrators and through the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation - Adult Care Home Continuing Education Program. An additional 1.5 CEU credit hours is available for Nursing Home Administrators who attend the post-symposium general session. 3.5 CNE Contact Hours - Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants must attend the entire symposium to receive credit. No partial credit is awarded. 5 Education Sessions Descriptions PAIN: THE FIFTH VITAL SIGN Chuck Gokoo, MD, CWS, American Medical Technologies Pain is a common, subjective experience for many older adults. While it may be a factor associated with a number of disease processes, it is a myth that pain is a normal part of aging. The medical staff perception that pain medication may further increase confusion in older adults with dementia or that older adults do not feel pain is a persistent barrier to quality care. The information presented will assist clinicians in understanding the current regulations regarding resident pain and in providing enhanced interventions and outcomes. REDUCING ACUTE CARE READMISSIONS: A QUALITY IMPROVEMENT APPROACH Ellen First, Health Dimensions Group What do you know about readmission penalties, ACOS, and Medicare Shared Savings Programs? THE BREAKING POINT: DEALING WITH COMPASSION FATIGUE Lisa Johnson, Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley It is expected that most clinicians will experience symptoms of compassion fatigue at some point during their professional career. This is a normal reaction. Sometimes compassion fatigue can become so severe that it interferes with the care we provide others as well as caring for ourselves. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and solutions to deal with it personally and professionally.
