CHAIRMAN S REPORT Looking back on the last year, I m very proud of the progress that Koonambil has made towards achieving our Strategic Plan. Of our four focus areas (see page 10 of this report), there is clearly a lot happening now to enhance our structures. It s been more than 20 years since the facility was constructed, so the major renovations and upgrades that are underway are timely. This huge development as part of the continuous facility upgrades will have a great impact for staff and residents. The financial stability that Koonambil enjoys allows us to invest in major improvements which maintain the extremely high standards and best possible working and living environment for staff and residents. Koonambil is always extremently well presented and efficiently run which is a testament to our staff. Koonambil continues to employ experts in their field to ensure our compliance is never compromised and also maintain our own standing as leaders of our industry. The occupation of our independent living units continues to increase and one is utilised especially for short stays by visiting professionals associated with Koonambil. It is crucial that Koonambil remains a part of our wider community to properly represent residents. I encourage all locals to be a part of the Koonambil community. You can participate as a financial member, a Board member, or a volunteer. It s important for the succession of the Board and staff that there continues to be a sense of local ownership, and local commitment to leadership. Finally, I d like to personally thank the Board, CEO Cath Bush and her staff for the wonderful job they continue to do. David Ryan Chairman 1

CEO S REPORT This year, my role as CEO of Koonambil has been as diverse, challenging and rewarding as ever. As the organisation continues to grow and develop, my role flexes to manage current priorities. For the last twelve months, my focus has been on developing our staff base to maintain exceptional care for residents, bringing to life our major infrastructure project, and ensuring ongoing legislative compliance. Quality control will always be a huge priority for Koonambil and has been a focus for me this year as I ensure all our staff are well equipped to do their jobs, and do them well. For my job, this means keeping up with legislative changes, additional human resource management, maintenance of policies and procedures and ensuring all aspects of resident care are outstanding. We have a strong long term vision, and everything we re achieving day-to-day is taking us there in leaps and bounds. I m excited about next year and the future of Koonambil and its community. Cath Bush CEO 3
2018 RENOVATION 23+ years since the facility was constructed Entire facility including all resident rooms, common areas and work spaces to be heated and cooled by fully ducted reverse cycle air conditioner All 30 resident rooms will be connected to the new nurse call system 6 months of building and construction work 5 extra desks in new offices & consulting rooms 1 new purpose built laundry with gas appliances Bigger purpose-built meeting & training room FROM A FAMILY Thank you for all the wonderful care, respect and love shown to my father whilst he was in Koonambil. He became a part of the community and he was so happy to be there. It gave him seven years extra, and that in turn gave me seven more years of Dad. These special words from the family of a resident were written in a letter of thanks to staff. 300% + NURSE CARE Registered nurses play a crucial role in the care of our residents, and in the last year we have been able to further this care greatly through the employment of more registered nurses. In 2018, care provided by a registered nurse has increased by more than 120 hours per fortnight. The availability of a registered nurse provides nursing leadership and clinical supervision to facilitate and manage the health and well-being needs of people living at Koonambil.
SURVEY RESULTS This year, we reviewed the trends in results of our 2018 resident surveys in comparison to surveys from previous years. These surveys assess resident satisfaction with food, and various lifestyle aspects. By benchmarking results from previous years, we can identify areas that we d like to improve, and understand which areas we re excelling in. This is an important part of our commitment to residents. RESIDENT LIFESTYLE Each year, residents are asked 29 questions about their satisfaction with their lifestyle options at Koonambil. Specifically, they re asked for feedback on leisure activities, privacy, dignity, emotional support, choices, decision making, independence and cultural needs. Between 2015 and 2018, residents continue to feel encouraged to participate in decisions about activities and services provided, and increasingly agree that there is an alternative activity if the one on the calendar does not appeal to them. FOOD FEEDBACK For the last two years, residents have consistently recognised the courtesy and friendliness of the staff, overall atmosphere and feel of the dining room, cleanliness of the dining room, quality and variety of the food, present menu, convenience of dining room and meal service times all as excellent. Residents continue to overwhelmingly agree that the staff are helpful in providing assistance or additional food.
CEO S REPORT: CARE This year there have been two main developments which will continue to improve our standards of resident care; the availability of a registered nurse for an additional 120+ hours each fortnight, and building renovations and upgrades. Our registered nurses are responsible for a range of key direct care activities, and are qualified to assess, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate nursing services. They are best placed to collaborate with other health professionals and service providers in the coordination, management and delivery of care for our residents. As part of our renovations, the upgraded nurse call system will be installed in every resident s room, a new heating and cooling system will be installed throughout the entire facility, and there will be a significant increase in the availability of office and consulting space for care staff. As a result, residents privacy and dignity will maintained and their comfort and safety will continue to be ensured. All care programs continue to have an holistic approach. There is a focus on improving residents general wellbeing through exercise while complementing all other aspects of care. Ensuring we are financially able to do that, a staff member has this year undertaken specialised training to help Koonambil maximise government funding. 6
CEO S REPORT: ACTIVITIES Our two dedicated Activities staff hold a Certificate IV in Leisure and Lifestyle. This qualification reflects the role of workers participating in the design, implementation and evaluation of leisure, health activities and programs for residents. Residents are assisted to achieve maximum independence, maintain friendships and participate in the life of the community within and outside Koonambil. The Koonambil bus takes residents to and from recreational activities and provides transport to keep residents connected with the community. Some activities are regular fixtures in the calendar, while others may vary, depending on local current events. In the last year, residents have attended exhibitions at Outback Arts, enjoyed culinary outings at local cafes, taken tours of some of the region s rural roads and participated in a myriad of games and activities on site. Koonambil regularly invests in specific modified equipment so that residents of all abilities can take part in various activities. These activities are tailored to ensure they contribute to our holistic approach to care. This year, we have invested in technology to ensure residents have access to more options. The Coonamble Times is read and viewed weekly on a large Smart TV and interactive program Music for the Mind has been reintroduced. COMPLIANCE Koonambil continues to follow the direction of the Koonambil Strategic Plan This is not only important planning tool, but a demonstration of the strategic vision of our organisation. Our continued focus on growth and development are documented, along with our achievements. We have continued to maintain 100% compliance with Australian Aged Care Quality Agency. Standards assessed include management systems, staffing and organisational development; health and personal care; resident lifestyle; and physical environment and safe systems. We have also maintained out A1 rating with the NSW Food Authority. New aged care standards are to be introduced on 1 July 2019 and Koonambil is already working to ensure compliance. Our facility and staff meet all requirements now and aren t being complacent in the lead up to the introduction of new guidelines; we are seeking education from the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency and our peak body, Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA). Koonambil is also providing leadership in facilitating training for organisations across the wider region which benefits our staff and ultimately, our residents too. 7
CEO S REPORT: STAFF Youth and energy is on our side as we have seen a our staff numbers grow to include more young locals in the last year. This provides great benefit to Koonambil and resists the trend of the aged care industry. These younger staff members and additional registered nurse presence combine to deliver an extremely positive difference in accountability and care. Younger staff allow our more experienced staff time and scope to undertake their own role with excellence, and also provide mentoring, management, support and leadership. This ensures our younger staff are maintaining the best standards for residents while learning invaluable skills. I hope to see this cycle continue at Koonambil for the benefit of our residents and the wider community. Education continues to be a priority for the development of our staff. As CEO, it s important to me that our staff have development opportunities beyond compulsory education. 8
CEO S REPORT: VOLUNTEERS Volunteer experiences provide great benefit to residents and the volunteers themselves. People being able to give back to their community by offering companionship and building relationships is a very powerful thing and we are so fortunate to have a dedicated band of individual volunteers and community groups and organisations who give hours to help brighten someone s day. Volunteers broaden the residents community through selfless acts of kindness sitting and having a chat, sharing a cup of tea, going for a weekly wheelchair walk, an outing to the park, celebrating birthdays, calling bingo or hosting Knit & Knatter. Our volunteers contribute in a variety of group and unique individual activities. We celebrate our volunteers each year by taking them out for lunch with staff and residents. This is our public way of thanking our volunteers for their dedication. I reiterate our gratitude and affection for all our volunteers. 9
VISION To enable ageing residents of Coonamble and district to continue to live near family and friends. MISSION Provide high quality care and services in a range of accommodation settings. VALUES RESPECT COMPASSION HONESTY INTEGRITY 10 10
STRATEGIC INITIATIVES Koonambil is committed to achieving four strategic initiatives by Strengthen our marketplace position: Koonambil will have a clear identity and be widely known and recognised as a quality provider of aged care services in Coonamble and district. Grow our services: Koonambil will continue to logically and sequentially grow its care and accommodation services from care at home to end of life care, becoming the preferred provider in Coonamble and district. Enhance our structures: Koonambil Aged Care Ltd will ensure it has the right legal, governance and organisation structures that supports the board to guide and lead and the managers to manage Develop our people: Koonambil will continue to invest in its people, developing the board, management and staff in an environment of support and accountability 11
FINANCE REPORT The 2018 financial year has resulted in a combined surplus of $748,002 which includes interest of $111,031. Koonambil received a $2,199,107 subsidy from the Department of Health and Ageing, an increase of $191,723 from Koonambil Residential Aged Care delivered a $768,048 surplus while the independent living units of Koonambil Village ended with a $20,046 deficit after depreciation of $73,064. As at 30 June 2018, there is $3,300,000 invested in term deposits plus another $800,000 of RADS/bonds money held. In accordance with the Association s annual statutory reporting requirements, Ryan & Rankmore were again engaged to complete an audit of Koonambil s financial systems and accounts for 2018 period. Please read that report in conjunction with this one. I am pleased to report that all our accounting and administrative systems comply with the applicable accounting regulations and the financial report provides a true and fair account of our financial position. My thanks must go to Cath and Helen for providing the reports and necessary information for every Board meeting and keeping me up to date with the financial activity of Koonambil. They make it easy for me to continue in this position. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors for their support in my role as Treasurer. Dianne Smith Treasurer 12
