1 You made a difference staff awards August 28 August 2014 This month 58 nominations were considered for the You Made a Difference staff award. This award aims to reward and recognise both teams and individual staff members who have 'made a difference' to patients, visitors or colleagues. This month s two nurses were honored. Ana-Marie Sapon Ward Manager F4 Ana-Marie joined the Trust in April 2000 and has worked in various roles as a registered nurse across the Trust and is currently the senior sister on Ward F4. Ana-Marie was nominated eight times, focusing on her leadership skills. Last year she won the Leading by Example award. The winning nomination said: Ana-Marie is an extremely dedicated ward sister. She is kind and caring. She supports and develops her staff, ensuring that they have the appropriate skills to care for such a vulnerable group of patients. Ana-Marie said: I always go by the rule that excellence is not a one-off act it s a habit, so I try to pass this rule onto my team so we provide excellent care to our patients. Page 1
2 Jill Barker Osteoporosis Specialist Nurse Jill joined the Trust 12 years ago and has worked as a practice development nurse with PSSU. She has been an osteoporosis specialist nurse for the last six years. Her role involves working with patients with bone conditions, liaising with GPs and coordinating the care of her patients. Jill was nominated six times, the nomination from the patient said: Jill is very professional, caring and an attentive person. She always listens to any problems I may have and never rushes me, which is so important. Jill said: I am really pleased to win this award, it was really exciting that I was nominated and that people are now aware of the service we provide. Page 2
3 The other nominations for August 2014 were: Mr Amit Agrawal locum consultant breast surgeon for his dedication and care of a patient Dr Tevita Aho consultant urologist for keeping a patient well informed and relaxed about a procedure Ruth Banaszkiewicz health care assistant C5 for being helpful, listening to her patients needs and always smiling Mark Baptiste staff nurse NCCU for completing in a cycle race as a patient was unable to and then giving the certificate to the patient. Alex Booth health care assistant ED for being helpful, smiley and bubbly towards a patient Rory Brankin orthopaedic registrar x 2 nominations for being approachable, cheerful with a good bedside manner and diligent in his assessment. Mary Brennan specialist nurse for going the extra mile and preventing a patient having serious complications Dr Peter Britton consultant breast surgeon for giving his time and explanations for a patient with a life changing diagnosis Denise Coombs receptionist Oncology for making a patient feel special by resolving a problem. Jane Day clinical nurse specialist Dermatology for her care support and compassion to a patient and their family. Tracey Evans health care assistant - D5 PSSU Page 3
4 for her sense of humour, her caring attitude, and for treating patients as individuals Jack Gill staff bank administrator for being helpful with a caring manner and model receptionist. Dr Ellen Gokkel specialist registrar Haematology for giving excellent care, demonstrating compassion and a meticulous attention to detail towards her patients Mr Per Hall - consultant plastic surgeon for being sensitive and honest, with exceptional skills as a person and a surgeon. Sarah Head health care assistant D3 For consistently providing a high standard of nursing care, paying attention to detail, and also ensuring colleagues are well supported. Robert Hill medical records clerk for being helpful, kind and has an excellent way of dealing with staff. Natalie Hoyles - PACS/RIS Support Manager for constantly going above and beyond her role Mercy Kaggwa - community fundraising assistant for always willing to help others and being able to connect with donors. Jeanette Key clinical nurse Orthopaedics for being informative, answering questions clearly and allaying a patients fears Peter Kirkpatrick consultant neurosurgeon for spending time with bereaved relatives in clinic to explain what had happened to their relative Joanne Lee healthcare assistant Ward G6 for making a difference caring for elderly patients on the ward Sandy Liu - patient experience feedback co-ordinator for being kind towards a new member of staff and always surpassing expectations. Catriona McDonald paediatric nutrition nurse specialist for preventing a child developing potentially serious complications Lenette Mackavous staff bank administrator for being polite, helpful and willing to go the extra mile. 5 for giving great encouragement during the early stages of a patients rehabilitation and being positive, caring whilst maintaining his professionalism. Sheena Mendoza staff nurse Ward C8 x 2 nominations for her care and compassion towards a patient and colleagues. Lynda Mills ward manager Day Surgery for supporting a patient that had travelled for an operation and found accommodation locally for the family and their dog. Jennie Morris staff nurse Ward C8 for being friendly and helpful towards her patients. Mary Naylor specialist midwife for supporting and being there for a family at a very distressing time. Alan Norrish consultant orthopaedic surgeon for his warm friendly manner and working hard to achieve positive outcomes. Myrna Padua staff nurse For staying after her shift had ended to support a patient Greg Palin - desk side support engineer for taking over a IT problem a staff member was having and resolving the issues. Jenny Piper health care assistant Oncology for providing a very efficient and timely service. Aimee Pollock health care assistant Ward C8 for assisting a patient and helping with their pain management. Marina Romano health care assistant Ward C8 x 2 nominations for being there for a patient and supporting their needs during difficult times, always having a good sense of humour. Caroline Saward - paediatric cystic fibrosis specialist nurse for always having fun with her patients and answering parents questions clearly. Anna Shasha head of midwifery for being approachable, engaged, kind and excellent. Mohammed Saeed Sheikh staff nurse Ward D8 for being very helpful, positive and giving time to patients when needed. Chloe Wood staff nurse C8 for being a fantastic support to a patient during their admission to hospital. Ian Wray - principal pharmacist for supporting the neonatal unit at a difficult time, which meant that the nutrition of very vulnerable patients was never compromised. Angie Young - diabetes nurse for providing support and guidance during a difficult period for a young patient.
