The warm sunlight, Borchardt remembers, might have contributed more to her mother s healing than most other things. So, when Borchardt hears that 80 percent of patient suites at the new Columbia St. Mary s Hospital Milwaukee will have views of Lake Michigan, be on the cutting edge of technology, attract premier physicians and staff and serve as a national model for health care, she s excited about the care she will get. Columbia St. Mary s patient, Susan Borchardt Watching that sunrise was an amazing experience for both of us, recalled Susan Borchardt, a Columbia St. Mary s patient herself. I think it really helped with both of our attitudes. The next time I am ill and I need to stay in a hospital, if I have a room where I could just lose myself and get away from my worries and pain, Borchardt said, I know that it will add greatly to the healing process. Environment affects positive patient outcomes Current national research shows that a person s environment can significantly affect the healing process. Columbia St. Mary s is taking what we have learned from our national partnerships with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Center for Health Design, and Ascension Health to transform the way health care is delivered. Throughout our health care system, we are fully integrating a healing environment with state-of-the-art technologies to ensure safe, efficient and patient-centered care. The nine-floor hospital will incorporate the latest methods to reduce noise and improve air quality which will enhance patient comfort and safety. The hospital has been designed to feel like home - where patients can control lighting, and family and friends can be comfortable and even assist in meal preparation. Emphasis will be placed on the needs of the patient, not the health care system. For example, patients will have input on their daily schedule, which may mean that they may choose not to be woken at 5 a.m. for routine tests that can be safely administered at a more convenient time. What s unique about this facility is that we have a chance to build it from the ground up, said Leo P. Brideau, President and CEO of Columbia St. Mary s. Our goal is to create an environment where the patient feels comfortable, in control, and where the family stays actively involved as partners in the patient s care. This new hospital affirms our commitment to future generations and will be a hallmark for exceptional health care in this region. Linda T. Mellowes, Chair of the Board of Directors Commitment to southeastern Wisconsin From the moment architectural designs were on paper for the Columbia St. Mary s building projects, the patients best interests were always at the forefront, said Linda T. Mellowes, Chair of the Board of Directors. All of this is to better serve our patients, she said. We are assuring them that we will be able to sustain and grow our mission for decades to come. Our patients deserve that kind of compassionate, high-quality, cost-effective care. Mellowes added that a primary goal of Columbia St. Mary s is to reduce the overall cost of health care. Combining two, aging hospitals into the innovative replacement hospital will save the health system $19 million in operating costs each year, which will more than offset the cost of building the new hospital. The building project will also positively impact the local economy and contribute to the exciting revitalization that is currently taking place throughout downtown and the east side. Columbia St. Mary s has already proven its commitment to provide compassionate care for our communities by employing more than 5,000 staff to care for more than 87,000 Milwaukee residents each year, said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. 4 Stroke Centers Provide Immediate Care At Columbia St. Mary s, we pride ourselves on having a Passion for Patient Care, and the new national certification will elevate the quality of care we can provide for our stroke patients. Mary H. Williams was at the dinner table when she started to stumble over her words. Suddenly, she could barely speak. She was having a stroke. I just noticed my speech was a little different and my daughter couldn t understand me, said Williams, who is in her early 90s and lives in the Milwaukee area. To further stroke education and to raise funds for the Stroke Center at Columbia St. Mary s Hospital Ozaukee, the Columbia St. Mary s Foundation will sponsor a gala on Saturday, October 7, at the Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon. Williams was rushed to Columbia St. Mary s Hospital Milwaukee, where she was treated in a matter of minutes. I remember I was treated very well, Williams said. They got to me right away. I think it is so important to be treated immediately. Stroke is serious. It happens fast. And because of how stroke impacts a person s health, it is essential that people get help right away. To ensure that the best practice standards are in place to provide rapid treatment for stroke patients, Columbia St. Mary s Stroke Centers at three of its hospitals are currently pursuing certification by the Joint Commission of Accreditation for Hospital Organizations to be designated as primary stroke centers. 5 Ozaukee Hospital Meets Growing Needs of Community When Gary Lange was driving back from Minneapolis with his wife this spring, he knew something wasn t right. After coughing for days and feeling his chest throb each time the car hit a bump in the road, he went to a Twin Cities hospital for care. The 51-year-old Cedarburg man had pneumonia. After a short stay in the hospital, he was back home and in his doctor s office at the Columbia St. Mary s Hospital Ozaukee. The pneumonia had spread from his lungs, and Lange was looking at surgery and a nine-day hospital stay. No one likes to be in a hospital, Lange said, but I was pretty happy at Columbia St. Mary s Ozaukee in the sense that everybody was really helpful. No one likes to wake the patient at 5 a.m. to take blood, but the people who did it were great. They were patient with me, and even the guy I ordered food from really got to know me. Soon, more people will experience Columbia St. Mary s Hospital Ozaukee after the $85 million expansion project is completed in When the expansion opens, the hospital will have a total of 185 beds, a new second inpatient wing and additional medical offices. New programs will also expand the range of care the hospital offers. For example, the hospital s new full-service cardiovascular program continues to meet the heart care needs of the community since the program opened last fall. Later this summer, the hospital s Stroke Center is expected to receive national certification as a recognized designated stroke center. Those services and others will ensure that the residents of Ozaukee County and surrounding communities receive comprehensive health care. Lange, who is still recovering from his illness, says he looks forward to visiting the expanded hospital. He is comforted by having a growing and leading health care system close to home. The people who helped me are going to make this hospital the best, he said. I know my family and I will always be treated well there.
