4 Agenda wednesday May 13, :30 7:00 pm Pre-registration thursday May 14, :00 am 8:00 am Registration/continental breakfast/exhibits 8:00 am 9:00 am Keynote address: Carl Hammerschlag, MD Healthcare at the Crossroads: Sustaining our Healing Spirit 9:15 am 10:15 am The Joint Commission s New Scoring System: How it will change your future surveys Dean Samet, CHSP Safety professionals have their hands full in 2009 with The Joint Commission s overhaul of the physical environment requirements. Not only have the environment of care, life safety, and emergency management standards been broken out into separate chapters in the accreditation manual, but surveyors are also using a brand new scoring model that centers on the criticality of deficiencies. 10:15 am 10:30 am Break/exhibits Learn how criticality-based scoring impacts the physical environment standards and what it means for surveys in 2009 and beyond. You ll also get a brief introduction to a new alternative to The Joint Commission s accreditation program, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO), which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently approved for accrediting hospitals. 10:30 am 11:30 am Better Ways to Integrate Emergency Operations Planning with Your Community Joseph Cappiello The Joint Commission and the Federal National Incident Management System (NIMS) mandate cooperative relationships between hospitals and community authorities when it comes to disaster plans. Local organizations must play a role in a healthcare facility s emergency management efforts. Learn about strategies that have proven successful in getting community agencies more involved with disaster preparation at the hospital level and how those strategies fit into emergency management compliance. 11:30 am 12:30 pm Life safety Drawings: The backbone of rated wall maintenance Brad Keyes, CHSP A good set of life safety drawings sets the foundation for tracking compliance with rated walls. Safety professionals first need to know the locations of these walls in order to effectively maintain them. While you probably realize not all rated walls are the same, did you know that not all two-hour, fire-rated walls have the same purpose? Also, in some cases smoke walls must just limit the passage of smoke, while in other situations, they may also be fire-rated. Explore the fundamental differences between fire-rated walls and smoke-rated walls and the need to effectively document these walls on your fire protection drawings. 12:30 pm 2:00 pm Lunch (on your own) 2:00 pm 3:00 pm Answering Your Concerns: Q&A with our experts Joseph Cappiello; Brad Keyes, CHSP; Steven MacArthur; Marge McFarlane CHSP, MS(Risk Control), MS(ENPH), MT(ASCP); and Dean Samet, CHSP In what is always a lively session, we ll open the floor to our attendees to ask about any topic that interests or worries them. Our presenters will be in the hot seat as they take your questions. Audience members will have the opportunity to discuss points directly with the speakers or submit their queries earlier in the day. 3:00 pm 3:30 pm Break/exhibits 3:30 pm 5:00 pm Exclusive Panel Discussion On the Options for Healthcare Accreditation This special session features executives from The Joint Commission, DNV Healthcare Inc., and the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program. Speakers will include Ann Scott Blouin, PhD, RN, executive vice president in the Division of Accreditation and Certification Operations at The Joint Commission; Patrick Horine, executive vice president of Accreditation Services at DNV Healthcare Inc.; Rebecca Wise, chief operating officer at DNV Healthcare Inc.; and George A. Reuther, chief operation officer at the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program. Each organization will have 15 minutes to present, followed by 45 minutes of Q&A. Join us for what will undoubtedly be an interesting discussion on how all three organizations are changing accreditation in healthcare. 5:00 pm 6:00 pm Networking reception/exhibits 6:00 pm Adjourn Register by March 13 and SAVE! 5 Agenda friday May 15, :00 am 8:00 am Continental breakfast/exhibits Register by March 13 and save! 8:00 am 9:00 am New Ideas to Educate Workers in the Challenging Regulatory Environment Marge McFarlane, CHSP, MS(Risk Control), MS(ENPH), MT(ASCP) Many safety professionals know firsthand how limited their time is for safety education during new employee orientation and annual refresher sessions. There are additional ways to achieve staff education goals while also complying with myriad regulatory requirements in this regard. Learn new techniques to better train employees about safety concerns, including ways to further engage busy workers. 9:00 am 10:00 am From Online to the Front Line: Critical topics from Mac s Safety Space blog Steven MacArthur Steven MacArthur s popular Mac s Safety Space blog ( tackles all things safety. His informative, fun posts run the gamut from risk assessments, to Joint Commission tidbits, to OSHA compliance. In this unique session, Mac will further explain and dig into blog topics that have received many hits from readers or that he has found to be nagging concerns for safety professionals. Actual posts and comments from the blog will appear in front of the audience, straight from the Web. Don t be surprised to see discussions during this session go live on the blog. 10:00 am 10:15 am Break/exhibits 10:15 am 11:15 am Meeting the Challenges to Life Safety Compliance Brad Keyes, CHSP The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies mandate that hospitals maintain their facilities in accordance with the 2000 edition of the Life Safety Code. Surveyors and inspectors are finding that those responsible for life safety compliance don t always perform effective evaluations of their facilities, even though they think they do. A basic understanding of the Life Safety Code is a must, but effectively evaluating a facility for compliance can be a challenging task. This session will discuss strategies to meet the challenges to life safety compliance through different methods of evaluation, the process of documenting life safety deficiencies, and the alternative approach to compliance through equivalencies. 11:15 am 12:15 pm Strengthen the Links Between HICS, NIMS, and The Joint Commission Requirements Joseph Cappiello and Marge McFarlane, CHSP, MS(Risk Control), MS(ENPH), MT(ASCP) Emergency planners in hospitals must stay familiar with The Joint Commission s emergency management standards, NIMS, and possibly the Incident Command System (HICS). 12:15 pm Adjourn Close out the Safety Center Symposium by learning sensible strategies to meet the mandates of all three sources, including where overlap compliance exists among NIMS, HICS, and The Joint Commission.
