3 Caring Together Changes How MA Cares The Department of Children and Families and the Department of Mental Health Join Procurement also referred to as Caring Together was established by The Executive Office of Health and Human Services to develop joint service standards program specifications and management structures for these agencies. The goal of Caring Together is to create a more sound efficient system of residential care for youth. This new system of care allows these agencies to provide a larger scope of services and ensures all children and families of The Commonwealth receive the highest level of treatment and support. All providers from both state agencies were invited to respond to the RFR and apply for new contracts that were tailored to the needs of both DCF and DMH. CFP relished the opportunity to display the agency s exceptional ability in providing community based care. CFP applied for several Caring Together contracts that utilized existing programs as a foundation for the new treatment models. In the summer of 2013 CFP was met with the great news of being awarded Caring Together contracts for Group Home 1:4 and Independent Living. These contracts were the result of the commitment and effort CFP s Administrative Team displayed throughout the application process. The management of medication and a youth s medical care became one of the significant changes being implemented into the new residential models. The Caring Together models adopted the Medication Administration Program (MAP) as well as added a Registered Nurse to staff responsible for overseeing and completing MAP certifications and providing support for each site. Upon receiving the contracts CFP hired an RN in July of During mid-summer of 2013 the Nurse and CFP administrators began the development of training guidelines hiring policies and program protocols for MAP by late Aug 2013 CFP initiated the first stages of MAP certification process including application of the MAP license as well as the start of training for all residential staff. CFP continues to work to meet all the state s requirements knowing it will ultimately enhance our programs and services. Clean-Up in the Community with the STARR Program In June of 2013 the STARR Program started an Annual Community Clean-Up day. The mission of the Boston STARR program community clean-up day is to engage the youth and teach them the importance of participating in their local communities. The youth participate in a clean-up effort in various neighborhoods throughout the Codman Square community. Cleaning efforts included litter and trash removal leaf raking snow removal and general yard upkeep. Last year our efforts included two vacant lots located on Athelwold Street. Youth were excited to be contributing members of their community. It is important to the STARR program to instill a sense of community in the youth we serve by getting involved. Helping the development of the community not only affects their immediate environment but also the environment of generations to come. This also helps the youth learn that every little bit helps and that they can make a difference.

6 Integrated Counseling Services in TAP JRI-Integrated Clinical Services in Warwick RI provides outpatient dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) treatment for individuals who experience emotional cognitive and behavioral regulation challenges. In 2012 CFP Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP) and ICS partnered to address the intensive clinical needs of the youth living at the CFP Transitional Apartment Program (TAP) in RI. This collaboration included the youths attending DBT individual therapy and skills group. ICS also works with the team on multiple levels to help create safe environments that promote growth and the development of these young adults. The ICS staff became integrated with the CFP staff with the combined goal of making TAP a superior community-based program. The project officially began in January of 2013 and has resulted in many improvements and client success stories. There have been reductions in the days that youth are spending in the hospital and AWOL as compared to the data from before ICS was involved. Additionally positive discharge outcomes have significantly improved. More youth are going home and/or to independent living situations than before. We are not where we want to be yet but are on our way. CFP and ICS are in this together and working tirelessly to improve the quality of services at TAP and in turn the lives of these at-risk youth. Marching to the Tune of Foster Care CFP Staff with a sand art table for kids to enjoy at the parade. CFP s Intensive Foster Care (IFC) program in Massachusetts is very active in community events in an effort to recruit foster families in communities where foster homes are needed. In May of 2013 the IFC staff along with other CFP staff participated in the annual Apple Blossom Parade in Westford MA. Staff and kids from the programs helped to decorate the van which was used in the parade. Staff walked the route alongside the van sharing information about the IFC program. After the parade there was a festival with various fun activities for family and kids to participate in. CFP was able to set up a table and offer kids a chance to create sand art. The whole day was filled with families fun and laughter. Overall the event was a great opportunity to generate awareness share information recruit families and above all get involved with the community.
