2 Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice: February 17-22, 2008 Grand Hyatt Kauai, Hawaii UPDATE ON INPATIENT AND OUTPATIENT INFECTIOUS DISEASES OVERVIEW Presented by the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the University of California, School of Medicine, this course reviews clinically relevant topics in infectious diseases which are chosen because they are of interest to the practicing clinician or because there have been significant recent advances in diagnosis or treatment. TARGET AUDIENCE The course is designed to meet the needs of a variety of clinicians, including primary care physicians, family physicians, general practitioners, hospitalists, internists, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, clinical pharmacists, and other health professionals who are involved with infectious diseases in the inpatient or outpatient settings. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES To provide attendees completing the course with an experience relevant to primary care and hospitalist practice including didactic lectures, case discussions, and interactive sessions with the faculty that will provide them knowledge and information to enhance their ability to: Diagnose, manage, and treat common infections encountered in clinical practice such as skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, hepatitis, and infections of the central nervous systems. Recognize the manifestations and be familiar with the management of less common infections, such as endocarditis, infections associated with travel, emerging infections, and community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. Treat HIV-related infectious diseases and sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes simplex virus, human papilloma virus, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Be familiar with newer vaccines and antimicrobial agents, their efficacy and appropriate usage for prevention and treatment of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Understand the basis of newer diagnostic tests used in infectious diseases and how to interpret the results. ACCREDITATION The University of California, School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency. For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA category 1 credit for the PRA for organizations accredited by the ACCME.
