1 King Khalid University Nursing Department Fundamentals of Nursing 2 Course Syllabus Course Title: Fundamentals of Nursing 2 Course Number: NURS 211 Credit Hours: 6(3+3) Actual Credit Hours: 12(3+9) Prerequisite: --- Concurrent Placement: Fourth Level Course Description: This course aims at providing the students with the basic principles and various concepts of nursing profession. It includes theories of wellness and illness, and often physiological, psychological, emotional, and social concepts necessary to the delivery of holistic nursing care through the utilization of nursing process. Students will be introduced to the concepts of protection, prevention and promotion of clients to reach an optimal level of health throughout the lifespan. Ethical and legal situations in nursing practice, research, communication, as well as needs for personal growth and self-awareness will be also included. The practice of this course covers basic nursing procedures, recording and reporting using actual hospital documented sheets. Course Objectives At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify elements of comprehensive health assessment through accurate information gathering process. 2. Determine the basic nursing care components in clinical settings with consideration of hazard prevention and safety promotion measures. 3. Identify the physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects (human responses) as essential parts of holistic nursing care. 1

2 4. Utilize the nursing process throughout the application of clinical nursing procedures. 5. Apply the elements of caring and comforting in dealing with patients. 6. Apply the elements of effective communication in dealing with patients. 7. Utilize effectively the infection control measures. 8. Perform safe and comprehensive basic nursing procedures in the lab. And hospital. 9. Follow the proper way of documentation needed by each procedure. 10. Encourage self-directed and independent learning through the utilization of the proper learning materials (CDs, video tapes etc). Course Contents and outline Integral Components of Client Care: Six links in the chair of infection and the measures that break each link. Active and passive immunity with signs of localized and systemic infection. Aseptic practices. o Hand washing o Donning and removing a facemask, gown, disposable gloves. o Managing equipment used for isolation clients. Aspects of planning care to maintain skin integrity and promote wound healing. Routes of medication administration (oral and topical medications). Essential parts of medication order and the abbreviations commonly used. The essential of supporting hygiene for skin, feet, nails, mouth, hair, eyes, ears, and nose and related nursing diagnosis. Promoting Psychosocial Health Components of self-concept and affecting factors. Components of physiologic sexual health and influencing factors. Concept of stress; models and indicators. Coping; loss and grief; dying and death. Promoting Physiological Health Factors affecting normal movement and the effects of immobility. Normal sleep patterns, requirements, factors affecting sleep, and common sleep disorders. Pain: physiology, types, theories, and management. Energy balance and standard for healthy diet. Nutritional Reference guide and altered nutrition. Fecal elimination: physiology, affecting factors, and common problems. 1

3 Urinary elimination: physiology, affecting factors, and altered urine elimination. Oxygenation: physiology, affecting factors, and altered function of respiratory and cardiovascular. Fluid, electrolyte, and acid base balance: physiology, affecting factors, and altered functions. Hospital training about Aseptic techniques o Medical hand washing o Surgical hand washing o Establishing and maintaining a sterile field and isolation technique o Donning and removing sterile gloves (open method). o Donning and removing sterile gown and sterile gloves (closed method). Hospital training about maintaining body mechanism and Safety o Using a bed or chair exit safety-monitoring device. o Applying restraints. o Range of motions Hospital training about bed making o Occupied bed making o Unoccupied bed making o Surgical bed making Hospital training about body positions o Fowler & Semi Fowler's position o Trendlenburge position o Dorsal recumbent position o Horizontal recumbent position o Lethotomy position o Sim's position o Prone position o Knee-chest position Hospital training about hygiene o Bathing and dressing patient o Providing perineal care o Feet and nails care o Mouth care for dependent patient. o Mouth care for independent patient. o Shaving. o Hair shampooing o Back rub and massage Hospital training about activity and exercises o Moving a client up in bed o Turning a client to lateral or prone position in bed. o Moving a client to a sitting position on the edge of the bed. o Transferring a client between a bed and chair. o Transferring a client between a bed and stretcher. 3

Hospital training about elimination o Offering and removing bed-pan and urinal o Administering an enema o Intake & output charting o Collecting specimen o Catheter care Hospital training about eating and drinking (Nutrition) o Feeding the patient o Inserting and removing NGT o Irrigating NGT o Gastric gavage o Gastric lavage Hospital training about oxygenation 4
