1 ADVISING REMINDERS 1. Relax! Allow ample time for appointments. 2. Check student s program and advisor in Datatel (SASM). 3. Pull student s folder with educational plan. If it is a new student, start an educational plan and make a folder later. 4. Use class schedule form or registration form to plan schedule. 5. Check academic credits in Datatel (STAC). STRONGLY ENCOURAGE student to take developmental, ACA, and CIS classes first. Even though a class is listed, they may not have received credit for it. Check carefully! If there is a question about noncourse credit, check test scores in Datatel (TSUM). 6. Check catalog for prerequisites and corequisites. Do not depend on Datatel alerts. They can be misleading. 7. Check nursing criteria. Prerequisites Courses for points (A or B) Science classes time out after 5 years. 8. Check graduation requirements using educational plan. 9. After registration, recheck folders. Everyone is accountable in the registration process!!!!!

7 Revised 6/13/11 BLADEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ASSOCIATE DEGREE & PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAMS ADMISSION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Bladen Community College subscribes to an open door admission policy. However, due to the complexity of health care, legal responsibilities of nursing practice, and required academic standards, there are selective admission criteria for the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and Practical Nursing Education (PNE) programs. The ADN and PNE programs adhere to the college policy of providing nondiscriminatory, inclusive access for all qualified students who meet these selective admission criteria. Students are admitted to the programs in the fall semester. Student applications will be processed only after all requirements have been met. All requirements must be completed prior to the application deadline in order to be considered for admission in the fall semester. The Vice President of Student Services and staff are responsible for administering all admission policies. The nursing applicant is responsible to ensure that all requirements are met by the established deadline of May 18, Guidelines, policies, and deadlines apply equally to all students; thus, there can be no exception. All applicants to the Associate Degree and Practical Nursing Programs must complete the following: 1. Nursing Packet - Obtain nursing admission packet from a counselor in the Student Services Department, the Nursing Department Secretary (located in the Health Education Building), or a high school guidance counselor. 2. Application- Complete general college application requirements in the Office of Student Services. Please complete the nursing application on the day of your scheduled entrance test, the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). 3. COMPASS Test Complete the COMPASS, the college placement test. If the following cut scores are not met, the applicant must take the recommended sequence of developmental courses before taking the entrance test (TEAS). Reading 81 Writing 70 Pre-Algebra 47 Algebra 46 SAT scores of 475 (or higher) for verbal/critical reading and 475 (or higher) for math will be accepted in lieu of the COMPASS Test. See COMPASS Test schedule for other possible exemptions. 4. Program Counseling - Immediately following the COMPASS test, applicant will be counseled by a member of the Student Services Counseling Staff. 2

9 Revised 6/13/11 *Students must score a minimum of 58 on the TEAS Test to be eligible for admission. Applicants will follow the directions listed separately in this packet to register and take the TEAS. Dates for testing are scheduled through the office of Student Services. The TEAS is paid for online, with a debit or credit card, the day of the test. See Tommy Rains, the BCC Testing Coordinator, (Building 2, Room 118) for scheduling and information on study aids. ACCEPTANCE TO THE PROGRAMS 1. Notification Letters: Acceptance letters, letters to alternates, and letters to those not accepted to the programs will be sent by June 15, In the event that any student selected declines acceptance or fails to register during the designated registration period, alternates will be granted admission based upon their rank and the number of positions available. 2. Orientation - Prior to the fall semester, students accepted to the ADN and PNE Programs must attend a two-day orientation seminar at BCC in August. Handbooks, policies and procedures, uniform and supply information, and other pertinent data will be discussed. Information regarding this orientation will be attached to the acceptance letter. 3. CPR and Health Evaluation Form- Verification of Adult/Child CPR and a completed medical evaluation, with immunization records must be submitted to the nursing secretary by September 21, State approved medical evaluation forms are available in the office of Student Services, located in Building Criminal Background Check and Drug Testing- Be advised that most clinical agencies now require background checks and drug testing before a student may enter their facility. Clinical agencies reserve the right to deny any student access to a facility based on their criminal background or a positive drug test. If access is denied to the clinical facility, the student will be unable to complete the requirements of the nursing program, which will result in immediate dismissal from the program. 4

10 Revised 6/13/11 APPLICATION REVIEW AND SCORING PROCESS The point system was developed as an objective means for evaluating Associate Degree and Practical Nursing candidates. Applicants are ranked based on a formula that assigns numerical values to specific criteria. Acceptance into the ADN and PNE programs will be based upon the highest cumulative scores on the TEAS Test. In addition to the TEAS score, points are awarded for the following: Any degree obtained (One year allied health degree, two year or four year degree) Any Allied Health Certificate ( Phlebotomy, NA II, Surgical Tech, Med Aide, EMT) Additional points are also awarded for a grade of B or better for the completion of the following related courses. Science courses (i.e. BIO) completed prior to June 15, 2007 will not be considered in the scoring or evaluation process. Additional points for both the ADN and PNE programs: BIO 168 Anatomy & Physiology I BIO 169 Anatomy & Physiology II CIS 113 Computer Basics or CIS 110 Intro To Computers ENG 111 Expository Writing ENG 114 Professional Research and Reporting HUM 115 Critical Thinking MAT 101 Applied Mathematics I OST 141 Medical Terminology I OST 142 Medical Terminology II PSY 110 Life Span Development PSY 150 General Psychology PSY 241 Developmental Psychology Points are calculated and maintained in the Office of Student Services. A waiting list is not maintained from year to year; therefore, interested students must re-apply each year if not accepted in the nursing programs. Any questions regarding Readmission or Transfer in the nursing programs should be directed to Mrs. Hinson, Dean of Allied Health, ( ). Mrs. Hinson s office is located in Room 102 of the Health Education Building. 5
