Takrouri Achievements 7 Dr. Meg Chiavaras Joan Vardy The Back Page 8 Dear All, April was again a busy month with the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Radiologists, which saw a growing attendance this year, with more than 450 registered participants. There were many excellent lectures at the concurrent sessions, a lot of fine research projects presented by residents from all over the country and many good posters. On that note, it would be nice to see more participation from McMaster, and I think that it would be easy to submit some of the projects presented at our Research Day. We should plan for next year. This was also the opportunity to network with colleagues and listen to concerns and worries expressed by many, and reflected in the annual address from Jamie Fraser, the current CAR President. No need to remind you that there is a lot of pressure on radiology. We will probably see major changes in the coming years, to address issues of quality and accountability, (we don t want to see radiologists on the front page anymore, unless for good reasons), tight job market for our young radiologists, as well as the looming commoditization that everyone is talking about. At the meeting of the Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology departments group, we have decided to step up to the plate, and take a more active role in providing guidance and recommendations on critical issues pertaining mainly to education and research, but also clinical problems. We are restructuring the group, and I have had the privilege of being elected president of this group for the next 2 years - an exciting mandate. I have also been asked to chair a new CAR workgroup called Sign Posts. Their mandate is to advise the CAR executive on the future of radiology and build realistic scenarios that will help us adapt more effectively to current and coming pressures. I would appreciate your feedback and encourage you to bring issues you would like to see addressed, as this may be a unique opportunity to get our voices heard at a higher level. I have the pleasure of welcoming our new staff at MUMC: Dr. Mu taz Alnassar and Dr. Heba Takrouri. Both come to us from Sick Kids, Toronto, where they acquired additional training in pediatric radiology: Dr. Alnassar - mainly in general radiology and neuroradiology Dr. Takrouri - MSK radiology They are a long awaited complement to our new and growing pediatric radiology group at MUMC. We are pleased to report that Dr. Meg Chiavaras has been approved for funding of her 2012 Research Seed Grant application from the Foundation s Board of Trustees, RSNA. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement Dr. Chiavaras. Further details on page 7. All the best, Dr. David Koff Chief of Diagnostic Imaging, HHS Chair, Dept. of Radiology, FHS 1 1

7 OUR ACHIEVEMENTS STAFF : Caring & Involved Congratulations to Dr. Meg Chiavaras on receiving approved funding for her 2012 Research Seed Grant application from the Foundation s Board of Trustees, RSNA. Dr. Chiavaras title for her research is Impact of Platelet Rich Plasma OVer Alternative Therapies in Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis (IMPROVE): A multicenter, Randomized Trial Comparing Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Versus Autologous Whole Blood Versus Tenotomy on Pain and Quality of Life in Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis. Dr. Meg Chiavaras NURSING EXCELLENCE AWARD Joan has contributed 30 years of dedicated service at HHS albeit having worked for several years in the private healthcare sector; returning to MUMC in Diagnostic Imaging. Within Diagnostic Imaging, nurses provide a critical role in the care, assessment, management and education of patients undergoing both diagnostic and minimally invasive procedures. DI nurses implement the standards of nursing to ensure that all patients in DI receive exemplary patient-family centric care in a safe and quality environment. Joan was nominated by her Manager Betty Ng. Joan is an excellent Diagnostic Imaging nurse as she advocates for her patients, comforts them and makes sure they receive the best care while in the department. Joan's nursing skills really shine during difficult procedures as she is ready for anything. Though nursing in Diagnostic Imaging is not mainstream nursing, it is an area that requires talented, experienced and caring nurses, and Joan is one that should be recognized as such. To that end, Joan is recognized as a passionate advocate for her patients, their families and the nursing profession. With a caring heart she provides exemplary care and enthusiastically shares her knowledge and innovative ideas. She is a respected colleague and leader. Joan, we thank you for your leadership and contributions to those in our community who we are privileged to serve. Congratulations from your friends and colleagues in Diagnostic Imaging. 8 Victoria Day May 24 th The history behind this Canadian holiday The Back Page Victoria Day, celebrated on the third Monday in May, marks the official start of summer for many Canadians. Fireworks, generally illegal in Canada, are used to celebrate both the current monarch of Canada and Queen Victoria, a tradition that can be traced back to settlers in then Upper Canada, saluting the queen in Who was Queen Victoria? Why was she important to Canada? Why is she still celebrated? Alexandrina Victoria was born in London, England on May 24, She took the throne in 1837 and ruled for almost 64 years, the longest ruling monarch in British history. She is the great, great grandmother of the current British queen, Elizabeth II. Victoria oversaw a period in history, when Britain became a great world power and the creation of the British Empire. Victoria married her cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840 and they had nine children, many of whom married into other European royal families. Albert died of typhoid fever in 1861 at the age of 42. Victoria went into a deep period of mourning, retreating from public life and wearing black for the remainder of her life. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1901 at the age of 81. Victoria was the subject of seven assassination attempts and is known as Britain s first modern queen, turning over power to the government and intervening less in the political process. Under Victoria, the British royal family became more symbolic, rather than a political force. For Canadians, she is the queen that started Canada on its road to independence. She gave permission to four British provinces in North America, to form a Confederation in 1867, creating the Dominion of Canada. This established a federal government in Canada with a House of Commons, a Senate and a justice system. The documents approved by Victoria remained in use until Canada ratified its own constitution in Queen Victoria s birthday is still celebrated in Canada, although few Canadians know the basis for the holiday or about the grand women who granted them a nation.
