Winter 2018 Vidalia, GA Just Getting Started It started with the opening of the Women s Pavilion in Featuring extra large labor and delivery suites, hotel-like amenities, an expanded newborn nursery and the latest in infant security, Meadows Health quickly became the go-to place for new parents seeking a level of care and attention that was unprecedented. It was the beginning of a new era for women s health services in the region, but it didn t stop there. Not by a long shot. In fact, you might say we re just getting started. Today, the expansion and enhancement of women s health services in the region continue with the recent addition of a new gynecology center, advanced technologies such as 3D mammography and new, innovative treatments such as prone radiation therapy for those fighting breast cancer. In short, we are proud to offer the full spectrum of women s health services to residents of Vidalia and surrounding communities. So no matter what age or stage of life you re in, we re here for you. 2 We are fortunate to have four OB-GYNs, two GYNs, three nurse practitioners and five anesthesiologists who work together and take calls 24/7. They are always available to come and take care of any emergency, and you can be sure that the physician who is taking care of you whether it s the physician you saw in the office or not has all of your records available to them, and they re going to be able to take care of you at the highest level of care. Dr. Susanna Meredith, M.D., FACOG Labor and Delivery Care The Women s Pavilion takes labor and delivery care to an all-new level. Certified nurses and obstetricians provide support and specialized care to new mothers and babies, while spacious, private suites provide family members with additional room to visit. Rooms feature extra-comfortable beds, private bathrooms with large showers, private closets, flat-panel televisions, full-size sleeper sofas and Wi-Fi. 812 The Women s Pavilion also has a dedicated surgical suite on standby and on-call physicians available 24/7 for emergency C-sections. And that s peace of mind for everyone! Number of babies welcomed into the world at the Women s Pavilion in Newborn Care Our newborn nursery comes equipped with the latest technology and specialized clinical care for babies, including those born with special needs. In-nursery medical procedures and a nesting area for new mothers make nursing and caring for new babies comfortable and convenient. We also offer childbirth classes taught by certified childbirth educators. Lactation counselors and breastfeeding support services are available to new mothers during their hospital stay as well. What s more, the entire Women s Pavilion, including the nursery, is a secured facility featuring its own private entrance and a high-tech security/monitoring system. 4 For Life!

3 Gynecology Care Our experienced group of OB-GYNs and nurse practitioners are experts in the many healthcare needs that span a woman s lifetime. For our patients comfort and convenience, we also offer a separate, dedicated office focused solely on gynecology concerns, as well as onsite lab services and minimally invasive surgical procedures. Services range from the treatment of menstrual disorders to menopause management, reproductive health and issues, contraception, incontinence and other gynecology needs. Laparoscopic Surgery Our highly skilled surgeons use the latest surgical techniques whether it s for pelvic conditions such as endometriosis, hysterectomies or the removal of ovarian cysts and that includes laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery which means physicians need to make only a small incision to operate. As a result, patients often experience faster recovery times and less pain. 4 Cancer Care BREAST, LUNG AND COLORECTAL CANCERS ACCOUNT FOR 52% OF ALL NEW CANCERS AMONG WOMEN IN GEORGIA.* For women diagnosed with breast, gynecological or some other form of cancer, the Tommy and Shirley Strickland Cancer Center offers a wide range of cancer services including both chemotherapy and radiation treatment. And these services can all be found under one roof so patients undergoing treatment can stay close to home. In fact, the center recently added Prone Breast Radiation Therapy a unique form of radiation treatment which involves having the patient lie face down on a specially designed table. Studies have shown that lying in the prone position offers women undergoing this type of therapy many benefits, from minimizing the risk of radiation to surrounding organs and tissues to less pain and soreness. The Latest in Mammography Getting a mammogram can be anything but a pleasant experience. But a new technology known as the Senographe Pristina TM Mammography System, now available at Meadows Health, offers not only a more comfortable experience but a more accurate screening as well. Comfortable arm and headrests provide support to those undergoing screenings which enables patients to relax their muscles and achieve a more ideal position for images. What s more, while 2D mammograms create two-dimensional images of the breast, 3D takes multiple images which create a clearer, multi-layered image. This enables technicians to see more of the breast tissue, making it easier to detect the presence of breast cancer or abnormalities, gauge the size of masses and find cancer earlier. For these reasons, 3D mammography may be the better choice for women with denser breast tissue. Most insurance plans cover 3D mammography. For those plans that do not, there is a $100 copay. A physician s order is not needed to have a mammogram. A physician is needed, however, to follow up with results. 5 Pediatrics Meadows Health offers a range of pediatric services from routine wellness checkups to sick visits, immunizations, sports physicals and newborn care. For both expecting and new moms, we offer childbirth classes and lactation consulting. Meadows Health welcomes pediatrician Dr. Katrina McClane Leshanski Dr. Leshanski most recently served as an urgent care pediatrician at Nemours Children s Urgent Care, in Melbourne, Florida. She completed her medical education at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Henderson, Nevada, and her residency at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She enjoys knitting, reading and cooking. Dr. Leshanski and her husband Jesse Zainey have two daughters, Elizabeth and Katherine, and a son, Henry. Their Katrina M. Leshanski, D.O. daughter Eleanor passed away earlier this year. Karen McColl, M.D., FACOG Chief Medical Officer & Vice President of Medical Affairs Mother of two glad she chose Meadows Health for delivery of second child When Franchesca Betancourt moved from Orlando, Florida, to Vidalia, Georgia, in 2016, she wanted to make sure there was a hospital in the area that could take care of her growing family. She and her husband, David, were planning to have a second child, so she stopped by Meadows Regional Medical Center one day to take a tour of the labor and delivery department. Franchesca was particularly impressed by the extra large delivery suites with plenty of room for visiting family members, and that the hospital embraced such healthy practices as skin-to-skin contact with the baby right after delivery. Franchesca was glad she stopped by the hospital that day because that visit would be followed with another about a year later when Gabriella Elizabeth Betancourt came into the world weighing just over 7 pounds. And Franchesca couldn t have been more pleased. From the anesthesiologist who carefully explained everything he was doing to the nurses who took care of her, Franchesca said her experience at Meadows was very positive.
