1 American Association of Critical Care Nurses - Northwest Chicago Area Chapter P.O. Box Arlington Heights, IL Website: nwchicagoaacn.org PRESIDENTS MESSAGE We have completed one year and have begun another. The majority of people use this time for reflection. How could you improve from the year before? How can I improve myself? What goals should I set for the New Year? Why did I make the choices that I did? Why didn t I make the other choice? By asking Why we build bridges from our present-day challenges to a better future for healthcare according to Christine Schulman our current national AACN president. This question can pertain to our career, but it can pertain to our everyday life as well. Take a moment to examine the past year. What was important to you? Were there monumental events that changed a path in front of you? I have been examining my own career. What do I want out of my career? I don t want to have a job. To me, a job is a place you go to simply make money. It is a chore. To me, that is different than a career. A career is something that inspires you. It is something that challenges your intellect and enjoyable at the same time. Although there are days that are tough, overall, what you do is part of who you are and what you love to do. I have learned and continue to remind myself that all institutions have their issues. However, what are we willing to tolerate? For me, knowing that I have somehow affected a patient s life is the reward I reap. I love hearing Thank you for taking the time and explaining this to me or the I feel better now that I understand [my condition]. These words of appreciation are what keeps me wanting more. Try to find one or two things that really speak to you and remind you WHY you are a nurse and WHY you do what you do. If your career has become a job, I challenge you to find something that you love. Sometimes getting up to go to work on a daily basis can be a challenge, but it is often easier when you have a place or a position that gives you some joy. Over the holidays, I was watching the Netflix show Master of None. The main character, Dev, played by Aziz Ansari, leaves his daily life as a struggling actor with no attachments in NYC and moves to a small town in Italy to learn how to make pasta. He learns the language, culture and food, in between comedic bits. Now I want to go to Italy and submerse myself in pasta. Anyway, my point is that all our experiences become incorporated into our own lives. Our work experiences can make us better people, or bitter, but that is what makes life worth living. Exploring our surroundings and picking/choosing what makes you the unique person that you are.
2 So for 2018, explore your personal and work life. Gather the courage to be critical about what is right or what is wrong in your life and change for the better. Happy New Year and see you soon, back with our great educational sessions!
