BOX TOLEDO, OHIO From the President's Desk As you read this edition of, I ask you to take a moment to reflect on the value that NONA adds to the present and future generations of nurses in Northwest Ohio. You will learn about nurse colleagues who have been rightly honored for their tremendous contributions to the profession. You will celebrate the success of outstanding students from our area schools of nursing, at the cusp of joining us in this noble calling. You will also find a ballot, on which you will find the names of those who have stepped forward to help lead NONA in the next two years, and those who will represent our district at this fall s biennial Ohio Nurses Association convention. Perhaps you ll find a name missing from our slate of candidates. Like, maybe, yours. We still have multiple opportunities for members who are interested in helping us do the work that makes the difference for NONA. This year we have a unique opportunity for members who might be intrigued at the prospect of being on the Board of Directors but hesitate to commit to two full years. If you are in that boat, note that we have four unexpired director positions available to be filled but only two candidates. Please do consider writing in yourself, or even a fellow member who can attend half a dozen or so meetings in the next twelve months. We also are in great need of members to step forward and be part of our Nominating Committee. This requires even less of a time commitment than the Board of Directors does, as its sole purpose is to recruit candidates for the next election. If you like talking with colleagues (and heaven knows many of us do!), this is a perfect role for you. Please consider writing yourself in before you drop that ballot in the mail. We strive, as always, to represent the entire geographic district of Northwest Ohio. Sometimes, when none of the leaders of NONA hail from a certain area, it s hard for us to recruit candidates from those areas. I know we have plenty of members in the Defiance area, for instance, also in the surrounding counties of Williams, Fulton, and Henry. We will be better able to serve members in this area when we get a member or two on the Board (Continued on p. 5.)

Get Acquainted with NONA Board Member Rhonda Clayton Hello fellow NONA members, my name is Rhonda Clayton, and I have been an RN since July I am a former elementary teacher. I raised four children, and found myself back in school to reach my lifelong goal of becoming a nurse. I ruled out nursing as a career in high school due to life circumstances, but my fascination with the human body never left me, and 25 years later I returned to school to become an RN. I worked in Sterile Processing and then as a Nurse Extern during school to gain experiences in the hospital setting. Following graduation, I accepted my current position as an RN on a neuroscience unit at Mercy St. Vincent s Medical Center. I am also continuing with my education and will be working toward my MS in Nursing Education, which I hope to complete in the next two years. I realized that I can combine my love of teaching and learning with nursing. There are so many paths and specialties in the nursing profession to choose from, and I look forward to the journey. This past year, I have been serving on the NONA Board of Directors as the new graduate member representative from the New Member Initiative. I was active in different organizations during my time at Owens Community College and served as president of our Student Nurses Association group. I am very appreciative to continue active engagement with my new profession as a member of NONA. This participation with NONA has really helped with the transition from being a student to becoming a professional nurse. I highly recommend taking an active role by volunteering to be on the Board of Directors or as part of a committee. This has helped me to keep my focus on nursing as a profession and not just a job. I hope to continue growing as a nurse, not just through my employment, but also through continued education, volunteer experiences, and all of the wonderful nurses that I meet by being a member of NONA.

NONA welcomed Lori Chovanak, who spoke about successful strategies for professional advocacy leading to effective change. Such advocacy involves nurses beyond one-on-one caring for individual patients. Lori quoted the ANA definition of nursing to validate this role as a mission of the professional association and for all professional nurses. "Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations." Members of the professional association take this charge very seriously, making personal sacrifices to maintain membership for the betterment of the health of our population and the welfare of nurses. I d love to have NONA members in and around Fremont, Tiffin, Port Clinton, and Sandusky involved in our leadership. Even if you cannot bring yourself to write your name in for one of our elected positions, know that we have other ways you can help. We seek new members as well for our Finance, Membership, and Program committees. Just contact me or any Board member to find out how you can get involved. As you consider writing in your name on one or two of those blank lines on the ballot, just remember how NONA and the ONA work on behalf of nurses throughout the district and the state. We work with legislators and the executive branch to ensure that the voice of professional nursing is heard in the Statehouse and the Governor s office. We are part of one of the most successful approvers of continuing nursing education in the country. We advocate for workplace safety, we seek protection for nurses in the wild world of social media, and we stand up for patient safety. Leaders of the American Nurses Association, of which we are a part, are fixtures on the industry lists of the most influential people in all of healthcare. All of these good things don t just happen. They require the dedicated work of talented people, often serving as volunteers, making a difference every day. I ask you to please consider joining them, and us, as we build a better NONA for you in the coming year. Take care, and enjoy your summer! Dave, President SAVE THE DATE October 20, 2015 Fall General Assembly The American Nurse: The movie explores some of the biggest issues facing America (aging, war, poverty, prisons) through the work and lives of five nurses: Jason Short with home-bound patients in Appalachia; Tonia Faust with prison inmates providing hospice care; Naomi Cross bringing babies into the world in Labor & Delivery; Sister Stephen running a nursing home where the entire nursing staff comes together to sing for dying residents; and Army veteran Brian McMillion rehabilitating wounded soldiers returning from war. It is an examination of real people that will change how we think about nurses and how we wrestle with the challenges of healing America. Her education and experience prepared her well to begin a practice as the Congregational Nurse at the Sylvania UCC church. Cathy created the position and job description, which continued to evolve over the twentyone years in that position. Cathy served in the Faith Community Health Ministry Program as a Board Member and past president. She assisted group of community leaders to become a formal Board and 501(c)3 non-profit entity serving the Northwest Ohio region. She supported parish nurses and promoted Parish Nursing/Faith Community Nursing (FCN) through education, networking, and fund raising. Cathy further represented Faith Community Nurses with Health Care systems to educate staff about the FCN role throughout the continuum of care by speaking at leadership meetings that included nursing, social work, chaplains, and rehab staff. Cathy has served in many volunteer roles, including: a) Mobile Meals of Toledo, a parent and volunteer with Sylvania Public Schools; Swan Creek Retirement Community Board member, and with Healthy Lucas County. During her role as Congregational Nurse, Cathy mentored nursing students as part of their community health rotation. Cathy advocated with congregational members to navigate the healthcare system in many areas, such as: a) finding a doctor, b) choosing treatments, c) understanding MD specialties, and d) finding help with medication needs. Cathy wrote: "In caring for others, we learn more about caring for ourselves, and relationships are formed, nurturing a culture of health and resulting in a supportive community." Cathy helped parishioners to anticipate and prepare for post-operative needs. She visited members in health care facilities, rehabilitation and their homes. Cathy viewed her role as using a caring presence, with sensitive nurturing of spiritual health. Cathy has served as a coordinator and interpreter of services, exploring persons desired outcomes; shared health-related information; explored the array of options for health care and their consequences for health and decisionmaking. One value in particular that Cathy Hunter exemplifies in her nursing practice is respect for person and upholding others' autonomy in making decisions. Programs have included: a) interactive healthy nutrition program for teens and adults; b) dealing with caregiver concerns of aging and dementia; c) healthy lifestyles and a series of discussions with teens on sexuality and HIV/AIDS. Events she planned for the congregation included annual vaccinations for influenza and pneumonia; blood drives; planning memorial services; CPR classes; and discussions about Advance Directives and end-of-life care. Cathy has also maintained a lending closet of donated assistive devices at the church with regular safety checks. Cathy exemplifies Nursing Excellence in Practice!

7 Page 7 of 11 Golden Lamp Award Jane E. Ransom, PhD, CNS, RN We in the Northwest District have been most fortunate to have Jane Ransom as a member of the professional association since her graduation from her undergraduate BSN program in nursing in 1971 from OSU. She has served as President, member of various committees, editor of the newsletter, and district delegate to many ONA conventions, working with other district delegates to develop our position on issues under discussion. She has also served on many committees with ONA. She brings her positive and enthusiastic approaches to all that she does within the professional nursing organization at the local and state levels (Bernie Butler). As a faculty member of The University of Toledo College of Nursing, Jane initiated the annual college Research Day, now in its 9th year. Jane's organizational and conceptual understanding facilitated the design of a concept-based curriculum change for the undergraduate program based on national recommendations and trends, to begin in fall of One colleague and friend, Cheryl Schriner, identified Jane as a mentor to her during her studies for an advanced nursing degree. She identified that the course on nursing theories, which Jane was teaching, stimulated her ideas about the essence of professional nursing. Molly Scott, immediate Past President of NONA, wrote that Jane has been a constant and steadfast beacon of support and enthusiasm for the nursing profession. She has been a mentor of nursing students for many, many years as faculty at UT. She helps students see beyond the daily tasks that nurses perform when caring for individuals, families and communities. She has always been a critical thinker and not afraid to ask questions or look outside the "norm" or status quo. Molly further stated, "As long as I have been involved in NONA, Jane has been present; supporting and representing nurses from Northwest Ohio. For the past 30-plus years, she has served nearly constantly in some capacity on the NONA board. She is our district historian! At board meetings, she can explain past activities, initiatives and decisions. Beyond her work as an educator, she worked for 18 years at the anonymous HIV testing site at UTMC from its inception in 1985, first as a volunteer and later as a cocoordinator." Kathy Sink, NONA member and faculty colleague, wrote about Jane's teaching excellence. Jane often teaches courses that have abstract concepts that are difficult for students to comprehend and appreciate. However, she consistently strives to challenge students to achieve their maximum potential. Jane brings a positive and enthusiastic approach to help students develop a greater depth to their own nursing philosophies and the meaning of core concepts for practice and research as students grow in their professionalism. Jane has frequently mentored both faculty and students. She willingly shares any information she developed, including class notes and helpful booklets like Write on! - a resource to assist students with using APA formatting. Jane facilitates student learning through use of multiple learning strategies, including the discussion, case studies, and storytelling. Bernie Butler summarized, "It gives me great pleasure to be honoring Jane with the Golden Lamp Award for 2015."

8 Page 8 of 11 Nursing Students Thank NONA Selected by editor to represent unique comments... I would like to take a minute and thank everyone who was involved in allowing me to attend the National Student Nurse Association s (NSNA) Annual Convention in Phoenix Arizona. Without this support, I never would have been able to attend such an event. Thank you! I was able to take part in several breakout sessions, the NCLEX Mini Review that was offered at the conference, and I was fortunate enough to have the honor of being elected as a National Delegate for the House of Delegates to represent both Ohio and Owens Community College at the convention. Harold Kuhbander, Future RN I had the privilege of meeting ANA past president, Becky Patton from Ohio, and the current ANA president, Pam Cipriano. I co-authored UT s resolution, which addressed increasing social justice in the nursing curriculum. Our resolution passed with 88% of the votes. I also submitted an essay on cultural awareness and diversity in nursing, receiving second place. The most inspirational part of convention was the closing ceremony. The speakers of the closing ceremony discussed the ethical dilemmas we will soon face and reflected on the reasons why we chose nursing, our opportunities, and all of the lives we will touch. Jacqueline Gates UT/BG SNA Social Chair Nominations/Elections Chair, Ohio SNA Serving as campaign manager for Amanda Nuckols in her run for national office was such a rewarding experience for me. The opportunities to meet incredible fellow nursing students and nursing leaders is invaluable, We spoke to hundreds of students, prepared speeches, developed campaign strategies and practiced for Q & A. You might be thinking what does this have to do with being a great nurse? If you think about the qualities the ideal and extraordinary nurse possesses, you will find the same skills at work in the campaigns of all of the 2015 NSNA candidates. A nurse who is strongminded, a good speaker, organized, and able to communicate well with others are defining qualities in excellent nurses. How does a nursing student make an impact on their soon-to-be profession, community, and the NSNA? You could yell really loudly at the top of your lungs and hope everyone within earshot decides to listen... instead of them questioning your sanity... or you can write a resolution to present at NSNA or OH SNA convention. -Next column The process was educational and the debate among students inspiring. But overall, the experience of so many students bringing forward healthcare issues that they were passionate about is an incredible event to witness. Resolution: "In support of increased education for at risk populations for sudden unexpected infant death or (SUIDS)" Tyler Heck, Director of Legislation DirectorLegislation@ohiosna.org Our school chapter was eligible for one delegate to the House of Delegates. It was inspiring to see how nursing students are able to be a part of something that has the potential to change laws. On behalf of the Lourdes SNA, we can't thank you enough for your financial donation. This donation allowed us to fund lodging, conference fees, and airline transportation for nine Lourdes students. We are very grateful for this experience and are excite to use this information to be leaders within the nursing profession. Lourdes SNA On behalf of the members of Mu Epsilon Nu, I would like to thank you for your generous donation of $400. We assure you that we will put this donation to good use as we work to Increase diversity in nursing and mentorship at Mercy. Some projects include: Veteran Matters, Tent City, Men in Nursing & Toledo Correctional Institute Annual Health Fair. Aric Hewitt, President, & Roberta Pratt, Advisor Mercy College of Ohio

10 Page 10 of 11 Candidate Information Provided by Candidate Ruth Ankele: I am currently serving on the NONA Board of Directors. After serving one term, I feel that I now have a much better idea as to what the roles and functions are. By serving another term, I believe I can expand my role and serve the board better. CURRENTLY: Assistant Chair, Owens Community College Andra Bell: CURRENTLY: Assistant Professor, Lourdes University College of Nursing Bernadette Butler: I wish to continue to support the management of the profession of nursing. Rhonda Clayton: I have had the privilege of serving on the board for the last year as the New Graduate Member. I hope to continue my participation as a Board Member for the term. I appreciate the opportunity to continue my personal and professional growth through my involvement with NONA as both a member of the NONA BODs and serving as a delegate at the ONA Convention. CURRENTLY: Clinical Nurse II, Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. Karen Hoblet: CURRENTLY: Associate Professor, UT College of Nursing Denise Oancea: I would like to serve on the NONA board in an effort to fully engage in my profession and promote the profession of nursing. It has been a goal of mine for years to become more involved with NONA. However due to my active involvement in NSNA as faculty advisor and pursuing my PhD, I have not had time to make the commitment. I will be retiring this next year and believe that my past experience in other professional organizations, my enthusiasm, commitment to hard work and my passion for nursing are attributes that provide a strong foundation for fulfilling the responsibilities of a NONA board position. I would be honored to serve on the NONA board with my fellow colleagues and professionals in nursing. Jane Ransom: I value the opportunity to represent NONA and network with other nurses across the state of Ohio. Convention is a coming together of nurses who recognize the importance of collective action to promote quality health care and the welfare of nurses. It is very important that NONA participates in the consideration of issues and resolutions that will direct the course of ONA over the next biennium. I hope that we can take a full slate of delegates this year to convention and bring back the enthusiasm that is generated there to meet the needs and interests of nurses in Northwest Ohio. I have served as a delegate most of the conventions since my graduation and have learned to articulate our positions before the House. I would be delighted to introduce those who have not had this chance to the entire experience. CURRENTLY: Associate Professor, UT College of Nursing Jane Schetter: While I feel that there is much to be learned by attending the ONA Convention, I think that I can also contribute to the practice of nursing. Besides having held both staff and leadership positions in a variety of health care organizations, through my current employment as a senior nurse consultant, I have been exposed to many healthcare organizations. I have also blocked the days of the ONA convention on my calendar so that other events are not scheduled and I will be able to attend. CURRENTLY: Senior Nurse Consultant, Joint Commission Resources. Molly Scott: I would be honored to represent NONA at the Ohio ONA Convention. My goal is to make sure our district is represented by as many nurses as possible. CURRENTLY: NP, UT Gardner McMaster Parkinson Center Michelle Shephard: I joined ONA while in graduate school after having learned about the positive benefits of membership in a professional organization. I believe our collective voices can have a positive impact on the nursing profession as well as the patients we care for. As educators, we should set a positive example to our students and demonstrate leadership. I believe this can be accomplished on serving on the Board of Directors for NONA. CURRENTLY: Clinical Coordinator & Instructor, Owens Community College. Katherine Sink: I enjoy keeping up to date with the advocacy for nurses on both the state and federal levels. I would be honored to be one of the representatives from NONA as a delegate to the ONA Convention. CURRENTLY: Nursing Faculty, University of Toledo Susan Stoner: CURRENTLY: Associate Coordinator, Learning Lab, Lourdes University College of Nursing Micki Wheaton: Hello, my name is Micki H. Wheaton, MSN, RN, and I have thought for a long time how interesting it would be to serve on the NONA committee and be part of the evolving process that works collectively to enhance the knowledge, skills and practice of nursing. As an RN with 30 years of nursing practice in the areas of critical care, nursing/patient education, leadership and nursing administration, I look forward to working collectively with the other elected members of the committee to continue to make contributions that result in positive outcomes for all nurses. CURRENTLY: Coordinator, Veteran Health Education VISN 11 Primary Nurse Planner-CE David Yost: I have served as a member of the Board of Directors for the past two years, and as President for the last year. I look forward to additional opportunities to assist NONA in meeting the needs of its members. In particular, I bring the perspective of one who currently works in the increasingly important area of healthcare informatics, as well as being a member of the leadership team of a large healthcare provider organization. In addition, I maintain current involvement in the academic arena by working as an adjunct lecturer in the Master s of Science in Health Informatics program at The University of Findlay. My background, experience, and exposure to key healthcare-related issues will continue to be valuable to the NONA board, its members, and nurses throughout Northwest Ohio.
