3 The nhsl senior medical saff programme Welcome o NHSL Medical Educaion The NHS Lanarkshire Deparmen of Medical Educaion srives o suppor pahways for clinical learning a he highes level for all medics: from suden o senior consulan. The Healh Board has over 330 consulan and over 120 specialy and associae specialis saff. Such saff will be able o access a range of specialy-specific CPD hrough college and specialy associaion evens. However, NHSL believes ha all senior saff should have he opporuniy of aending locally available qualiy raining, in key generic opics or skills ha are applicable o all medical saff. Therefore, we provide addiional developmen for boh new and esablished senior saff. These are specifically designed no o overlap significanly wih oher sources of provision. They are focussed on he needs of he senior group for whom he majoriy of sessions are available exclusively. es on We hope you will enjoy our varied programmes. 4 Organisaional mandaory raining Inducion Senior saff are usually appoined individually. Therefore, group hospial inducion has radiionally been difficul o implemen. However, he NHS Lanarkshire Medical Educaion websies (MEDED and STAR, see page 8), provide access o generic hospial inducion-relaed opics. Deparmenal and sysems inducion is provided on an individual basis by deparmens. Core raining The principles of clinical governance as well as direcives from governmen require ha he following opics are regarded as core raining for all medical saff: equal opporuniies diversiy and disabiliy inerviewing skills fire lecure child proecion domesic abuse blood ransfusion healhcare associaed infecion resusciaion and emergency skills (see separae secion) The Deparmen of Medical Educaion is working wih NHSL medical managemen o find pracical ways of enabling saff o aend and mainain raining in hese. Several are provided online and we are working o exend his (see STAR, page 8). Clinical CPD To suppor saff no able o aend paricular inernal hospial CPD meeings, several evens have been web sreamed and can be viewed via he MEDED web sie. 2 The NHSL Senior Medical Saff Programme: Medical Educaion
5 Senior saff developmen programme The Consulan Inducion and Professional Developmen (CIPD) programme aims o provide specific raining ailored o he needs of new consulan saff, reflecing heir muli-faceed role of uor, eam leader and business manager. Thus i presens sessions on: eaching; rainee appraisal and how o use assessmen ools for clinical supervision effecive complains handling and conflic managemen including he process whereby we migh resolve conflic Symposia Symposia are periodically suppored by NHS Lanarkshire Medical Educaion o provide a locally available, high qualiy CPD even. The focus is usually on he managemen of clinical emergencies or opics ha are paricularly relevan o a variey of specialies. The programme runs in wo phases, each over hree days. These are regarded as par of inducion o NHSL, for consulan saff new o he organisaion, who are encouraged o aend each phase wihin he firs year of aking up heir pos. 6 In addiion o he CIPD programme, a collecion of more in-deph single-focus evens has been provided by NHS Lanarkshire. The providers for each module have been carefully sourced, ofen exernally, from around he UK. We have worked wih hese providers o ensure he programmes are shaped o senior medical needs and evaluae all sessions rigorously. These courses are free o NHSL saff bu are also open o senior medical saff from across Scoland and many receive exernal CPD approval. 7 Resusciaion and emergency skills Resusciaion Council life suppor courses Courses in Basic, Immediae, Advanced and Advanced Trauma Life Suppor for senior saff are available. Medic a he roadside This full-day module aims o equip senior medical saff wih a summary of wha can be done (and wha should no be done) in emergency ou of hospial siuaions. I includes aspecs such as general paien assessmen, basic paediaric resusciaion, general rauma care and iniial managemen of medical emergencies ou of hospial. The focus of he course is on he pracical sessions around which relevan heoreical elemens are also presened. The course faculy includes senior saff from he Emergency Deparmen and paramedics, as well as involving members of he fire brigade in a simulaed RTA seing. However, some may choose o develop his furher and enjoy a specific sessional commimen o medical educaion hrough joining our core faculy of experienced eachers and rainers. 10 General suppor Video conferencing nework Each medical educaion office is equipped wih a VC sysem. These are porable and allow VC links o be used from almos any room in each of he hree hospials. They are primarily used for eaching and raining evens raher han clinical or MDT evens, which are served by he Trus VC nework. In addiion, here are faciliies o record lecures and web-sream evens.
