4 Welcome to Kamran s Ward Level 0, Children s Hospital Kamran s Ward is the home of Paediatric Oncology (cancer) and Haematology (blood disorders) and provides a variety of services. The ward has a day care area where children have any procedure or treatment that does not require an overnight stay. The ward has 8 inpatient beds and there are also facilities for parents to stay overnight. Please advise your nurse on arrival if you have been in contact with anyone with Chickenpox, Measles or Shingles in the last 2 weeks. First visit If this is your first visit to the ward you are probably feeling concerned. It may not yet be clear what your child s diagnosis is. The doctors and nurses will do everything they can to support you and make sure you have the information that you need. We are here to support you and your family page 4
5 What to expect when you arrive 1. Full medical history It is important that we take a full medical history. You may be asked to repeat the reasons for your referral to Kamran s Ward. 2. Investigations This will probably involve blood tests, X-rays or scans. (Note: it may take several days to obtain these results.) 3. Your child s nurse / key worker You will normally meet your child s nurse / key worker on your first visit (unless it is the weekend). Your key worker is the link between you and your child and the rest of the multidisciplinary team. 4. Meet with a Consultant Your consultant is the person who will have the full information about your child s illness. 5. Overnight stay You may be required to stay overnight so please bring with you an overnight bag. There are facilities for you and your child to stay. page 5
6 Things you might like to bring with you Child s Health Record Book (Red Book) if possible Child s favourite toy, game or book Special foods or milk your child might need (powdered milk should be in new, sealed tins). Food / Catering Children will be offered a choice of meals from a menu and snack boxes are also available. Parents will be shown where the café, restaurant and shops are. A small amount of food is stocked on the ward for use by children out of hours. A small kitchen with a microwave and fridge is available for your use. Parking When you arrive, please ask your nurse or the ward clerk for a family car park pass which is free of charge. CLIC Sargent CLIC Sargent social workers are based in the hospital and are available to provide support and help to families.... My consultant in Oxford is... My nurse / key worker is... page 6
