2 To describe the experience of the Board of Directors of a newly established honor society of nursing. To understand the findings of a potential member survey and an expert panel convention. To provide recommendations for future developing honor societies.

5 All respondents would join an honor society to avail of education and continuing education opportunities.

6 Consisted of a collaboration between three institutions in the South/South-West of Ireland: University College Cork Waterford Institute of Technology Institute of Technology Tralee Appointment of a diverse Board of Directors including established members from academia, administration and practice.

7 1 st official meeting held in January 2014 with a Steering Committee Board of Directors officially appointed in February 2015 when official recognition of the honor society was granted from STTI.

8 The panel was convened to: Identify goals and objectives of the society Align society goals and objectives with local health service and academic needs Review governmental policy on nursing and midwifery and establish how forming an honor society would enhance such policy. Review the mission and goals of STTI Obtain more information and clarity from STTI Headquarters staff and Presidents of other Chapters in Europe.

9 Consisted of nurses/midwives working in: Academia (n=8) Clinical Practice (n=5); all of those in clinical practice were in advance leadership positions. Results of the consensus panel led to the proposal of goals and objectives of the society Benefits of developing the honor society were also established.

10 1. Recognize and celebrate clinical and academic achievements of nurses and midwives and undergraduate students of the profession 2. Engage all nurses and midwives in scholarship and translational research 3. Establish links between nurses and midwives working in practice and those working in academia 4. Give nursing and midwifery in Ireland a voice in the global community of nurses.

11 Nursing and Midwifery specific forum, outside of trade union representation, that recognizes and celebrates the scholarship, innovation and achievements of members Increased number of nurses and midwives engaging in postgraduate studies, scholarship and translational research Enhanced collaboration between nurses and midwives across all disciplines and work settings

12 Workforce development by providing opportunities for professional/career development for nurses and midwives Preservation of staff morale, by creating a peer support network Collaboration between those involved in the delivery of services and academics with the skills necessary to conduct research that is coordinated, prioritized and clinically relevant.

13 Increased participation in global nursing issues and forums Greater opportunities for nurses to influence policy development. Provide an internationally revered platform for celebrating and recognizing excellence in clinical practice, leadership and academia for nurses and midwives in Ireland.
