1 Saint Louis University Academic Catalog PUBLIC HEALTH, M.P.H. As the only accredited Catholic, Jesuit school of public health in the nation, Saint Louis University's College for Public and Social Justice is committed to social justice and the Jesuit mission. Graduatelevel public health classes are taught by faculty who are internationally recognized as leaders in public health research and practice, and have diverse research interests. Students pass the Certified Public exam at higher rates than the national average. In 017, 91 percent of students passed the exam on the first try and 100 percent passed on the second attempt, as compared to the national average of 75 to 85 percent. Curriculum Overview The Master of Public, 4-54 credits, trains students to be competent in the five core areas of public health: behavioral science biostatistics epidemiology environmental and occupational health public health administration and policy Students will also choose one or two (joint) concentrations from among eight options, including: Behavioral Science and Education Promote and research healthy living practices to prevent disease and injury. Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness (Online Option Available) Develop preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious diseases, living modified organisms and other potentially harmful biological agents. Biostatistics Biostatisticians apply statistical theory and mathematical principles to research in public health, medicine, pharmacology, biology, environmental science, and other related fields aimed at determining the causes of disease and injuries, and to identifying critical trends within communities. Epidemiologists are "disease detectives." investigates and controls disease and injury patterns in populations. Global Global health addresses the worldwide health needs of people living in developing countries and resource-poor immigrant communities here in the United States. concerns in these populations include infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and STDs, or various chronic diseases related to aging populations, mental illness, war, famine and displacement. Management and Policy The health management and policy concentration blends a core management component with advanced public health training. That, along with an applied-team-based learning experience that draws a diverse group of students from around the country and the world, will equip you for senior leadership roles in a wide range of public, private and not-for-profit organizations committed to improving health care delivery systems, access to health care services, and reducing risks to the public s health. Maternal and Child This concentration focuses on the complex public health problems unique to women, children and their families. With an emphasis on social justice, graduates of SLU s maternal and child health program develop and promote access to improved prenatal care and birth outcomes, particularly in underserved communities where the need is greatest. Public For professionals currently working in public health to enhance their skills in public health practice. Fieldwork and Research Opportunities The M.P.H. program is designed to give students the practical skills needed for any public health career. Students complete an internship after their first year of study to gain practical experience in their chosen career path. Students have interned in a variety of settings. Experienced public health professionals can assist students in finding an internship in St. Louis, nationally or across the globe. Careers SLU s public health graduates are employed at federal, state and local health agencies; consulting firms; consumer advocacy organizations; community-based organizations and health care centers; hospitals; research centers; and universities. Within the first year of graduation, 99 percent* of our graduates are beginning their careers, participating in fellowships or furthering their graduate education. * According to survey responses from the Class of 015. Admission Requirements Applicants should have a bachelor's degree with no less than a.00 grade point average. Test scores are preferably in the 50th percentiles or higher, but there are no minimum cutoffs. Applicants are required to complete an introductory, undergraduate-level microeconomics course before starting the program. Professional experience in a health-related field is highly valued. Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness A bachelor s degree or the equivalent in the physical, chemical or biological sciences, or six credits of college-level courses individually in chemistry, biology and the physical sciences, with an overall grade point average of.00or better in the science courses; however, applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

2 Saint Louis University Academic Catalog Biostatistics A bachelor's degree or the equivalent in a social or biomedical science with coursework that includes Calculus I, either Calculus II or linear algebra, basic coursework in the principles of biology and computer science, and an upper-level or equivalent course in statistics, each with a grade of B or better. A bachelor s degree or the equivalent in a biomedical science, one of the social sciences or a closely-related discipline. Professional experience in a health-related field is highly valued. Review Process All applications are considered on an individual basis with a balanced approach. Scholarships and Financial Aid The College for Public and Social Justice offers several ways to help finance graduate education. Opportunities include a limited number of merit-based scholarships and graduate research assistantships. Awards are made to applicants with the highest combinations of GPAs and test scores who complete their applications by the priority deadlines. Graduates will be able to discuss the means by which structural bias, social inequities and racism undermine health and create challenges to achieving health equity at organizational, community and societal levels. 7. Graduates will be able to assess population needs, assets and capacities that affect communities health. 8. Graduates will be able to apply awareness of cultural values and practices to the design or implementation of public health policies or programs. 9.
