12 Challenges for Orthopaedic Nurses What are our attitudes: towards death and dying? towards patients who have a life-limiting illness? to provide care to the palliative patient?
13 The Challenge Oh that patient is dying; why are we spending the money and wasting our resources and time for this person!
14 The Challenge The attitudes of nurses towards death and dying have a direct impact on the quality of palliative care delivered to terminally ill patients and their families. (Tait et al. 2015)
15 The Challenge As modern technology expands its horizons and abilities to support life, the importance of balancing medical technology with humanistic care to enable individuals to experience a peaceful death becomes increasingly clear. (Petersen, Breakwell & Callahan 2014)
16 The Challenge My expectations: That nurses caring for me would have a positive attitude towards the dying. That nurses are up to date with the latest evidence-based procedures in order to provide the best care. That orthopaedic nurses are willing to continue in education and advanced research into the challenges the world is now facing. That orthopaedic nurses have an open mind to new advances and embrace the new Summit.
