2 A few words from Leonard On behalf of the CHS family, I want to welcome Jim Dale to the board of trustees. Jim begins his first term at our upcoming February board meeting. I would also like to welcome Jodi Thomas as our new board chair. At this time of year, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Vic Blaufuss and the maintenance crew for keeping our sidewalks and driveways as safe as possible during predicted and unpredicted ice and snowstorms. You all do a great job and are sincerely appreciated! I am sure that many of you have seen articles about several rural Kansas hospitals that are struggling financially and operationally. It is very important to remember that the status of rural healthcare also places many other Kansas facilities at just as much risk we just don t see those headlines. This is why I say often and loudly! that giving up local control of your hospital is not a good option. We, as Coffey Health System, are so grateful for the support of the Coffey County Commissioners, the board of trustees, our physicians, all of our staff, and, of course, all of the patients that we serve every day. This wealth of support gives us the ability to have the facilities, equipment, and positive outlook that we have going forward. Speaking of our positive outlook, a huge source of pride for CHS arrived last week. As you see on the cover of this issue, our new 3D mammography unit is here! The radiology team is busy training to take our already-stellar mammography program to the next level. What a blessing this is to our community. Thank you to everyone who has helped with the process. Let s work together and have a great February. Valentine s Day is right around the corner. Don t forget to make the person or people in your life feel extra special that day! Leonard R. The new system was delivered on Feb. 7. Training and inspections occur this week and exams are expected to begin on Feb. 18. The Genius 3D Mammography exam results are more accurate than 2D alone. Genius exams are more accurate than conventional 2D mammograms, detecting 20-65% more invasive breast cancers. The Genius exam also provides greater peace of mind by reducing the chance of unnecessary callbacks. In fact, the Genius exam reduces callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2D. The Genius Exam and Breast Density Dense breast tissue can make it difficult for doctors to detect breast cancer during annual screenings, which is concerning since women with dense breasts are more likely to develop breast cancer. Studies show that the Genius 3D Mammography exam has greater accuracy than 2D mammography for women across a variety of ages and breast densities. It is the only mammogram that is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone. This is good news for patients, as nearly fifty percent of women ages 40 to 74 have dense breasts. How a 3D Mammogram Works Women will see little difference between a conventional 2D mammogram and a 3D mammogram. The exam takes about the same amount of time a 3.7 second scan time - and the positioning is the same. The real difference is in the information available to the doctor. A good analogy for 3D Mammography is like thinking of the pages in a book. If you look down at the cover you cannot see all of the pages but when you open it up, you can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers.

3 ESU places simulation lab at hospital The Coffey Health System Board of Trustees elected Jodi Thomas, Waverly, as chairman during the board s January 28 meeting. Steve Hopkins, New Strawn, is vice chairman; Jo Ann Osburn, Gridley, is treasurer; and Rosemary Rich, Waverly, is secretary. The slate received unanimous approval. Chief Nursing Officer Melissa Hall reported that a renewed partnership with the Emporia State University School of Nursing will result in a simulation lab at Coffey County. The lab will benefit not only ESU nursing students who are training at the hospital, but it will also be available for ongoing staff training. Realizing that in rural healthcare sometimes you have low census (patient volumes) which makes it hard for ESU to assure that their students are getting good clinical hours, so they actually offered to put a simulation lab in our facility, Hall said. We will not only be able to truly do mock codes, but they will also put in a Noel doll which will simulate live birth The other great part is that we will be able to use the lab ourselves, even when students are not here. Chief of Staff John Shell, M.D. elaborated on the importance of working with medical and nursing students. It s really important that we Jodi Thomas Jim Dale participate in these educational programs and have these students coming in because we hire a lot of people from those programs not just nurses, but also nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and even physicians. Shell also reported that Speech Pathologist Jessica Jones is now doing inhouse video swallow screenings. These tests were previously outsourced to a third-party. In the consent agenda, the board approved medical staff reappointments for Advance Practice Registered Nurse Ashley Beying; Cardiologist John Joliff, M.D.; Pathologist Ambreen Khan, M.D.; Tele-Radiologist Earl Maes, M.D.; Urologist J. Jason Robinson, M.D.; and Anesthetist Brian Tackitt, C.R.N.A. The board also approved actions of various boards and individually signed an annual letter accepting governance over Coffey County Home Health Agency. Trustees also completed their annual Conflict of Interest statements. Year-end financials for 2018 registered a small profit of $2,500, a significant turn-around from 2017 s net loss of $1.2 million. December s monthly finances show a net revenue of $1.96 million with expenses at $1.93 million. The 340B pharmacy program continues to build momentum, bringing $569,000 in net revenue over its first seven months. Effective January 1, all U.S. hospitals are required to publicly post their pricing systems. Chief Compliance Officer Stacy Augustyn has been educating hospital staff about price transparency. She reiterated that each patient s charges will vary based on factors including insurance, medication, and length of stay. The CHS webpage offers a phone number to call for help when comparing healthcare costs. 5 On February 9, members of the Coffey County Area Breastfeeding Coalition in collaboration with the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network hosted their second annual community baby shower for expectant and new parents and caregivers. The free event offered parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn about Safe Sleep, SIDS prevention, and choking first aid for infants and toddlers. Other topics covered were period of purple crying, car seat safety, baby blues and post-partum depression, smoking cessation, and breastfeeding. The twenty-one mothers in attendance each went home with a new pack-nplay portable crib and a halo sleep sack for the promotion of safe sleep practices, among other infant care items. Parents and caregivers had the opportunity to visit with representatives from several area organizations that offer services to infants, children and parents. Thesse organizations included: Parents as Teachers, Coffey County MOPS, Coffey County Library, Coffey County Area Breastfeeding Coalition, Coffey County Health Department, Kansas Masonic Literacy Center, Lyon County WIC, Coffey Health System Social Services, Coffey County Obstetrics Department, Coffey Second Annual Community Baby Shower County Nursing, Sunflower Health Plan, and Childcare Licensing. The Coffey County Area Breastfeeding Coalition would like to express their thanks to the generous sponsors who made the event possible: Wolf Creek Security Local #52; Coffey County Museum; Medicine Shoppe of Burlington; Hollee Bea of Kirchner Chiropractic; Rotary Club of Burlington; Julie Augustyn; Tracy Campbell in loving memory of Pacey Marie; Rocktop Cattle Company; Coffey County MOPS; Tupperware with Gennifer Birk, Lulabelle s - Grace Krueger; Janelle Stukey - Juice Plus; Parents as Teachers; Kansas Masonic Literacy Center; Jessica s Reading Corner; Sunflower Health Plan; Sassy Owls; and Coffey County nursing; Obstetrics and marketing Departments. The event was coordinated by a committee consisting of Katie Rich, Tina Withers, Lindsay Payer, Coffey County Health Department; Clarissa Sents, K-State Extension Office; Stacy Augustyn, Michelle McVey, Melissa Hall, Coffey County ; and Bevin Neely, Lyon County WIC. Obstetrics High Five designation renewed Congratulations to obstetrics on their High 5 for Mom & Baby Recognition renewal. Their ongoing commitment to excellence in maternity care as a recognized High 5 hospital reassures parents planning to breastfeed that they will be in the best possible hands and, most importantly, provides moms and babies in our community with numerous health benefits which will last a lifetime. Of the 62 Kansas hospitals and birth centers that made a commitment to the High 5 program, Coffey County is the 36th to officially qualify for the recognition. The process, guided by Obstetrics Supervisor Michelle McVey, R.N., began in February 2016 when the educator for the High 5 program, Libby Rosen, PhD, RN, IBCLC, conducted onsite education classes at the hospital. The High 5 program reaffirms its commitment to support hospital staff through technical assistance and learning opportunities, including webinars and education classes, to ensure skills continue to improve while safeguarding the best outcomes for the moms and babies in each hospital s care. Our obstetrics team is constantly finding ways to improve successful breastfeeding, said Chief Nursing Officer Melissa Hall. Ensuring that our community mothers have the support to be successful at breastfeeding is a vital component of raising our standard of care. 5 Board Continued from 3 Public Relations Society of America. She reviewed highlights of the transition from traditional to digital marketing. Rosemary Rich reported that the Quality, Compliance and Risk Management Committee formally approved the compliance plan. She also highlighted several quality initiatives throughout the organization, including a fall prevention program that has reduced the number of falls, especially in long-term care. Eight trustees attended the meeting; Thomas (via internet), Hopkins, Osburn, Rich, Peter Allegre, Jeff Clark, Judy Reese, and Dennis Young. Vanessa Dauber did not reapply for appointment to the board. The Coffey County Commission appointed Jim Dale, Burlington, to fill Dauber s position. He was sworn in on February 4. The meeting concluded with no executive sessions. The board will meet next on February 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Coffey County conference room.

6 Thoughts and prayers extend to the family, friends, and colleagues of Margaret Baker. Margaret worked as a CNA on night shift since 2009 and was loved by many. She will be missed greatly. Margaret lived her life like there was no tomorrow, always giving her best through good times and sorrow. Remembering Margaret is easy to do, she d fight for her family, and Betty Boop, too. Grandkids were special, she gave them her all. Nieces and nephews too, grown or small. A person of beauty, a big heart of gold, but make her mad and she could be quite bold. Ready for a road trip at the drop of a hat, no matter how far, no matter where at. Easter, Christmas, or Thanksgiving day, every holiday special in her own giving way. Trusted with secrets, honest and kind, a better person than Margaret will be hard to find. Babies and big folks, family or friend, taking in strangers, who soon fit right in. As stubborn as a mule, in her own special way, and if she had a vendetta there was hell to pay. Keep your faith, never give up the fight, that was her motto, that was her light. Enjoy your new adventure to God on the throne, you never were afraid to travel alone. Rest your lead foot now, no need for speed, we ll see you in Heaven when our own souls are free. ~Written by Margaret s oldest sister, Floretta All f r One for one. all. 7 Kudos to you! Kudos Kudos to you! to Kudos you... to you! Kudos to you! Dyane Christiansen, Stacey Buckridge, Jolleen Palmer, and Alberta Andrick deserve a pat on the back for working extra hours in dietary. Toby Paige writes: During the last snow, I was down mopping the floor in the hallway of the clinic. It was first thing of the morning as people were tracking in snow and ice, making the floor wet and slippery. Stephanie Garland asked if I would leave a mop with her and she would keep the floor mopped, decreasing the chances of someone slipping and falling. Thank you, Stephanie, for going above and beyond. We should all try and follow this example. Kudos to Krista Cubit and all the staff at Sunset Manor. As soon as you walk in the door it is evident that Krista and her staff genuinely care for each resident as if they were family. They go above and beyond to get to know their residents and their stories. It is truly a wonderful place. Big thank you to Michelle Rickel for always looking for ways to improve our daily work flow and putting patient care and satisfaction at the top of her list! Michelle McVey is always the positive light in the day. We can always count on her to find the silver lining! She broke her arm and originally went to Wesley in Wichita but said that she will never go back there because of how rough she was treated. She wanted to say thank you and let others know how pleased she is with our service. Stacy Augustyn went the extra mile to get the ECQMs to work in Healthland so that we are able to complete the Meaningful Use attestation. Clean and disinfect areas that may be contaminated. More germs are transferred shaking hands than kissing. I was working at a hospital in housekeeping and the lab was one of my assigned areas. The time spent in that department made me very interested in the work that was going on there. I saw medical technologists as the detectives of the medical field. I wanted to be able to work with the physicians and help them make their patients feel better. When I first started working at CHS, all the techs were cross-trained in several areas including laboratory, radiology, ultrasound, EKG, and even radiology transcription...three part reports on a typewriter!! My mom and dad were my role models. Compassion and loyalty were their main goals when dealing with customers, coworkers, and others. Coffey County has always felt like home to me. I married a hometown boy and we raised our family in Burlington. My friends have become coworkers and my coworkers have become my friends and extended family. This extended family has stood by me and my family through thick and thin, celebrations and tragedies, and through life and death. I came to Coffey County at the age of 21 as a registered and certified medical assistant. I have been a medical technologist since I hope to continue working in the lab until I retire and hang up my tourniquet. Tena Hawkins, Lab Technician Coffey County 8
