1 King Khalid University Nursing Department Pediatric Nursing Course Syllabus Course Title: Pediatric Nursing Course Number: NURS 322 Credit Hours: 6(3+3) Actual Contact Hours: 12(3+9) Pre-requisite : ---- Concurrent : Placement: Sixth Level Course Description: This course is designed to introduce nursing students to the basic knowledge, principles and skills of nursing care of children and their families. The course covers the health needs of healthy as well as sick child, taking into consideration the growth, developmental theories, and its applications to child s health care. The course also deals with the common child s health problems and its management. This course is designed to provide nursing students with the basic skills related to nursing care of healthy as well as sick child and their families. The course takes into consideration the basic principles of child health nursing and how these principles applied to nursing practice. Course Objectives: At the end of the course, each student will be able to: 1. Have background about historical overview of pediatric nursing. 2. Recognize the basic and expanded roles of pediatric nursing. 3. Define concepts of growth and development. 4. Compare between growth and different types of development. 5. Recognize principles and theories of growth and development. 1

2 6. Discuss different factors that affecting growth and development 7. List six stages of childhood growth and development. 8. State milestones and characteristics of child in each stage of growth and development. 9. Compare between growth and development of normal child versus sick child of the same age group. 10. Identify the effect of hospitalization on children and their families and how to deal with stressor of hospitalization. 11. Be acquainted with the basic child s rights and ethical pediatric principles. 12. Identify the most common medical and surgical health problems of children and their nursing care. 13. Apply principles and knowledge of child health nursing into practice. 14. Provide direct, safe, and comfortable and age appropriate nursing care for children / families in different clinical settings. 15. Apply the nursing process to child health nursing practice. 16. Demonstrate communication skills in dealing with children and their families and members of health team. 17. Provide suitable heath education to the child and family pertaining to their health needs and problems. 18. Utilize play therapy in dealing with children, taking into consideration the child s age and his health condition. 19. Develop positive attitude toward self and others. Course Outlines: Introduction to the course: Definitions Purpose and objectives Course organization and plan Historical overview of pediatric nursing Roles and qualities of pediatric nurse New trends in pediatric nursing. Child s growth and development: definitions, characteristics, principles and factors. Growth and development of specific age group, nutrition and care: Newborn and premature Infant and toddler Preschool and school age Adolescent Normal and high-risk neonate (Premature, Neonatal jaundice, hypoglycemia, hypothermia, neonatal sepsis, meconium aspiration syndrome and RDS). Child s right and pediatric nursing ethics. 2

3 Play: definition, purposes, characteristics, types and values. Parent reactions to imperfect child Hospitalization and pain management in children. Nursing care of children with the following health problems: o Acute respiratory tract infections (upper & lower) o Diarrheal diseases and dehydration o Malnutrition o Anemia ( iron deficiency anemia, Thalassemia, sickle cell anemia and G6PDD) and Leukemia o Congenital heart disease and Rheumatic fever. o Glomerulo-nephritis and Nephrotic syndrome o Diabetes mellitus o Hepatitis and Tuberculosis Nursing care of children with surgical disorders: o General pre and post -operative care in children. o Gut congenital anomalies (Hypospadias, Ectopia Vasica..ect) o GIT congenital anomalies (Imperforated anus, Hirshsbrung disease, Intussusceptions, Esophageal Artesia and Tracheoesophageal fistula, Cleft lip and Cleft palate). o Congenital Diaphragmatic hernia o CNS congenital anomalies (Spina bifida, hydrocephalus) o Orthopedic congenital anomalies Lab simulation Post clinical conferences Nursing Rounds In-depth clinical discusses (one to one) (case studies).
