1 Multilateral EVS Project Interactive Citizenship Host Projects in non-eu / non-programme Countries 1. ALALAY EGUINO, Bolivia (hosting 1 volunteer) Alalay Eguino is non-profit organization, dedicated to helping street children in their reintegration into the society. Alalay gives the street children home, board, education, health care, social and psychological assistance. Alalay also helps the children finish school and offers special training for their future. Alalay brings them love and helps the street children find their place in society, give them self-confidence and a sense of responsibility. Some children having been homeless and most are addicted to drugs, so the project also helps them to combat their addiction. The Alalay program has different houses representing the different stages within the reintegration process. The role of volunteer will be to works as an assistant of educator in the project. The project provides an opportunity to learn from the problems of poverty and working with former street children. As challenging as it often is, it does help the volunteer to understand the harshness of the living circumstances of these children and teenagers, and enables them to see what kind of damage it causes to a child to leave his house. The experience in this project will help the volunteer to acquire different social skills and how to accept different cultures and live independently in a new environment. Help take care of the children and teenagers and helping with their homework, sharing the activities and experiences of the children living in the project, preparing workshops on different topics, work on the streets informing children of the project, taking the children to school, hospital, dentist, etc. The project is open to new ideas like painting, music, sports, playing football or whatever skills the volunteer has. Working Hours: The volunteer will work from 8 hours per day. Days off: Saturday and Sunday. Holidays: 20 days (not included weekends). Food: The volunteer will take the meals with the family. Accommodation: The volunteer will live with a host family. Local Transport: Local transport is available from Monday to Sunday. The project is situated 45 minutes to the centre. 2. We Serve Charitable Trust, India (hosting 1 volunteer) We Serve Charitable Trust Supports Modern English school. It is a primary school that has been run for 11 years. We have around 200 children from Kindergarten to 5 th grade. Age groups from 5 to 12 years. This is a private school. We have one principle, four teachers and two caretakers. This school follows the Syllabus of Government of India. All the children are from different villages in the area. Ramasamudhram is a small town and surrounded by many villages. All the children are underprivileged background. This school has got five small classrooms. UKG and LKG sit together out of the school in open place. We Serve Charitable Trust supports education for 30 children whose parents cannot afford their education and lack motivation. This school is situated in a backyard area which lacks facilities. We serve charitable trust recognises the participation of volunteers to help them in day to day activities such as teaching, handicrafts, singing, playing music, organising some special events or activities for the parents and the community that lives around the school. The volunteer will have a main area of work in which s/he will be involved in. Apart from this there are a few tasks in which the volunteer will undertake, e.g. children s reading classes, helping to organize activities for the children on their holidays, helping to serve food at meal times and sometimes just to be flexible and help where needed.
2 Classroom Assistant: This task involves working with our younger children and their teachers and helping with Basic English, Maths, Social Science, General Knowledge, Painting and Drawing classes. We generally have three volunteers for this task, one deals with English, one maths and the other Science classes. The classes are on six days a weeks and generally there are two or three classes a day of 45 minutes each in which the volunteer will be involved. The volunteer will also have to prepare material for the classes and monitor the children s progress. Office Assistant: This can also be very varied work. There are many day to day office tasks, such as helping to prepare schedules. As well as these there are other tasks, such as; preparing presentation of documents for the school, helping to organize functions and outings for the children. Kindergarten Assistant: This task involves helping our staff with our smaller children in the LKG classes. These classes generally involve learning through games and storytelling. These classes only run for a few hours in the morning so volunteers who come for this task will have to be prepared for other duties in the afternoons. All these tasks are on-going tasks. Working Hours: Volunteers will be working from Monday to Friday from 9 AM till 3:30 PM with Lunch break in between. Days off: Saturday they will be working only for half a day and second Saturday will be free day. School will be also closed on all the Government Holidays. Holidays: Volunteers can take two weeks free during their last month of stay in India. Food: All the three meals will be provided by the host family living very close to the volunteers guest house. Accommodation: Volunteers will be staying in the guest house very close to the school and will be sharing with other volunteers. Local Transport: Volunteers guest house is very close to the school. 3. The Association of People with Disability, India (hosting 1 volunteer) The Association of People with Disability (APD) was started over 50 years ago by a group of persons with disability, aiming to empower persons with disabilities to become active contributors to society. APD has various institutional and community based services for providing education, therapy, vocational training and employment services for person with disability from both rural and urban areas belonging to poor socio-economic background as priority. APD considers education a crucial input towards development and inclusion of children with disability into mainstream human activities. Inclusion for them are at three levels --- Physical, Social & Educational. Against the above backdrop, Shradhanjali Integrated School (SIS) was founded in 1973 within the APD campus, Bangalore. This is a recognized primary school from nursery to class VII with a capacity to educate 185 children. Out of these, 80% are disabled students. The balance is not disabled and this ratio is maintained to promote the practice of inclusion. The volunteer at APD will work in its different departments but also at SIS. The school offers a good resource centre and library. Co curricular activities like sports, cultural festivals, and arts and crafts ensure all round development. As most children at SIS come from very poor families, facilities like mid-day meals, books, uniforms, healthcare, transportation and special coaching supplement their academic inputs. Their medical rehabilitation, an integral part of their development, is ensured through regular medical check-ups, physiotherapy and use of mobility aids. The volunteers will support APD s activities in its various departments, predominantly assisting staff and children at the Shradhanjali Integrated School. The volunteers work along with our permanent members of staff so when a volunteer leaves there is never an empty gap. We feel that both permanent Indian members of staff and foreign volunteers contribute in different ways to the project and that neither can replace the other. - Participating in the daily routine programmes and activities. - Assisting in teaching and working with the clients.
3 - Assisting the administration and documentation. - Helping at the camps and activities. - Doing activities and games with students and beneficiaries of SIS and APD. Working Hours: Volunteers will around 6 hours a day from Monday to Friday with Lunch breaks in between. Days off: Saturday they will be working only for half a day and second Saturday will be free day. School will be also closed on all the Government Holidays. Holidays: Volunteers can take two weeks off during their last month of their stay in India. Accommodation: Volunteers will stay at the ICDE-India Guest house sharing the guest house with other volunteers. Local Transport: Volunteers Guest house is very close to the school or they will receive money for transport if a long distance is to be travelled. 4. Panti Wredha Rindang Asih I (nursing homes), Indonesia (hosting 1 volunteer) The Nursing Homes of Rindang Asih (NHRA) is located in Ungaran which is one of the unit services of the Semarang pastoral Soegijapranata Social Foundation, which was established in 1971 dedicated for homeless people in order to support their live. Most of them are elder people above 60 years old and do not have relatives. The role of the volunteer will be assisting local staff to take care of the elderly who live in this home. This role is not replacing the local staff in assisting them, and the volunteer should assist in their daily activities of the staff like cleaning, washing, cooking, etc. It is suggested that the volunteer develop creative ideas in order to develop the creative program in the nursing house. Through this experience the volunteer will gain a lot: Not just the work and assisting the local staff but also being part of the nursing home, adjusting to the local people and local culture. The intercultural learning process of the volunteer can be seen through her/his daily activities and tasks. At the project, the volunteer will have the possibility to use her/his creativity, undertake activities like teaching the elderly English or other creative activities that can build her/his critical awareness of the circumstances at the project. The task of the volunteer at the project is assisting the local staff in their daily activities like cleaning the home, washing clothes, cooking for the elderly and entertaining them to make them happy living there. Actually, there are 3 levels of elderly who live in this home: Type A - they can do everything by themselves; Type B can do only some work at the home; and Type C cannot do anything by themselves and need help with many things. So the task of the volunteer is to assist them in doing their work. The volunteer also has task of helping with the renovating the room of the nursing home by painting the wall of the room, etc. His/her influence on the staff and elderly is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. It is also meant to open the mind of international volunteers that the elderly also need attention from other people. It will also give the volunteer the opportunity to learn about nursing and taking care of older people. Working Hours: The volunteer will have a daily schedule of activities in the nursing home which will be provided by the local staff there. Mostly the volunteers will work between 6-7 hours a day. Days off: The volunteer has day off on Saturday and Sunday. Normally, the working days will be from Monday to Friday. Holidays: The volunteer has holiday based on the foundation holidays. The foundation holidays are Idul fitri and Christmas. Food: As the volunteer will live in a dormitory, food will be served but the volunteers are also very welcome to help the cook to prepare the food. Most of the cooking food will be based on basic local Indonesian cuisine. So the volunteer will eat together with the member of the other staffs and the elderly. Accommodation: The volunteer will live in a dormitory. The food will be provided at nursing home and will have meal together with the other staff members. Local Transport: The volunteer will go to the project site on foot. If the project site is far away from the host family,
4 we will prepare for the transport and give the transport fee to the volunteer. When Dejavato has training or evaluation, Dejavato covers the local transport from the host project to the meeting point.
