Job Summary The Aboriginal Student Community Learning Coordinator is responsible for the implementation and management of Aboriginal Community Learning Experience placements for UBC Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and Audiology (AUDI) Master Students, as well for PhD students requiring aboriginal Community Learning Experiences. The incumbent will be responsible for securing and developing Aboriginal Community Learning Experiences sites within the Province of British Columbia (B.C.) and Canada, recruiting Aboriginal consultants/instructors and guests, policy development, long-term planning, program redesign, and outcome evaluation. The incumbent will design, coordinate and implement curriculum relating to clinical aboriginal education for instructors and students, and coordinate the curriculum with stakeholders. Some duties will be sitespecific and others will involve collaboration with health care professions within the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences (SASS) and the Faculty of Medicine (FoM) or internal or external health care professionals or agencies. The incumbent will also be required to organize and evaluate clinical education activities and performance of students during their Community Learning Experience placements, implementing mediation with the instructor and remediation for the student if needed. This position will be responsible for advising and counseling aboriginal students enrolled in the SLP and AUDI programs and while on Community Learning Experience placement(s). Participates in the orientation, recruitment, and retention of aboriginal students. Advises students and other University departments about careers in SLP and AUDI including employment, occupational trends and career information.
2 Provides expertise and support for School based Aboriginal programming initiatives focused on improving classroom climate; environments conducive for student learning; creating dialogue on Aboriginal culture and society; ensuring Aboriginal student success and expanding program access. Provides the tools for intercultural dialogues and engagement. The incumbent will be experienced in the provision of community placement opportunities to SASS graduate students and may be involved with other University Units in establishing Aboriginal educational healthcare initiatives. This position provides consultation and direction to future SASS clinical faculty and students regarding culturally relevant Aboriginal practices and their communication practices. This position is based at UBC Point Grey Site and will require some travel within B.C. Occasional visits are required to Aboriginal communities and organizations selected as Community Learning Experiences sites primarily located in the Fraser Valley, Northern B.C. and Vancouver Island. The incumbent must be willing and able to travel independently between the sites, be energetic, flexible, self-motivated, and comfortable with ambiguity and change. Organizational Status The incumbent reports to the Course Lead(s) for applicable SASS courses, the School Clinical Education Lead (or equivalent) and the Director. The incumbent liaises closely and frequently with Aboriginal communities and organizations, secondary schools, other post-secondary institutions, and administration at school board & hospital sites, and clinical faulty at clinical practicum sites. Close collaboration with program administrators, managers and directors will be required Work Performed Conducts needs assessment for Aboriginal Community Learning Experiences to support expansion of UBC's SASS Master's programs, including identification of new discipline-specific and inter-professional clinical sites and preceptors in remote/rural Aboriginal Communities. Develops and maintains relationships with Aboriginal communities and organization to facilitate engagement with SASS and FoM and support mentoring relationships and engagement activities with AUDI and SLP students. Works in collaboration with others to develop, implement and maintain an effective SASS Aboriginal strategy for communication with UBC Faculty, Clinical Educators, Students, and Aboriginal communities and organizations linking stakeholders to resources and opportunities both on and off campus. Recruit prospective Aboriginal students to SASS programs through participating in education/career fairs and on campus recruitment, liaison and outreach events for prospective students, aboriginal communities, and high school and college counselors and parents. Proactively providing counseling and advising services to aboriginal and other SASS students to encourage their success and continued success at the University. Develops a long term plan to meet evolving needs of the Aboriginal educational and clinical components of programs. Redesigns existing Aboriginal Community Learning Experiences on the basis of the needs assessment, and develop policies, systems and organizational practices for Community Learning Experiences to meet existing and evolving needs of the educational and clinical components of
3 the Master's programs in SLP and AUDI, as well as the PhD program for students requiring Community Learning Experiences. Develops infrastructure and establishes new Aboriginal Community Learning Experiences for students in the SLP and AUDI programs, as well as new inter-professional clinical education learning opportunities involving students in other UBC health professions to enhance education on collaborative practice within health teams concerning Aboriginal initiatives. This responsibility requires: building effective partnerships; developing leadership in policy development, coordination with the designated sites; recruitment of new clinical instructors and program coordinators; and the identification of barriers and potential solutions to maximize clinical training resources in BC and Canada. Develops pedagogy and facilitates interaction with other units within the UBC Faculty of Medicine, the local Aboriginal community and organizations and designated sites to further the development of expanded Aboriginal Community Learning Experience locations in support of the expansion of the programs. Develops innovative models of clinical education, both discipline-specific and inter-professional, in collaboration with other health professions programs at UBC, and with staff from Health Authorities, School Boards and non-profit organizations, to further the development of Aboriginal Community Learning Experiences attended by UBC students from a variety of health professions. Arranges Aboriginal community visits and assists in managing Community Learning Experiences, including development and delivery of learning activities for Community Learning Experiences in Aboriginal communities and organizations in rural and northern B.C. and maintenance of clinical faculty and site databases. Provides front-line advice and responds to complex questions about communication practices surrounding community visit activities and Aboriginal initiatives in teaching and learning. Responsible for remediation policies and processes concerning student performance during placements, as needed. Communicates effectively with UBC faculty and staff, clinical instructors, program coordinators and other stakeholders. Designs, implements, and coordinates Aboriginal education, orientation, and mentorship programs for clinical preceptors in consultation with other health professions for the provision of clinical supervision to individual students as well as to inter-professional student teams. Monitors student progress during community visits, and reviews outcomes of activities performed by students at Aboriginal community sites with respect to the educational objectives set by School programs; formulates and implements plans for ensuring that the education provided at Aboriginal community sites is of high quality, as required by School programs. Develops and manages site-specific UBC SASS Aboriginal Education events and represents SASS at events. Develops, maintains and documents detailed procedures and operations for each site. Develops a marketing plan to implement redesigned Aboriginal clinical education programs, and develop tools to evaluate the outcome of changes. Works with UBC SLP and AUDI Faculty to coordinate academic and clinical components of the Aboriginal component of post-graduate programs in the School and the development of teaching activities and materials.
4 Assesses and prioritizes Aboriginal student needs for the issuance of financial support and bursaries. Works under general guidance from the SASS Course Leads to meet educational program goals and objectives. Performs other duties related to the position and develops special projects as assigned. Supervision Received Works independently with minimal supervision from the UBC SLP and AUDI Instructors and Education Leads. Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment with other Clinical Coordinators and UBC tenured Faculty. Supervision Given Supervises support staff as required for the clinical placement of students (Senior Clinical Program Assistant) and arranging distribution of program curriculum and teaching/learning modules via distributed education online technology (IT Support). Provides mentor-ship to UBC students and clinical instructors. May also supervise student assistants in the delivery of the programme. Consequence of Error/Judgement This position's main role is to provide dedicated support for the clinical education expansion in Aboriginal communities and organizations and development of Aboriginal culturally safe and relevant courses. Discussions of cross cultural topics and in specific Aboriginal issues, are frequently contentious, and the consequences of difficult discussions have been well documented. This position requires indepth knowledge of issues involved in teaching and Community Learning Experiences, and discussing politically and culturally sensitive materials, in order to develop effective and meaningful approaches for incorporating cross cultural topics in both curriculum development and Aboriginal Community Learning Experiences. Familiarity with necessary communication and consultation processes with Aboriginal faculty, staff and community members is required for moving forward with instructional professional development for incorporating Aboriginal culture and learning. A lack of familiarity with these processes could alienate these groups and discredit the School's programs and negatively impact the ability to move forward with Aboriginal engagement. Due to the complexities and sensitivities of the Health Professions education expansion and distribution, the consequence of error in this position is high. Information provided must be accurate and timely and the incumbent must keep abreast of School and Faculty objectives and educational activities and plans. Errors in judgement could have immediate repercussions for the clinical faculty, learners, and hospital staff on the School's education program delivery. Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Social Work (M.SW.), Science (M.Sc.), or equivalent in Speech Language Pathology (SLP) or Audiology (AUDI), from a University of recognized standing. Minimum of four years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of six years' experience or the equivalent in supervising students in a University setting, advising and counseling aboriginal students, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Strong knowledge in UBC's health science and human service graduate and undergraduate
5 programs, and First Nations programs and resources. Experienced and knowledgeable of Aboriginal health issues and traditional medicine and practices. Prefer work experience in Aboriginal health and health education. Knowledge of Aboriginal cultures and issues preferably within British Columbia. It is preferred the candidate has a valid B.C. drivers' license to visit Community Learning Experience sites and the use of a personal vehicle. Ability to communicate in a clear, attentive, and polite manner and has exceptional interpersonal skills (creative, diplomatic, patient, tactful, acts with discretion). Ability to assist clients and students in identifying appropriate courses of action. Ability to deal with a diversity of educator community members in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to analyze and redesign Aboriginal Community Learning Experience placement processes to make them more efficient and effective. Ability to develop Aboriginal Clinical Education methodologies and techniques. Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in aboriginal client care. Ability to review, analyze, and synthesize complex information into summaries and reports. Ability to gather, record, and organize information.
