2 Safety guidelines for USN students on outbound exchange We want your exchange period to be successful and educational. It is therefore important that your health and safety is taken care of, in addition to the professional quality of the exchange. In this brochure you will get an overview of the precautions you need to take to ensure this. Read the brochure carefully before you go, bring it with you on the trip, and write down other important addresses and telephone numbers of your stay. Also leave a copy of the brochure to your relatives or friends at home, and give them information about the phone numbers that are important. 4 Precautions 1. Follow the Norwegian Foreign Ministry's official travel advice, see 2. Register your stay at the Ministry's travel registration: 3. Keep up to date about the security situation in the area you are in. 4. Follow laws, rules and travel advices for the country you are in. 5. Respect local customs and practices. 6. Hold family and friends informed about where you are. 7. Take the necessary vaccinations and prophylaxis for the area you are going to. 8. Do not travel on exchange sick, be healthy on departure. 9. Use common sense regarding what you eat and drink, and the same applies to alcohol consumption. 10. Use seat belts and select traffic secure alternatives. 11. 5 You can get help! If you have problems when you're on the exchange, it is important that you notify the proper authorities: 1. Your next of kin must be kept informed at all times. 2. The International Office at USN must be informed so that follow-up can be provided. 3. USN has an Norwegian Church Abroad, for our students to contact if support is needed. 4. The Norwegian consulate or embassy can provide you with legal and other assistance. 5. It is important that you have insurance in order. If you are hospitalized, you must notify your insurance company so that they can provide a guarantee for expenses for hospitalization. Also, keep the receipts for all your expenses so that you can apply to have the costs reimbursed by the insurance company later. 6. If you are to be subjected to a criminal act, it is important that you contact the local police and report the crime, if needed with assistance from your host institution. Also report any damage or loss of items and money for your insurance. 7. If you are arrested or suspected of a criminal case, it is important that you contact USN, as well as the nearest consulate or embassy, regarding assistance for review, legal assistance or for a trial. 3/8/2017 Safety guidelines for USN students on outbound exchange 5

6 Emergency response and crisis management If you or other students in your group are prone to accidents, violence, riots, natural disasters or similar, shall follow the procedure described below: Contact the local police, fire and/or ambulance/doctor when needed. Follow advice and instructions from local authorities. Please contact the host institution for advice and help. Contact the nearest Norwegian consulate or embassy for advice on how the situation should be handled. Keep in touch with your academic contact or the International Office at USN. Contact your home to let them know your situation. This also applies if you are not near the incident.
