5 Welcome Affirms Life living every moment is a Specialist Palliative Care Service and the education team offers a wide range of learning opportunities for health professionals, community health workers and groups. Our aim is to provide and promote evidence based knowledge and skills to ensure that quality palliative is accessible across the region to meet the needs of patients/clients and their families/whānau. Education and training is provided in a supportive environment that meets the needs of health workers working across the range of sectors and services providing palliative and end of life care. This includes NZ programmes that have been developed to ensure nationwide consistency in palliative care education. The learning activities and methods we use provide an opportunity for exploratory and collaborative learning and we encourage participation and interaction from course participants. Working in partnership with you: As a specialist palliative care centre we welcome the opportunity to work with our partners in health to assist in building knowledge and competence in end of life care. We will work with you to provide onsite training and support for a range of health workers in all health care settings. 6 Palliative Care Support for Aged Residential Care Palliative Care Support programme for Aged Residential Care: Partnership in action This programme funded by the Ministry of Health originated from a recognition that increasing numbers of people are dying in aged residential care (ARC) with projections showing these numbers are expected to increase dramatically by A dedicated hospice ARC team with the support of allied health, work alongside staff in the ARC facilities to provide another layer of support in their care of residents nearing the end of their life. By working in partnership with the staff, sustainable practices that reflect best palliative care practice are embedded in ARC facilities. The Education team further supports this In Reach Programme by providing opportunities for palliative care workshops on site to further build knowledge and confidence for all staff in end of life care for residents. 7 Community Engagement Building Compassionate Communities While compassionate communities are diverse and locally responsive, the fundamental underpinnings remain common. Compassionate communities involve the activation of community members to care for each other. They draw on community strengths, resources and resilience to deliver more holistic care to those experiencing death, dying, caregiving, loss and bereavement (Compassionate communities implementation guide 2018) is dedicated to working with a diverse range of communities. Building compassionate communities and social networks assists patients and families/ whānau to care for their loved ones in a variety of settings; in the hospice, in hospital, in aged care residential facilities or at home. We provide palliative care and end of life training to health professionals and community workers and are keen to engage with grassroots communities dealing with loss and grief and to demystify death and dying. Our education team with the support of our volunteer and allied health team can work with you to facilitate conversations, co design workshops / seminars to meet your needs using a range of approaches. 8 Syringe Driver Competency The competency and update workshops provide the knowledge and practical skills required to manage a subcutaneous syringe driver in the practice setting and a knowledge of medicines for end of life symptom management. Successful completion of a practical assessment and a written test is required for certification. Aged Residential Care (ARC) Syringe Driver Training: This programme has been designed for Registered Nurses but Enrolled Nurses can attend subject to their scope of practice. A work book will be sent out one week prior to the workshop. Registrations are essential. For ARC facilities the NZ Syringe driver competency will be delivered. Duration: 1.5 hrs. 9 Cancer Research Trust Lecture Series 2019 New Zealand, with the generous support of the Cancer Research Trust New Zealand offer free access to the monthly Palliative Care Lecture Series. This education opportunity is for healthcare professionals with an interest in palliative care. The lectures are delivered via teleconference and the speaker uses a power point presentation. Copies of the presentation are available to the attendees. The lectures take place on the first Thursday of every month from February to December from 7.30 to 8.30am and are free to attend. is one of the registered sites that facilitates these lectures via teleconference and health colleagues are very welcome to join us. Registration is not required and these sessions are free to attend. Just turn up on the morning and enjoy the lectures along with a coffee. Certificate of attendance is provided. 10 New Zealand Fundamentals of Palliative Care This is the New Zealand programme that provides participants with a foundational knowledge and skills in caring and supporting people with palliative needs. The programme has been developed for all staff registered and unregistered including administration and support staff working in a residential care facility or in the community. All participants need to have a commitment to self learning through completion of pre and post workshop activities. Certificates will be awarded for each session when learning activities are completed. This programme is offered over 2 or 3 days to cover the 10 learning modules. The purpose of this workshop is to advance participants knowledge and skills in pain assessment, understanding and management of complex pain issues for people with life limiting conditions. 17 Advanced Communications: Managing those difficult discussions Communication with people at the end of life or with life limiting conditions can be challenging The aim of this workshop is; To support participants to gain confidence and competence in initiating and having conversations with people who have life limiting illnesses. These conversations can be challenging as a person s illness becomes more complex and they and their family and whānau are faced with difficult decisions. Everyone involved in working with people and their families need to have confidence and competence for effective communication to provide good care.
