2 Modular Course consisting of four two day modules and five webinar-sessions Page 2 NURSES CERTIFICATE IN EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE Emergency cases can be some of the most challenging and rewarding patients to deal with in practice. The treatment of emergency patients is one of the most challenging areas for both veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses. If the correct treatment is provided and is successful it gives great professional satisfaction and also results in a good quality of life for the patient. This course provides the tools and competence for the veterinarian nurse, ensuring the optimal result and the survival of acute patients. The course takes the participants through all aspects of treatment of the acute patient all the way from reception, planning of triage, stabilisation and monitoring, to the treatment of trauma patients. The course consists of theoretical lessons and practical exercises. The two teachers on this course both work at one of the UK s biggest emergency centres and their clinical experience and extensive use of cases will provide the participants with knowledge that can directly be applied to their daily work in their own practice. Recognise the different types of shock : hypovolaemia, maldistributive, septic, cardiogenic Understand the importance of electrolytes and their role in homeostasis Understand why and how blood transfusions should be safely carried out in practice Gain knowledge of the different types of blood products available and their clinical application Understand how to calculate fluid therapy rates

Be able to identify common arrhythmias in medical emergencies. Understand the treatment of acute renal failure and the underlying causes of pre, renal and post- renal failure. Understand the pathophysiology of endocrine emergencies, including Addisons disease. Be able to identify the common poisons seen in companion animals and have knowledge of the antidotes and treatments. Gain an in-depth understanding of Parvovirus patient, and gain knowledge of the latest thoughts in their treatment. Module 4: Date: 30 sep Surgical emergency procedures Speakers: Paul Aldridge (BVSc CertSAS MRCVS) Understand how to correctly prepare and instrument the emergency patient for surgery. Learn the importance of correct asepsis when preparing patients for surgery. Understand the pathophysiology behind gastric dilatation and volvulus, the emergency and surgical treatment options. Understand what is meant by septic peritonitis, the potential causes and surgical options for dealing with these patients. Learn how to deal with the patient with a haemoabdomen, causes and when to administer blood products in these patients. Gain knowledge in how to deal with the caesarean patient, including pre-. Intra- and post-op considerations.

Recognise pain in companion animals, and gain confidence in the use of veterinary pain scoring systems. Consider the anaesthesia of emergency patients and select appropriate anaesthetic agents for the condition Perform safe anaesthetic monitoring Recognise, and react to cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies during anaesthesia. Module 6: Date: 10 feb Nursing the Critical Patient Understand the physiological changes with occur during recumbency Recognise and perform techniques to manage recumbent patients more suceessfully Gain knowledge in the nutritional requirement of trauma and critical care patients and their individual requirements Gain confidence and skills in the use of different techniques for administering enteral nutrition to patients, e.g. nasooesophageal, oesophaogostomy and gastrostomy tubes. Understand how to manage a variety of catheters and drains, correctly and aseptically, including urinary catheters, thoracic drains, tracheostomy tunes. Gain knowledge of the importance of maintaining effective infection control protocols when dealing with critical patients in order to prevent hospital acquired infections (HAIs).

Understand the technology and use of the latest advanced wound dressings. Understand how urinary trauma presents, and how we can stabilise the patient prior to surgery. Understand the prognosis for head trauma patients, carry out small animal coma scoring (SACS). Be able to carry out effective nursing techniques for dealing with head trauma patients Understand how to deal with thoracic trauma patients, and prioritise their treatment. Module 8: Date: 8 sep Practical Day Speakers: Paul Aldridge (BVSc CertSAS MRCVS ) Understand the new approach to veterinary CPR and be able to carry out effective CPR within a team (dry lab). Understand how we can monitor the patient during CPR. Present case studies, discuss cases and their treatment. Practical session: Perform correct suturing techniques relevant to emergency patients, e.e. chinese fingertrap sutures, tie over dressings (dry/wet lab) Understand, and be able to assist with, emergency procedures including tracheostomy tube placement, thoracic drain placement wet lab (cadavers). Demonstrate techniques for administering/supplementing oxygen, e.g. placement of nasal oxygen cannulas, transtracheal oxygen administration dry lab Perform a variety of vascular access-procedures, e.g. Seldinger central catheter placement, intraosseus needle placement dry lab. Perform, and understand the placement of, various feeding tubes, e.g. nasooesophageal, oesophagostomy tubes.

He gained his RCVS certificate in Surgery in 2007, and is currently senior surgeon at a hospital based practice in the North West of England, that also hosts the UK s largest emergency centre. Paul divides his time between emergency cases and surgical referral patients. His clinical interests include multiple trauma patients and the management of acute abdominal cases. He is widely involved in providing CPD for both nurses and vets, and is co-author of the forthcoming book Practical Emergency and Critical care Nursing. Louise O Dwyer (BSc(Hons) VTS(ECC)DipAVN(Medical) DipAVN(Surgical)) Louise O Dwyer has worked at PetMedics, the UKs largest emergency clinic for the past 12 years and is currently Clinical Director. Louise holds both the Medical and Surgical Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing as well as being a board certified veterinary technician specialist in Emergency and Critical Care. In 2012 Louise gained her MBA and is currently a part time PhD student at Manchester Metropolitan University looking at resistant bacteria in veterinary practice and their relevance in biofilms. Louise contributes regularly to veterinary nursing articles, sitting on the editorial board of the Veterinary Nurse journal. Louise is the author of Wound Management for the Veterinary Nurse and Technician and the forthcoming Practical Techniques in Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Nursing.
