2 CONFERENCE OVERVIEW THE A-B-'SEAS' OF TRAUMA CARE Join your peers on board Carnival Spirit for our A-B-'Seas' of Trauma Care conference, presented as you cruise to the beautiful South Pacific islands. Trauma remains the leading cause of death and disability for Australians under the age of 45 years. The majority of states and territories in Australia have mature Trauma systems and this provides health care professionals the ability to provide rapid assessment and treatment. This ensures the most appropriate patient care is delivered to improve patient outcomes. The overall goal is to decrease the incidence and severity of trauma, and to ensure equitable access to optimal trauma care to improve health outcomes for those who are injured. The main objective is to 'get the right patient to the right hospital in the right time receiving the right care'. This conference is designed for registered nurses and paramedics working in rural or high-density population areas who may be required to assess and manage patients with traumatic injuries. The conference will provide an overview of trauma and trauma systems in Australia. The presentations and interactive case studies will provide the participant with an understanding of the systematic approach involved in trauma assessment including the skills and core knowledge required to manage the severely injured patient. 3 ITINERARY AND CONFERENCE SESSIONS THE A-B-'SEAS' OF TRAUMA CARE Presented on board CARNIVAL SPIRIT 8-night cruise to the South Pacific 5-13 August, 2019 Day 1 - Monday, 5 th August 2019 Embarkation - Welcome Aboard! Guest Welcome and Conference Registration 16:00 Carnival Spirit departs Sydney 21:00 Social meet 'n' mingle for all guests and their cruising companions Day 2 - Tuesday, 6 th August :00-12:00 Conference - Morning session (3 CPD hours) An Introduction to Modern Trauma Care This session will focus on the burden of trauma in Australia and the trauma system structure that is designed to facilitate a multi-disciplinary response to provide optimal care to injured patients. We will review the foundations of trauma by exploring some of the fundamental concepts in trauma care such as the mechanism of injury, initial assessment and providing a systematic approach to managing complex trauma patients. 12:00-13:00 Lunch 13:00-15:00 Conference - Afternoon session (2 CPD hours) Managing Traumatic Shock - "What's New?" In this session we will review the principles of haemorrhagic shock and explore how its management has changed over the last decade. We will go on to explore the identification and management of traumatic shock through an interactive case study of a poly-trauma patient. The case study will follow the patient journey from initial injury, pre-hospital and emergency care through to definitive care and discharge. 4 Day 3 - Wednesday, 7 th August :00-12:00 Conference - Morning session (3 CPD hours) Considerations in the Paediatric and Geriatric Trauma Population Trauma remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality across all age groups. However, injuries in paediatric and geriatric patients can present unique challenges. This session will focus on the extremes of age and how this impacts on all areas of trauma management. We will discuss the complexities unique to this demographic and learn about special considerations in the assessment and management of traumatic injury. 12:00-13:00 Lunch 13:00-15:00 Conference - Afternoon session (2 CPD hours) Priorities in Trauma Care - Competing Interests, Getting it Right High-energy trauma patients are a unique and often challenging population and multiple injuries are common. We will present an interactive case study of a trauma patient with multiple body systems injured, treated in a major trauma centre. Pre-hospital and emergency department management and concepts such as adjuncts to the primary survey and decision making trees are also covered in the case. Day 4 - Thursday, 8 th August 2019 Noumea, New Caledonia (arrive 08:00 / depart 17:00) Noumea is the capital city of the French territory of New Caledonia and it is one of the largest ports in the South Pacific. It is situated on a peninsula in the south of New Caledonia's main island, Grand Terre, and is home to the majority of the island's European, Polynesian, Indonesian, and Vietnamese populations. The city lies on a protected deep-water harbour which serves as the chief port for New Caledonia. Day 5 - Friday, 9 th August 2019 Maré, New Caledonia (arrive 08:00 / depart 17:00) The island of Maré is a commune in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. Maré is a raised coral atoll and is 42km long and 16-33km wide. It lies northeast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia's mainland. The main village on Maré is Tadine, a peaceful little port village. Most cruise ship visitors take a day trip to nearby Yejele Beach for swimming and snorkelling. Day 6 - Saturday, 10 th August 2019 Isle of Pines, New Caledonia (arrive 08:00 / depart 17:00) The Isle of Pines is an island located in the South Pacific, in the archipelago of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France. The island lies southeast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia's main island, and southeast of the capital Noumea. It is well known for its snorkelling and scuba diving in and around the lagoon. Many different species of tropical fish and corals can be seen in the transparent water. Continued over..

5 Day 7- Sunday, 11 th August :00-12:00 Conference - Morning session (3 CPD hours) A Focus on Chest and Abdominal Trauma This session will provide an overview of chest injuries. We will look at the future direction of rib fractures and flail chest management. In the second part of this session we will review abdominal injuries and explore the shift to non-operative management of solid organ injury and interventional radiology. 12:00-13:00 Lunch 13:00-15:00 Conference - Afternoon session (2 CPD hours) Let's Talk About Pelvic Fractures Pelvic fractures represent a wide spectrum of injury from causing a little pain and inconvenience to life-threatening haemorrhage and death. In this session we will review the different types of injury patterns and pelvic fractures. We'll examine associated injures that may be possible with pelvic fractures, along with initial and definitive management strategies. Day 8 - Monday, 12 th August :00-12:00 Conference - Morning session (3 CPD hours) Bariatric Trauma and Conference Conclusion We'll finish our conference with an interesting talk on bariatric trauma. Obesity is increasing in Australia and we are faced with additional challenges and considerations in this group of trauma patients. To conclude the seminar we would like to give you the opportunity to ask any questions and share any feedback or discuss any of your own experiences in caring for trauma patients. 6 MEET THE PRESENTERS THE A-B-'SEAS' OF TRAUMA CARE Our presenters for this conference are dedicated clinicians with a passion for trauma care. Debra and Kate have vast experience in presenting trauma-related conferences for nurses and paramedics. Their extensive knowledge of trauma management spans from pre-hospital care to the hospital bedside which translates to an interesting and interactive conference for all participants. Debra McDougall Debra is the area Clinical Nurse Consultant with the John Hunter Hospital Trauma Service, a position she has held for over twelve years. Debra has a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nursing and a Master in Advanced Practice, Emergency Nursing. Prior to her trauma role, Debra worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the John Hunter Hospital emergency department. Debra has a passion for trauma education and is very active in the development of trauma education courses. She is experienced in providing trauma education to multi-disciplinary health professionals including pre-hospital care providers. Kate King Kate is a Clinical Nurse Consultant in Trauma at the John Hunter Hospital where she has held this role for the past fourteen years. Prior to this, Kate worked as a full time academic at the University of Newcastle and continues her relationship as a Conjoint Lecturer. Kate has also worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Emergency Departments in Newcastle, Sydney and London. She has a Master of Nursing in Trauma and Emergency from the University of Sydney. Kate regularly presents at national and international conferences on all things trauma. She is a published author in both trauma journals and textbooks and has a passion for sharing her knowledge of trauma. Isle of Pines, New Caledonia
