1 POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT/SERVICE: REPORTS TO: Registered Nurse MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT & HOME TREATMENT TEAM (MHAHT) MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS SERVICE SERVICE MANAGER MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS WDHB Manager Date ACCEPTED: Employee Date ROLE SUMMARY This position works principally within the department or service specified above, however all employees at Whanganui District Health Board may be required to undertake duties in other areas of the organisation which promote the efficient and effective operation of Whanganui District Health Board which reasonably fall within the general parameters of this position PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To provide quality mental health assessments, implement crisis interventions that are therapeutic, minimizing risk to service user/tangata whaiora and their family/whanau. The position will also provide home treatment to service user/tangata whaiora and their family/whanau in accordance with operational procedures. The position has rostered and rotating shifts and has an overnight on call component. The position will meet professional standards, legislative requirements and Whanganui District Health Board policy and follow the values and attitudes of Let s get real DIRECT REPORTS nil 1

4 Where the Position holder is authorised by the DAMHS for this purpose: Maintains Duly Authorised Officer (DAO) status within the WDHB for the purpose of the application of the Mental Health Act 199 (MHA) (PDRP) Health Professional is able to act as a DAO for WDHB Mental Health Service. The Registered Nurse is able to act as a ready point of contact for any aspect of the MHA 199 to provide assistance, advice or reassurance on the application of the MHA 199 in accordance with statutory guidelines Maintains registration and a duly authorised officer updating training Uses clinical knowledge and experience to determine the least restrictive outcome of interventions with service user/tangata whaiora Demonstrates the ability to apply the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nursing practice. To ensure that nursing care is conducted in accordance with the Articles contained in the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nursing practice Supports and facilitates the implementation of Let s get real across inpatient units Demonstrates accountability for directing, monitoring and evaluating nursing care that is provided by nurse, enrolled nurses, students and others. Uses knowledge and skills to support night staff with Let s get real and role models commitment by being a champion for Let s get real Supervises enrolled nurses, students and others on a day to day basis. Promotes an environment that enables service user/tangata whaiora and their family/whanau safety, independence, quality of life, and health. Reviews current service user/tangata whaiora health records all WEBPAS documentation entered by enrolled nurses, students and others. Countersigns, analyses and finalises entries Practises nursing in a manner that the service user/tangata whaiora and their Evidence that the service user/ tangata whaiora and their family/whanau are 4

5 family/whanau determine as being culturally safe. Demonstrate cultural awareness / sensitivity to service users /tangata whaiora and their family /whanau needs in particular when working with people who have an affiliation to Maori practices. involved with the recovery care planning process and that a range of helpful options are explored. Provides evidence through the individual performance reviews through submission of PDRP portfolio which supports interpersonal and therapeutic communication with service user/tangata whaiora and their family/whanau, the health care team and demonstrates inter professional communication documentation. Positive feedback from service users, community agencies and colleagues demonstrates effective functional relationships and communication. Effective conflict resolution is demonstrated and the registered nurses communication and relationships reflects positively on the mental health service. Inter professional healthcare and quality improvement that is evidenced through the individual performance reviews and portfolio submission for PDRP, which demonstrates an ability to evaluate the effectiveness of care and promote a nursing perspective within the interprofessional activities of the 5

7 IDEAL PERSON PROFILE QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Essential New Zealand Registered Nurse Extensive experience in mental health clinical setting with a minimum of 3 years acute/community mental health nursing. Current Annual Practicing Certificate Post Graduate qualifications relevant to the position Current driver s license Proven computer literacy Possess sound knowledge on mental illnesses, crisis, talking therapy, psychiatric medications and the management of Qualified Duly Authorized Officer or commitment to undertake DAO training within 3 months Police clearance in terms of Vulnerable Children s Act PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Under the Human Rights Act 1993 discrimination based on disability is unlawful. Whanganui District Health Board will make all reasonable efforts to provide a safe and healthy work place for all, including persons with disability. Every effort has been made to outline requirements clearly. If a potential applicant has uncertainties about their ability to fulfill these physical requirements, enquiry should be made whether it would be possible to accommodate a particular issue by obtaining advice from Occupational Health Unit/Infection control team. Must be able to function in rapidly changing and demanding conditions when required. Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate clearly with patients and co-workers, monitor patient status and equipment, recognize impending emergencies relating to patients and equipment and hear emergency alarm. Ability to wear face masks and rubber gloves for protection against infectious disease. Absence of a health condition which could increase appointee's susceptibility if exposed to infections more frequently than usual Skin condition should allow frequent contact with water, soap/disinfectant soap, chemicals and latex rubber. Skin should not be fissured, scaly, cracked on hands, forearms, face or neck. The appointee must not have infection or colonization with MRSA. The appointee must not have a health condition that will put others at risk. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a variety of specialized equipment used within wards/departments at Wanganui Hospital as required, including syringes and intravenous pumps together with safe administration of drugs and use of clerical items including personal computers. A high degree of physical capacity is required as the work is physically demanding, involving standing, walking, sitting, stretching, twisting bending and lifting/moving weights up to and above 15 kilograms frequently. (Stature extremes may increase hazard of shared activities). A high degree of mental concentration is required. Ability to move about and undertake necessary duties (sometimes in restricted spaces) in wards / departments / community settings within Whanganui District Health Board. Visual ability sufficient to read, write/record, operate equipment, safely administer medications, monitor equipment and patient status enabling accurate performance of essential job duties 7

8 Successful interviewees will need to know their "Hepatitis B" status and have available recent documented MRSA clearance.
