To participate in the management and provision of a high quality patient focused audiology service which is efficient, cost effective and accessible. 3 My role responsibility To provide lead clinical expertise, advice, and patient services to ensure a high quality patient focused audiology service which achieves optimal outcomes for our patients, meets professional standards and complies with Whanganui District Health Board policies and practices. A set of performance objectives will be agreed annually between your manager and yourself reflecting applicable strategic and operational ambitions. Key Performance Indicators Key Accountabilities (Key areas of your focus) Leads and supervises audiology clinical activities Provides audiology services to people within Whanganui DHB area Participates in the development and provision of aural habilitation and rehabilitation programmes as appropriate for the needs of the patient Tasks (How you achieve) Provides supervision and oversight of clinical and day-to-day operational activities, including management and allocation of clinical audiology tasks. Ensures audiology practices for WDHB are safe, effective, and consistent with professional standards. Provides advice coaching and guidance for other audiologists, including supporting their professional development as appropriate. Ensures service meets New Zealand Audiological Society (NZAS), National Screening Unit (NSU), Whanganui DHB standards, and best practice guidelines Ensures documentation is completed as per NZAS, NSU and Whanganui DHB standards Informs referral sources of outcome Provides referrals to other professionals when appropriate Participates in the Universal New Born Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP) as required. Participates in evaluation of practice through supervision/peer review. Informs patients/families of appropriate management options, be it hearing aids, assistance listening devices, or applicable listening skills Selects and fits appropriate hearing aids, and educates and supports patients/families in their use Manages, where appropriate, costs/ quotations and payment for hearing aids within the parameters of organisational policies Performance Indicators (How you will be measured) Efficient and effective management and delivery of clinical workloads. Clinical standards and audit requirements are met. Creation and achievement of development plans for audiologists that satisfy employee and clinical requirements. All relevant legislative and professional standards are consistently met Successful passing of audits and peer reviews Positive referrer feedback Patients/families report being well informed about their clinical condition, its implications, and the range of options for management Patient feedback indicates they feel well supported and informed in their decision making. 4 Maintains quality and patient safety standards Maintains professional standards Informs patients of other agencies and options available to provide additional assistance and support Maintains integration between audiological and educational support for children and their families Contributes to and provides staff and student education Treats all patients/service users with respect, dignity and compassion Complies with DHB policies and procedures to ensure delivery of good quality care Promptly reports risks to quality and safety to their line manager Identifies areas for improvement in their day to day work and to act upon these when appropriate and/or bring these to the attention of their line manager Participates in on-going quality improvement activities within their team, service, site or department. Raises concerns with their line manager, if there are quality or patient / service safety issues in their area Ensures procedures are conducted in the client / patient s chosen communication mode and language (including access to interpreters where required) Provides client / patient and or family / carer with counselling about each procedure Ensures procedures address client / patient and family / carer preferences, goals and special needs Ensures materials and approaches used and products dispensed are appropriate to the client s / patient s chronological and development age, medical status, physical and sensory abilities, education, vocation, cognitive status and cultural / ethnic, social and linguistic background Maintains equipment according to manufacturer s specifications and recommendations. Audiological instruments and also the rooms used for sound field testing are properly Consistently demonstrates responsibility for the provision of quality services Demonstrates and role models that quality improvement is a fundamental duty of all staff All relevant legislative and professional standards are consistently met Successful passing of audits and peer reviews Practices comply with New Zealand Audiology Society Incorporated standards Audiologist Position Description Review date xx/xx/xxxx 4 P a g e
5 Manages a patient/whānaucentred care service. Manages the requirements for audiology assessments including new born screening as set out by the National Screening Unit (NSU) calibrated at recommended intervals and calibration records are maintained Ensures all procedures are safe for the patient / client and clinician and adhere to universal health precautions (e.g. prevention of bodily injury and transmission of infectious disease) Decontaminates, cleans, disinfects and sterilises multiple use equipment before reuse Monitors procedure to ensure all clinical and ancillary staff follow these procedures Prepares, signs and maintains documentation within appropriate timeframes When appropriate and with written consent, reports are distributed with all necessary identifying information. Ensures that (except for screening) documentation addresses the type and degree of hearing loss and associated conditions, identification information, relevant history, and results of previous screening, assessment and rehabilitation if available Discusses results of assessment and proposed management with the client and reports to the referral source when the referrer is another professional. They may also be reported to the clients family or carer as appropriate Provides culturally competent care. Understands principles of ethical practice Understands the DHB s focus on increasing equity in its services. Interviews the client and family or significant other to obtain an appropriate in depth case history relevant to audiological and client needs Appraises information from client files to facilitate planning for audiological assessments Management, supervision and provision of advice on neonatal Consistent compliance with all facility specific infection control policies and procedures and according to manufacturer s instructions. Documentation reflects the nature of the professional service. Completed Hapai Te Hoe training. Positive relationship with Haumoana service in Te Hau Ranga Ora. 6 Health and Safety in Employment screening programmes, and coordination with long-term audio logical services for paediatrics with hearing impairment and their families. Development and oversight of other hearing screening programmes which aim at the early detection of hearing and related problems to achieve the best possible outcome for those participating in the programmes Comply with all safe work procedures, policies and instructions. Report all incidents hazards and injuries to supervisors in a timely manner. Actively participate in the ongoing development of safe workplace practices in Whanganui District Health Board. Complied with all WDHB Health and Safety requirements. My Capability & Personal Qualities To be effective and succeed in this role it is expected that you will have the following proven capabilities: an appropriate tertiary qualification in Audiology as recognised by NZAS no less than three years work experience post completion of a recognized qualification in Audiometry Holds current NZAS Clinical Competency Certification as an Audiologists or is undertaking these. 8 Physical Attributes We will make all reasonable efforts to provide a safe and healthy work place for all, including persons with disability. Must be able to function in rapidly changing and demanding conditions when required. Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate clearly with patients and co-workers, monitor patient status and equipment, recognise impending emergencies relating to patients and equipment and hear emergency alarm. Ability to wear face masks and rubber gloves for protection against infectious disease. Absence of a health condition which could increase appointee's susceptibility if exposed to infections more frequently than usual Skin condition should allow frequent contact with water, soap/disinfectant soap, chemicals and latex rubber. Skin should not be fissured, scaly, cracked on hands, forearms, face or neck. The appointee must not have infection or colonisation with MRSA. The appointee must not have a health condition that will put others at risk. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a variety of specialised equipment used within wards/departments at Wanganui Hospital as required and use of clerical items including personal computers. A high degree of physical capacity is required as the work is physically demanding, involving standing, walking, sitting, stretching, twisting bending and lifting/moving weights up to and above 15 kilogrames frequently. (Stature extremes may increase hazard of shared activities). A high degree of mental concentration is required. Ability to move about and undertake necessary duties (sometimes in restricted spaces) in wards / departments / community settings within Whanganui District Health Board.
