WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS The meeting was called to order at 10:03 a.m. with Dean, Joanne MacLean as Chair. KIN student Mia Harries was introduced as a new student representative for the Kinesiology department. 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND MINUTES 2.1 Adoption of Agenda November 20, 2015 Health Sciences Faculty Council 1

2 THAT the agenda be approved as circulated. 2.2 Adoption of Minutes of September 21, 2015 Karen Davidson/Joanna Sheppard THAT the minutes of the meeting of the September 21, 2015 Health Sciences Faculty Council meeting be approved as circulated. CURRICULUM COMMITTEE 3.1 Health Care Assistant curriculum Course outlines Nancy Goad The provincial curriculum has been revised and there are changes to course descriptions and learning outcomes in some HCA courses. Changes have been made in the following courses to reflect the changes in the provincial curriculum: HCA change in learning outcome 1 HCA change to the course description, learning outcomes 1 and 3 HCA change in credits (to better align it with other HCA clinical courses), change in name (more congruent with other Health Studies programming), change in course description HCA change in name (more congruent with other Health Studies programming), change in course description, added prerequisite HCA change in credits (to better align it with other HCA clinical courses), change in name (more congruent with other Health Studies programming), change in course description Resources were updated and evaluation reviewed THAT the Health Sciences Faculty Council approve the proposed course outlines for HCA 111; HCA 113; HCA 130; HCA 131; HCA 132 Joanna Sheppard/Shelley Canning 3.2 Bachelor of Science Nursing Curriculum Course Outlines Nancy Goad The BSN Task Force continues to revitalize the BSN curriculum and asks for approval of changes made to the following year 3 course outlines: NURS 300 (replaces our current HSC 310) NURS 301 NURS 303 NURS 304 NURS 305 (replaces our current NURS 307) NURS 306 November 20, 2015 Health Sciences Faculty Council 2

3 THAT the Health Sciences Faculty Council approve the proposed changes to NURS 300. Nancy Goad/Shelley Canning THAT the Health Sciences Faculty Council approve the proposed changes to NURS 301. Nancy Goad/Amber Johnston THAT the Health Sciences Faculty Council approve the proposed changes to NURS 303. Kate McCulloch/Karen Davidson 3.3 KIN Entrance Requirements Amber Johnston These program changes remove some of the limitations and barriers for students that have been preventing their acceptance into the KIN program. All of these changes make the program easier to apply into. The changes support UFV ILO s with respect to having both high quality and successful student as well as opening the program up to international applicants. FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES STANDING COMMITTEES 4.1 Nominations and Elections Committee Janine Roberts Janine reported that 2 Kinesiology students Mia Harries and Jessica Walesch - will alternate attendance at meetings. 2 students from the Nursing program will be found for a similar arrangement. Two support staff positions are vacant. As well, there is a vacancy for one sessional faculty member. Alison Pritchard Orr has agreed to stay on as Vice Chair of Faculty Council. 4 THAT the Health Sciences Faculty Council receive the Nominations and Elections Committee reports and recommendations. Janine Roberts/Katie Baird 4.2 Interdisciplinary Committee Shelley Canning Shelley reminded everyone of the Speaker s Series presentation on Monday, November 30 th from Sam Waddington will be speaking about Back to the Backcountry the connection between health & wellness and being out in the wilderness. 4.3 Internationalization Committee Alison Pritchard Orr A written report was circulated with the agenda package. Jag Deol from International Education has done presentations for students and faculty to talk about opportunities that currently exist for international exchanges. A suggestion was made to invite someone from International Education to attend a future Faculty Council meeting to make a short presentation and have Q&A about activities and initiatives of UFV s International Education department. Kara Bertram and Mike Armstrong will be attending an Internationalization Committee meeting to look at ways to enhance international education information on the FHS website. The 11 th year of the Antigua Study Tour is fully subscribed with 22 students. 5. REPORTS 5.1 Written reports from September and November Senate meetings were circulated with the agenda package. Alastair Hodges/Shelley Canning 5.1b Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee report Dave Harper reported that TLAC is planning a PD day for all UFV with a theme of life long learning and engaging the community. A request to have sessions on both main campuses was made. 5.2 Report from the Dean Joanne MacLean The Dean asked faculty to keep in touch with Mike Armstrong. If there is anything interesting happening - classrooms, labs, sim labs, guest speakers let him know. We need photos, videos, stories to keep our web page interesting and dynamic. We want to promote what our students are doing, how engaged they are in the learning process, how we connect with our communities. There were three open forums on the SEM goals of Health and Wellness programming. Joanne will be creating a steering committee to move some of the ideas/projects forward. Budget is a zero growth budget no cuts, no new funds. Vision 2025 the Provost is seeking engagement in identifying the top goals for UFV to ensure this institution is well placed and progressing in the next 10 years. Convocation 2016 will be a week earlier than previous years - June 2 & 3, From the last Faculty Council meeting Maggie Shamro has contacted the local Rotary club to see if they would be willing to let UFV adopt a section of the trail closer to the CEP campus. 5 Christmas Door decorating contest Judging will be done Friday December 4 th. 6. FACULTY FORUM DISCUSSION: Topic How adequately are we addressing student/faculty issues with mental health in the Faculty of Health Sciences? Following Ginny Dennehy s visit to our Faculty and her presentation as part of the President s Speakers Series, a student has engaged in the application process to start a Jack chapter at UFV. Mental health screening tools, pet therapy sessions, and the PASS program are already in place at UFV. There were questions and discussion about how faculty are supported in dealing with students who are experiencing anxiety. Concern was expressed about what to do/how to handle students who express feelings of anxiety or depression. Would it be helpful to map assignments and exams across departmental courses to identify and shift schedules so students are not overwhelmed? Would it be possible to develop and offer a required health and wellness course for all Health Sciences students? They don t know as much as we/they think they do. Our greatest strength is that we are educators. There was a recent interview with Rick Cluff on CBC radio about a Mental Health First Aid course out of Australia. Is this something that could be offered/available here? There was discussion about a pilot project in the Kinesiology program KIN Pals, a student to student mentoring initiative. The Nursing programs used to have a buddy system that was similar. It might be good to revamp and re-launch that program. Students in the Patho course studying stress and adaptation are appreciative of knowing why their bodies are reacting the way they are. For first year students, it might be helpful to talk with them earlier and more extensively about the difference between high school and post-secondary education. It would be good to be more up front about our expectations. Some of our students have undisclosed physical health issues that can add to their stress and contribute to mental health issues. The idea of a common course on Health & Wellness was brought forward at the Health & Wellness forums. There will be more work done to develop this idea. How can we find a way to give these ideas legs? What structure(s) need to be put in place to support the growth of these initiatives? 7.
