3 All Live Workshops are Limited to 45! 2011 Arkansas Hospital Association Mid-Management Healthcare Leadership Series Preparing YOU to Make an Impact in Your Hospital Making the transition to supervisor/manager/leader is a significant step for nearly everyone who takes it. Research shows that managers are the primary factor determining an employee s desire to work for the hospital. That underscores the need to develop supervisors with the skills and competencies necessary to create an environment of mutual trust, respect and open communications with the people they direct. In today s healthcare environment, accepting a leadership role is far more challenging and complex than ever before. First, there is the challenge of simply getting oriented to what it means to be a manager/ leader. This is closely followed by the realization that YOU carry the responsibility for meeting the demands of your organization for high quality and productivity as well as compliance and financial outcomes. You also quickly learn that these accountabilities must be balanced with an excellent grasp of human relation skills in working closely and collaborating with others. In its sixth year, the Arkansas Hospital Association s Mid-Management Healthcare Leadership Series continues to add focus to critical leadership skills and competencies with new workshop topics. The series will offer six one-day workshops and three Webinars.

4 The AHA Mid-Management Healthcare Leadership Series is more than classroom learning. Each of the leadership courses include networking opportunities with hospital staff from other facilities making the move to management and the opportunity to learn with and from faculty with extensive experience in the area of leadership development. Who Should Attend? These workshops are designed for individuals new to hospital supervisory or mid-level management positions. The programs also help groom employees who may eventually be moving into middle-management positions. In addition, experienced managers seeking a refresher course should find the curriculum valuable. Structure The Leadership Series consists of six live programs, all offered independently of each other, and three Webinars. Participants may attend one or any number of programs in the Series. AHA Leadership Certificate Qualifications To receive an AHA Mid-Management certificate, individuals must attend and complete at least five of the six live programs in the series and one of the three Webinars. for Live Programs On-site Registration for all programs will begin at 9:00 a.m. with refreshments. Programs will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. There will be two 15 minute breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with lunch being provided at noon. Continuing Education All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for all meetings. The Arkansas Hospital Association is authorized to award preapproved Category II continuing education credit for each program toward advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Nursing contact hours will be awarded for each program for nurses attending the entire event and signing-in at registration. Actual CNE hours are listed on each individual program agenda. 7 Successfully Managing Multiple Projects & Priorities Faculty: Harry Chambers August 25, 2011 Making the Business Case for Quality Improvement Faculty: William J. Ward September 16, 2011 How to Achieve Top Gun Success for Hospitals Faculty: Ed Rush October 5, 2011 Held in conjunction with the AHA Annual Meeting Stepping into a new position can be overwhelming...especially when it is a management position. You already have so much to do and now new projects are being added to your responsibilities. With more demands on your time, how do you keep up with today s enormous workload? This program will help attendees: Plan effectively Maintain your focus: the skills of prioritization Implement the five critical steps for successful project performance Deal with interruptions and disruptions Identify the tools of effective organization Communicate your current workload and avoid overload Identify the critical elements of effective delegation Monitor progress and results without micromanaging Overcome procrastination It s almost intuitive to think that improvements in quality can result in improved financial performance every other industry has embraced this principle for many years. In healthcare, however, the need to make the business case for any quality initiative still exists. Regrettably, those involved in such initiatives are often unable to articulate the positive financial performance outcomes that accrue to such quality improvements. This program will help clinicians and others involved in quality improvement initiatives understand: How to make the connection between quality improvement and financial outcomes The four principal effects of quality improvement Cost efficiency Cost reduction Revenue enhancement Throughput improvement The distinction between important financial concepts Cost efficiency vs. cost reduction Cost vs. Charges Direct cost vs. fully loaded cost Average vs. marginal revenue, cost, and profit Identifiable vs. achievable results How to make the business case In this fast-paced, energetic presentation, attendees will learn how anyone can get more done in less time, and with less waste. With principles learned in his 13-year Marine Corps career, Ed will demonstrate the three keys to speed and success in the hospital industry. But you do not need to be a fighter pilot to tap into Ed s resources for personal and corporate productivity. In fact, Ed will show you how he went from failing Kindergarten to flying $40 million dollar supersonic fighters in combat. The principles come from in the trenches experience and is tailored to the hospital industry. At the completion of this program, attendees will have the ability to: Demonstrate the four principles for getting more done in less time with less waste, thereby increasing productivity and job satisfaction Show the secrets to seamless, effective communication this principle alone will dramatically increase your hospital team s communication skills Discuss the three keys to success and how to implement them to experience more speed and fulfillment into their work
