The Art of Paediatric Care
Welcome The Harley Street Clinic Children s Hospital is one of the largest, most vibrant and innovative specialist centres for paediatric medicine in Europe. Our 21st Century approach to medical science is underpinned by our dedication to supporting both the physical and emotional wellbeing of young patients and their families, helping their experience of hospital to be as positive and stress-free as possible. Part of The Harley Street Clinic, a highly respected private hospital in central London, The Children s Hospital was formed in 2013 after an extensive two-year multi-million pound investment and refurbishment programme. It brings together a multidisciplinary team of world class paediatric consultants in cancer, cardiac care, neurosciences and specialist paediatric surgery and medicine with access to advanced diagnostic services. 3
About our care Our talented paediatric consultants are among the most respected in the world, helping children with some of the most complex medical problems. Patients travel to The Children s Hospital from many countries to receive the very best treatment for conditions including cancer, heart problems (cardiology), neurological and spinal conditions. As well as being equipped with the most advanced diagnostic equipment, the hospital also has Europe s largest private paediatric intensive care unit. All our nursing staff have specialist training in working with children and will be there from the moment you arrive to explain everything and answer your questions. Supporting you and your family Choosing The Children s Hospital means more than having access to world-class facilities. Each member of your child s medical team has specialist training in working with children and their families and will be there to support you every step of the way. When your child stays overnight, we try to create a home from home environment where they understand what is happening, feel comfortable in their surroundings and know that we are here to help and support them. Working together We operate under a model of family centred care, which includes parents and siblings as well as the care of the patient at every step. This means that when your child comes to hospital you won t be handing them over to us. We like to work with parents and guardians, making joint decisions as part of a wider team of supportive professionals. A multidisciplinary approach Although your child will be placed in the care of one particular consultant, at The Children s Hospital we use a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. This means that staff with different skills work together and meet regularly to discuss your child s condition and treatment to ensure that they have the very best care. 5
Cancer Every year in the UK around 1,500 children aged 0-14 are diagnosed with cancer; about one-third of these are diagnosed with leukaemia. Although cancers in children are rare, the symptoms can be difficult to spot and are often confused with other less serious conditions. 7
Cancer Our multidisciplinary team of consultant surgeons, oncologists, haematologists and paediatric intensive care specialists provide a comprehensive diagnostic service for cancers in babies and children aged up to 18. The service is led by a number of specialist oncologists and haematologists. When a diagnosis of cancer is confirmed, decisions about your child s treatment plan, which may involve surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, are discussed by the multidisciplinary team which includes, paediatric surgical oncologists, specialist nurses, radiotherapists and pharmacists. These specialists, whose NHS practices are at leading centres in London such as UCLH, The Royal Marsden and King s College Hospital, treat a range of childhood cancers. Chemotherapy The Children s Hospital has a dedicated chemotherapy day unit for children with cancer. Staffed by specially trained paediatric nurses and a team of associated child health professionals, patients visiting the unit have their treatment in a relaxed, supportive and child-friendly atmosphere. Haemato-oncology The haemato-oncology department diagnoses and treats children and young adults with cancer who may require stem cell or bone marrow transplantation as part of their treatment. Our brand new, purpose built department has a dedicated suite of rooms for children receiving treatment for their conditions. Radiotherapy The Children s Hospital is equipped with the very latest radiotherapy equipment including Linear Accelerators, which allow higher doses of radiation to treat tumours with sub-millimetre accuracy. We also have access to the CyberKnife, a painless treatment that delivers high doses of targeted radiation to treat conditions that can t normally be treated. Surgery Surgeons specialising in cancer are attracted to The Children s Hospital from leading London NHS hospitals, including Great Ormond Street and The Royal Brompton. Your child usually will be able to see a leading expert with particular experience of the type of cancer they have. We have 18 individual patient rooms, with accommodation for a parent to stay with their child overnight. 9
Cardiac care The Children s Hospital is the only independent hospital in the UK specialising in paediatric congenital cardiac (heart) treatments for conditions that are present from birth and we are committed to achieving the best possible results for your child. The excellent work of our team in this field is widely recognised and our paediatric cardiologists include some of the world s leading consultants who are experts in congenital heart defects in babies, infants and children. The hospital is particularly proud of its association with the international Chain of Hope charity, which brings children to this country to receive treatment for life-threatening heart diseases. Congenital heart disease Congenital heart disease is usually, but not always, discovered in early childhood. It is a general name for a number of conditions that are already present at birth. It is one of the commonest birth defects, with up to nine in every 1,000 babies affected in the UK. Our paediatric cardiac service has a dedicated unit for the care of babies and children with heart disease, fully supported by advanced diagnostics, catheter and electrophysiology laboratories, operating theatres and a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Heart surgery The hospital attracts surgeons with many different specialist skills and experience of paediatric congenital complex heart surgery. Paediatric cardiac surgeons and cardiologists are led by Professor Marc de Leval, Medical Director at the International Congenital Cardiac Centre, and are attracted to The Children s Hospital from leading London NHS hospitals, including Great Ormond Street and The Royal Brompton. With so many surgeons choosing to work at The Children s Hospital, your child will be able to see a leading expert with particular experience of the type of condition they have. We have 18 individual patient rooms with accommodation for a parent to stay with their child overnight. Our aim is to create an environment where children and their families feel happy and relaxed, and where parents can be confident that their child is receiving the very best medical care and attention. After surgery, and initial transfer to the PICU, patients are moved to the dedicated paediatric ward, where they are cared for by registered children s nurses, supported by a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, psychologists, play specialists and, if necessary, interpreters. 11
Neuroscience At The Children s Hospital we treat a wide range of conditions affecting the brain and Central Nervous System. Using the latest techniques, the team of three consultants who are world-leading experts in their specialities treat a wide range of conditions using minimally invasive techniques. Staff in this department work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes paediatric neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, nurses, psychiatrists and therapists who specialise in children s neurological conditions. The neurological team collaborates with other experts, including craniofacial and ENT specialists, to provide comprehensive care to children with any condition that affects the brain, spine or nervous system. Neurosurgery Surgeons specialising in neurosciences are attracted to The Children s Hospital from leading London hospitals including Great Ormond Street and King s College Hospital. Our aim is to create an environment where children and their families feel happy and relaxed, and where parents can be confident that their child is receiving the very best medical care and attention. After surgery, and initial transfer to the paediatric intensive care unit, patients are moved to the dedicated paediatric ward, where they are cared for by registered children s nurses, supported by a team of physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, psychologists, play specialists and if needed, interpreters. We have 18 individual patient rooms, with accommodation for one parent to stay with their child overnight. 13
Specialist surgery General and Complex surgery is offered by our multidisciplinary team of consultants and other medical professionals We have a team of world class consultant paediatric specialist surgeons treating both complex and general surgery for children of all ages. Paediatric surgeons are attracted to The Children s Hospital from leading London NHS hospitals, including Great Ormond Street, Kings College Hospital, The Royal Brompton and Chelsea & Westminster. Surgery in children is different to those in adults. In very small babies the surgery can be complex and requires extensive specialist paediatric training. Our ward has 18 individual rooms where we look after children aged from a few days old until their 18th birthday. Most of our patients will have planned or emergency admissions under the care of a variety of consultant teams. Specialist surgery includes: - All types of Hernia repair - Ear, nose and throat surgery - Thoracic - Genital including circumcision - Head and Neck - Chest Wall Deformities - Maxillofacial (jaw and dental surgery) - Orthopaedics - Nerve surgery 15
General Paediatrics Whether your child is suddenly unwell or requires a routine appointment, our consultants are here to help. We have a team of world class consultant general paediatricians providing two levels of care: an outpatient service for children who require general paediatric consultations and assessment; and management of acutely unwell children within the hospital. Our newly opened dedicated outpatient suite at 84 Harley Street offers parents and children fast access to consultants, assessments and minor treatments. Whether your child is suddenly unwell or requires a routine appointment, our consultants are here to help, offering ongoing management and ensuring continuity of care. The Children s Hospital has direct access to the latest diagnostic technology including MRI and CT. The general paediatricians diagnose and treat conditions that don t require surgery such as: - Headaches - Normal baby checks - Routine and optional immunisation - Feeding difficulties in babies, toddlers and children - Sudden high fever caused by illness - Chronic (long term) illnesses - Eczema and other dermatological conditions - Asthma and other respiratory ailments - General allergies - Constipation - Reflux - Rheumatology 17
Facilities The Children s Hospital is a fully equipped specialist centre in the heart of London, with a family friendly atmosphere that meets the particular needs of young patients. A recent multi-million pound investment in specialist state-of-the-art children s facilities, backed up by significant on-going funding, will ensure that the hospital continues to stay at the forefront of ground-breaking surgical techniques and technology in the UK. Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) With its 40 year history of clinical excellence, the newly refurbished PICU is the largest private unit of its kind in Europe, bringing together the expertise of world class consultants and dedicated specialist children s nurses with instant access to the latest ground breaking technology for critical care. The unit specialises in cardiac (heart problems), cancer, and neurosciences (conditions of the brain and central nervous system) and spinal conditions. It has close, long-established links with other world renowned PICUs in London and around the world. Nursing staff provide specialist care for patients with some of the most complex conditions. They are supported by a dedicated team of educators who ensure their skills are monitored and continuously developed. Recent multi-million pound investment has enabled us to completely refurbish the PICU, providing modern, state-of-the-art facilities with brand new equipment and treatment rooms. The 13-bed unit, including five isolation rooms, provides specialist one-to-one care for each child. In addition, a five-bed high dependency step-down area enables children to be transferred from intensive care when they are ready, while ensuring that the highest levels of monitoring and specialist care are maintained at all times. 19
Facilities The Children s Ward The Children s Hospital has an 18-bed ward for children with oncology, cardiology, neurosurgical, spinal and thoracic conditions who need medical and surgical treatment. The ward also has its own playroom and outside play area. Surgical Day Care More and more treatments are able to be performed as a day case procedure, allowing children to return home as quickly as possible. A new five-bed surgical day care unit opened at The Children s Hospital in April This unit is able to treat children from birth to 18 years of age for a range of conditions including hernias, ear, nose and throat, dental, and other general medical and surgical procedures. Operating theatres Operating theatres supporting The Children s Hospital are some of the best equipped available anywhere in the UK, with special ventilation systems that ensure the risk of infection is significantly reduced during surgery. The theatres are open seven days a week, with an out-of-hours service for emergencies. Chemotherapy Day Unit The Children s Hospital offers a dedicated chemotherapy day unit. Staffed by specialist chemotherapy trained nurses who administer treatment in a friendly and relaxed environment. Equipped with four chemotherapy chairs, this unit supports our inpatient facility and also patients who have day case chemotherapy, anti-cancer treatments, and blood transfusions. Haemato-oncology unit Our purpose built unit has a dedicated suite of rooms for children with haemato-oncological conditions including bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. We currently carry out autologous transplants (taken from the child), supported by the use of high dose chemotherapy. Outpatients Our state-of-the-art bespoke children s outpatient department is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. Our team of over 60 paediatric consultants, supported by paediatric nurses, see children with a wide range of conditions, and offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic services and treatments. Advanced Diagnostics The Children s Hospital has open access to The Harley Street Clinic s extensive diagnostic facilities on campus. Equipment includes: MRI: MRI scans can be done on children at either 81 Harley Street or The Diagnostic Centre. It is used for a number of diagnoses including brain tumours. CT: CT scanning is undertaken at both 81 Harley Street and The Diagnostic Centre. CT scanning is used to diagnose cancers and also is good for looking at bones. Digital X-Ray: this type of x-ray imaging uses the latest equipment to record images digitally rather than using traditional photographic methods. Ultrasound: an ultrasound scan uses high frequency sound waves that create images of the inside of the body. Bone Densitometry: is available at The Diagnostic Centre and can be used to evaluate rickets. OPG: stands for orthopantomogram and is a machine for diagnosing dental and problems in the jaw. 21
